Chapter 82
The violent impact caused the car to shake violently, and Amelia lost her balance, falling into Landon’s waist with her face down.
Landon gasped in surprise and quickly lifted Amelia up with his left hand.
“I–I didn’t mean to,” Amelia said, lowering her head. Her face visibly turned red.
“Mrs. Kingsley, are you okay?” Aaron hurriedly changed from calling “Mr. Kingsley” to “Mrs. Kingsley” and checked the condition inside the car. As the identity of the perpetrator, Aaron couldn’t let anyone know Landon was in the car.
“We’re fine.” Amelia quickly got out of the car and closed the door behind her. The mountain breeze brushed, and the blush on her face faded somewhat.
Aaron looked at Amelia’s flushed face and asked in surprise, “Your…”
“Because I was scared.” Amelia tried to appear calm, but she couldn’t hide her shyness.
Aaron suddenly realized, ‘They were doing intimate things in the car. Although Mr. Kingsley couldn’t fully move his body, his desires knew no bounds. His recovery must be near.’
“I’m sorry. Did I hurt you?” A man stepped out of the Rolls-Royce, tall and elegantly dressed. He had a noble aura and was polite, making him quite a sight.
Aaron glanced at the license plate and let out a sigh of relief. ‘It’s from Helodia city, so he seems unrelated to Henry.’
“We’re fine, but the car needs repairs,” Aaron said.
The man smiled and handed over a check. “I’m sorry, but I have urgent matters and can’t delay. Here’s the cost of the repairs.”
‘Goodness, three hundred thousand dollars. That’s enough to buy a luxury car. He really is generous,’ Amelia thought and couldn’t help but glance at the man again.
The man also happened to look at Amelia. “Miss, you look familiar. Have we met before?”
“No,” Amelia replied, feeling a bit awkward. She thought, ‘This pickup line is so cliché.’
Aaron sensed the man’s intention as he said, “This is Mrs. Kingsley.”
“Oh, Mrs. Kingsley, nice to meet you.” The man immediately changed his address, displaying gentlemanly manners in every gesture.
Aaron added, “The Kingsley family doesn’t extort people. You can just give 15 thousand dollars for the repair costs.”
“Alright.” The man rewrote the check.
Aaron took it, and the two vehicles parted ways.
Landon’s car was only slightly dented at the rear, so there was no need to change cars.
Landon stared at the signature on the check, deep in thought. ‘Daniel Zuckerberg, the Helodia license plate. Could it be the Zuckerberg family! remember?’
Because of the awkwardness just now, Amelia stopped her massage and obediently sat to the side, even fastening her seatbelt.
Landon glanced at her and offered a faint smile.
The journey from Noraya to Pinecrest took five hours, and they arrived in the evening.
After checking into the hotel, Amelia was eager to visit Kea Lane, the place where Debra had lived.
‘It’s too late. We’ll go tomorrow. Come over and give me a massage first,’ Landon said. After sitting in the wheelchair for five hours, his body felt stiff and uncomfortable. He lay on the bed, desperately needing a massage to relax.
“Should we continue?” Amelia recalled the embarrassing scene in the car, and her ears turned red.
‘Come here.’ Landon closed his eyes, thinking, ‘My sense of touch is becoming more sensitive, and my desire to move around is becoming stronger, so my recovery must be near, right?’
Amelia pouted unhappily, giving a very half-hearted massage.
Landon was dissatisfied. ‘What’s wrong? Don’t you want your salary for today?’
“I do, but…” Amelia bit her lip, unwillingness written all over her face. “I still want to go to Kea Lane.”
Landon pointed outside. ‘The sun is about to set.’
“I know, but this is Pinecrest. No one knows us here, so there won’t be any danger,” Amelia insisted.
‘No way.’ Landon was too tired and just wanted to fall asleep during the massage, not wanting to go out.
Amelia pleaded, “I’ll just take a quick look. I’ll be back in an hour.”
‘Amelia, do you not understand what I’m saying?’ said Landon.
“What? You agreed? Thank you.” Amelia immediately stood up, grabbed her small bag, and dashed out. Her misty blue dress fluttered as she ran, her receding figure resembling a joyful butterfly.
Landon thought helplessly, ‘I didn’t agree at all. She is trying to outsmart me. Unfortunately, going there will only bring her more sadness. Kea Lane is no longer the same. The house where Debra lived has long been demolished and replaced by a café. Even I can’t find any trace of Debra’s life here, let alone her. This trip was just meant to help her let go.”
Amelia arrived at Kea Lane, according to the navigation, where tall buildings crowded the skyline, and traffic was bustling. She stood on the street in a daze, feeling lost.
Diana had said that Debra used to live in a bungalow, but there were no bungalows left anymore.
‘So I can’t find even a trace of my mother?’ Amelia thought sadly, on the verge of tears.
“Mrs. Kingsley.” A familiar voice called to her gently.
Amelia looked up and saw the man she had encountered at the service area earlier, Daniel. He walked toward her in the fading light of the sunset, handsome with a noble aura, looking like a deity.
Amelia quickly wiped her tears and forced a smile. “Hello, Mr. Zuckerberg.”
“Why are you crying?” Daniel asked, looking at Amelia, whose eyes were red but still trying to maintain a smile. He found it amusing, thinking, ‘The wife of Norava’s richest man is such an adorable young lady. The Kingsley family’s taste is quite impressive.”
“I was just a little sentimental,” Amelia replied, her smile turning even more bitter. She almost cried out. After living a second life, she knew how things would happen and had rarely shed tears over her past experiences.
But tonight, standing in the place where Debra once lived, Amelia found no trace of Debra’s existence, and she longed to cry her heart out.
Amelia thought, ‘No wonder Walter and Melissa wouldn’t tell me where my mother’s grave was, even facing going to prison. They already knew this place had changed beyond recognition, and I wouldn’t be able to find it. That means I have to go to them for answers.’
“Are you lost?” Daniel asked gently, like a caring older brother.
Amelia felt unable to build a wall against him as she choked out, “Yes, I can’t find my childhood home.”
“You used to live here?” Daniel’s eyes brightened suddenly. “Do you remember the people here? There was a beautiful woman from out of town!”
“I don’t remember. I don’t remember anything.” The bitterness in Amelia’s heart turned into tears and fell down her cheeks. “I don’t even remember my own mother.”
Covering her face, she crouched down, and her sobs turned into heart–wrenching cries.
Daniel never expected his question would make Amelia so upset. He felt guilty and crouched down beside her, softly coaxing, “Is there anything I can do for you? I’m very good at finding people.” Although he himself had never found the person he was looking for.
“No, no one can help me,” Amelia sobbed into the evening breeze. “My mother passed away over ten years ago."
Daniel frowned slightly, “I’m sorry. I…”
“It has nothing to do with you.” Amelia looked up, her face streaked with tears. “Thank you for keeping me company. Otherwise, I would be too miserable to be here alone.”
Daniel chuckled softly, taking a fresh look at Amelia, thinking, ‘She is dignified and beautiful, exuding an excellent upbringing. She must come from a wealthy family, so she could marry Landon. But how could Landon allow her to wander alone on the street crying?”
“By the way, are you also here looking for someone?” Amelia asked, wiping her tears.
Daniel nodded. “I’m also here looking for my mother, too.”
