Listen to this chapter:

Back in Norava, Amelia took out her motherโ€™s last letter to read again. In her previous life, when she and Zachary went to William to claim the inheritance, there was only the safe deposit box, but she had no idea there was a letter inside.

โ€˜Could my traveling back in time have changed the inheritance itself? Thatโ€™s impossibleโ€ฆโ€™ Amelia thought. โ€˜My background couldnโ€™t have just changed out of nowhere. So, did Zachary take the letter and hide it from me?โ€™

Amelia racked her brain, trying to remember. Suddenly, she recalled that Walter had also been there the day she claimed the inheritance in her previous life.

โ€˜He was even holding the tiara, putting on a show with a few cold tears. It was him. He took the letter!โ€™ The realization finally dawned on Amelia.

Her hatred burned even fiercer in her heart.

โ€œDonโ€™t be sad,โ€ Landon said as he gently patted her hand, thinking she was missing her mother. โ€œFrom now on, you have your husband and brother by your side.โ€

โ€œYeah, having you two is all I need.โ€ Amelia carefully tucked the letter away. โ€œIโ€™ve figured out how Zachary died.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ Landonโ€™s heart skipped a few beats, a wave of unease washing over him.

โ€˜Did she find out Porter is in Pinecrest?โ€™ Landon wondered.

โ€œZachary tracked down William for the tiara,โ€ Amelia explained, โ€œbut someone was trying to block me from uncovering the truth and killed him.โ€

Landon secretly breathed a sigh of relief, thinking, โ€˜Thank God, she didnโ€™t connect this to Porter.โ€™

โ€œBut Iโ€™m so curious about the person who fired the gun. Walter is in prison. Who could have hired a killer?โ€ Amelia frowned, still pondering.

Landon, terrified she might guess the truth, quickly interjected, โ€œCarlo killed Zachary. He got what he deserved, so stop overthinking it.โ€

โ€œCarlo?โ€ Amelia gasped. โ€œHe has a gun?โ€

She couldnโ€™t help but wonder, โ€˜If we ever face off again, will my hidden blades even stand a chance? No, thatโ€™s not enough. I need to learn how to handle a gun, too. Iโ€™ll have Landon get me oneโ€ฆโ€™

Landon looked at his timid-yet-brave wife with amusement and said, โ€œHeโ€™s gone. He wonโ€™t come and bother us anymore.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Amelia gasped again, startled.

โ€œI taught him a lesson he wonโ€™t forget,โ€ Landon said flatly.

Not knowing what to say, Amelia placed a hand on her chest and snuggled into Landonโ€™s arms.

โ€˜These past few days have been like a total rollercoaster,โ€™ she thought. โ€˜So many shocks and surprises. What a wild ride! Surely things will be smooth sailing from now on, right?โ€™

โ€œDanielโ€™s coming back tomorrow. Iโ€™ll let him get checked out,โ€ Amelia said, her voice laced with concern.

โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll make the arrangements,โ€ Landon said.

Daniel was still sitting alone in the coffee shop at ten oโ€™clock at night. Lost in thought, his handsome face was tinged with melancholy. The place was closing up. All the other customers had left. He was the only one left.

The manager of the coffee shop walked to and said, โ€œSir, weโ€™reโ€“โ€

โ€œWait.โ€ As the manager was about to step forward and ask Daniel to leave, a woman in a beige trench coat strode into the cafรฉ and interrupted him. It was none other than Giovanna.

The manager turned to her and said, โ€œMiss, weโ€™re about to close.โ€

โ€œStay open late tonight. You can take tomorrow off,โ€ Giovanna said.

The manager looked stunned. โ€œAnd you are?โ€

โ€œA relative of the owner. Iโ€™ll let him know,โ€ Giovanna replied.

โ€œUnderstood, thank you,โ€ the manager said and left.

Giovanna ordered a coffee and sat across from Daniel.

โ€œGiovanna?โ€ Daniel gasped, instinctively straightening up.

โ€˜Oh, the tyranny of family hierarchy strikes againโ€ฆโ€™ Daniel thought.

