Chapter 213

“Tuff, he’s fallen for someone else, hasn’t he?” Amelia’s voice trembled as she clutched her chest with her left hand.

Her heart felt like it was being stabbed over and over, the pain so sharp it made her want to cry.

So this was why Landon had disappeared without a trace.

Maisie and Edith supported Amelia from either side, afraid she might collapse under the weight of it all.

“Amelia, please don’t be like this…” Edith said softly, her voice full of worry.

“There must be some misunderstanding,” Maisie said, unusually firm.

Edith looked anxious, while Maisie remained resolute.

Tuff, listening on the other end of the phone, felt his heart ache. He steadied himself and tried to sound casual. “Amelia, normally we can’t tell family members about undercover missions. But I’m worried you might get too upset and harm the baby, so I’ll come clean. The Montgomery family is the second-in-command of the Kington Gang. Landon was sent in as an undercover agent.”

“Undercover?” Amelia repeated, stunned.

She stared at the proposal video playing on loop in front of her, still unable to believe it. “So your job even involves… seducing people?”

“It’s a special situation. There was no other way. The Kington Gang is just too hard to deal with. We sent Landon in undercover, planning to coordinate an attack from both inside and out to wipe them out in one go,” Tuff explained, sounding serious.

Amelia let out a sigh of relief, but there was still a knot of unease in her heart.

It felt like there was a rock lodged in her chest, every breath scraping against it. “Is he really going to be a real couple with that woman?” she asked.

“Of course not,” Tuff chuckled. “Amelia, you know what kind of man Landon is—better than anyone.”

Amelia went quiet.

Yeah… how could Landon ever leave her and their baby? she thought.

Once her mind finally cleared, the pain in her chest eased. When she looked at the proposal video playing on the big screen again, it didn’t hurt as much, and some color slowly returned to her face.

Maisie and Edith both let out quiet sighs of relief.

They couldn’t hear what Tuff was saying on the phone and were really curious how he had explained things.

“Tuff, can you help him come back sooner?” Amelia asked softly.

“Alright,” Tuff agreed, though he was forcing himself. “Don’t worry, Amelia. I’ll talk to my superiors and try to finish things up as soon as possible.”

“Thank you…” she whispered.

Amelia put down her phone and let out a soft sigh. She turned to Edith and Maisie. “It’s okay now.”

“Landon…” Amelia murmured to herself.

“I trust him,” Amelia said, forcing a smile. She raised her hand and waved at the big screen.

Landon was undercover, but someone had deliberately shown her the video of his proposal to Monica. Someone was obviously trying to test Landon.

Amelia told herself that she couldn’t fall for it.

If she did, she might drag Landon down with her and get him killed.

With that thought, Amelia suddenly yelled at the big screen, “Landon, I don’t want you anymore. Go marry whoever you want! I don’t need your…”

Maisie and Edith were both stunned, their faces full of shock.

Weren’t things supposed to be fine now? they both wondered.

After yelling, Amelia walked straight out of the mall.

Maisie and Edith didn’t dare say a word, carefully trailing after her.

It wasn’t until they were in the car heading home that Maisie finally asked in a low voice, “Are you… really okay?”

“I’m fine, really,” Amelia said with a smile.

Since Landon was undercover, she couldn’t tell them the truth.

Seeing how worried Maisie was, Amelia leaned over and gave her a hug. “You’re really starting to act like my big sis.”

Maisie was lost for words.

What does that even mean? Maisie thought, completely baffled.

“I still have my brother, and my sister… so it’s all good now,” Amelia said.

Maisie felt a whirlwind of emotions.

She couldn’t help but wonder if Amelia had just snapped from all the stress.

Anyone else would never be able to stay this calm if they suddenly found out their husband was cheating.

Especially since she was pregnant. Landon left her without a word, and there wasn’t even the slightest sign he might be unfaithful.

How could he just suddenly not want her anymore and go marry another woman?

“I still have my baby,” Amelia said softly, lowering her gaze and gently caressing her baby bump.

“Amelia…” Edith’s voice trembled, on the verge of tears.

If even Landon and Amelia ended up torn apart by an affair, was there really such a thing as true love left in this world?

“Really, I’m okay. I believe everything will get better,” Amelia said, forcing a reassuring smile.

Feeling guilty that she couldn’t tell them the truth, Amelia could only hold their hands tightly.

Finally, Maisie said, “That’s right! Men are crap! Family is forever.”

“I want some caramel macchiato and cake. Maisie, can you order delivery for me?” Amelia said.

“Sure,” replied Maisie.

Maisie immediately pulled out her phone to place the order.

Anything you could buy with money was no big deal. As long as Amelia didn’t go doing something crazy for a man, that was all that mattered.

When they got home, Daniel was already there.

His expression was especially grim—he must have already heard about Landon divorcing his wife and planning to remarry.

Edith, still upset, quickly said, “Amelia’s already come to terms with it. From now on, she has her baby and all of us.”

“Yeah,” Amelia said with a smile. “Daniel, you don’t have to comfort me. I’m really okay.”

Daniel took a deep breath and patted her on the shoulder. “As long as you can let it go, that’s what matters.”

Tuff had already talked to him about coordinating their stories, and Daniel had given him an earful.

But he had to admit, Tuff’s lie was the best way to handle things for now.

“Daniel, don’t worry,” Amelia said. “I’m going to stay here from now on.”

“Alright!” Daniel nodded firmly.

Since Landon was “undercover” and Amelia had already shouted her feelings at the big screen, it was better for her not to go back to Norava to rest during her pregnancy.

Daniel still had to figure out what to say to reassure Gloria.

Man, this is such a headache, Daniel thought.

Landon, seriously, what on earth are you up to? he wondered.

Not long after they got home, the delivery Maisie had ordered showed up.

Amelia was really enjoying the food and asked, “This tastes amazing. Maisie, where did you order this from?”

“Everlasting Restaurant,” Maisie replied.

Amelia almost choked on her cake. “Wait, isn’t Everlasting Restaurant the fanciest restaurant in Lunova? They do caramel macchiato too?”

“Everlasting Restaurant is owned by the Zuckerberg family,” Daniel said with a smile. “Maisie had the pastry chef make your caramel macchiato and cake especially for you—healthy and all-natural.”

“So it’s the Zuckerberg family’s restaurant…” Amelia grinned. “Does that mean I can have this every single day from now on?”

“Of course! As long as you want it,” Maisie said proudly, tilting her chin up.

Everlasting Restaurant wasn’t even close to being the most profitable business the Zuckerberg family owned—it was just a drop in the bucket for them.

If Amelia wanted it, Maisie would happily give her as much as she liked.

Yeah, I’ll just give it to her! Maisie thought to herself.

After everything that happened with Landon, it just didn’t feel right for Amelia to spend any more of the Kingsley family’s money.

Maisie pulled Daniel aside and whispered, “Let’s give her Everlasting Restaurant. It can be security for her and the baby.”

“Isn’t that supposed to be your engagement gift?” Daniel was taken aback.

Even though Joanna was a terrible person, their father had truly loved Maisie. He had made it clear that Everlasting Restaurant was meant to be Maisie’s engagement gift.

“I’m not getting married, so what do I need engagement gifts for?” Maisie said, pursing her lips.

Her parents’ ending had been so tragic, and Landon and Amelia’s situation wasn’t much better.

She had made up her mind—she was never going to risk her heart for love again.

“Maisie, never say never. When the right person comes along…” Daniel started.

“I don’t believe in love anymore,” Maisie interrupted, not even letting him finish.

“And seriously, Daniel, what’s your deal with Edith? Don’t hurt her again. If it’s not working out, just let her go,” she added.

“Maisie!” Daniel’s eye twitched as he warned, “Don’t go saying anything to Edith. I’m working on it.”