Giovanna gave him a measured glance while stirring her coffee. โ€œHow much longer are you planning to sit here?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll head back tomorrow.โ€ Daniel looked around warily. โ€œGiovanna, what brings you here?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m here for Amy,โ€ Giovanna said.

Daniel relaxed slightly. โ€œGrandfatherโ€ฆ What does he say?โ€

โ€œOf course, the Hughes family will take care of their kids,โ€ Giovanna said with a cold laugh.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Giovanna. I wonโ€™t tell others about Amyโ€™s background. Iโ€™ll let her and Landon live their quiet life in Norava,โ€ Daniel said reassuringly.

Giovannaโ€™s smile grew even colder. โ€œWith the Kington Gang involved now, do you think she can still have a peaceful life?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Danielโ€™s expression instantly darkened.

Giovanna took a sip of coffee, set the cup down, and fixed Daniel with a steady gaze. โ€œDaniel, youโ€™d better start preparing yourself. Your stepmother wonโ€™t give up without a fight.โ€

โ€œLandon has pretty much dealt with the Meyers family. When I get back, Iโ€™ll send Joanna out to rest,โ€ Daniel said.

โ€˜Iโ€™ve seized most of the power in the Zuckerberg family. Itโ€™s time to let Joanna retire,โ€™ Daniel thought.

Giovanna asked, โ€œDo you miss your dad?โ€

Disgust flashed in Danielโ€™s eyes as he turned his head away sharply. โ€œNo!โ€

โ€œDo you hate him that much?โ€ Giovanna asked.

โ€œHow can I not hate him?โ€ Daniel let out two bitter laughs, raising his eyes to meet Giovannaโ€™s gaze directly. โ€œGiovanna, youโ€™re acting strange today. Have you seen him?โ€

Giovanna nodded. โ€œYeah.โ€

Daniel hesitated, then asked, โ€œSo, about Amyโ€™s true parentageโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat parentage?โ€ Giovanna asked.

Daniel took a deep breath and said, โ€œAmy is my full-blooded sister.โ€

Giovannaโ€™s eyes went wide with shock.

โ€˜Thatโ€™s not what Porter told me the other night,โ€™ she thought. โ€˜All this time, I thought Amy was Aunt Catherineโ€™s child with Caesar!โ€™

โ€œHeโ€™s a coward, a spineless coward who couldnโ€™t even protect his wife and child!โ€ Daniel spat bitterly. โ€œIt was bad enough that I ended up in my stepmotherโ€™s clutches, but how could he just stand by and watch Amy suffer under her foster parents?โ€

Giovanna said, โ€œMaybe he didnโ€™t know Amy was being mistreatedโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThatโ€™s still no excuse for abandoning his wife and daughter.โ€ Danielโ€™s voice rose with emotion, his head beginning to throb again.

He pressed his temples, exhaustion washing over him. โ€œGiovanna, I canโ€™t talk about this anymore,โ€ he said wearily.

โ€œAlright.โ€ Giovanna elegantly crossed her legs. โ€œIโ€™m heading back to Lunova tomorrow. What about you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll go back to Norava to see Amy first and put off returning to Lunova for a few days,โ€ Daniel said. He couldnโ€™t help but think of Edith as he spoke.

โ€˜I canโ€™t believe the pampered lady from the Meyers family is going to teach piano in a backwater like Pinecrest,โ€™ Daniel thought.

โ€œSuit yourself,โ€ Giovanna said, not pressing him further. โ€œYou havenโ€™t come home in years. Come back and visit when you have time. Grandfather misses you very much.โ€

โ€œAlright.โ€ Daniel let out a long, heavy sigh, as if expelling years of pent-up frustration.

He had deliberately kept his distance from the Hughes family to avoid raising Joannaโ€™s suspicions all these years.

โ€˜Now, itโ€™s finally time to return and make amends with Grandfather,โ€™ Daniel thought.

Danielโ€™s head still throbbed with a dull ache. He lifted his hand to press his temples again.

Giovanna finally noticed something was wrong. She asked with concern, โ€œIs your head okay?โ€

โ€œIt hurtsโ€ฆโ€ Daniel murmured weakly.

โ€œStill hurts?โ€ Giovannaโ€™s face turned pale. She shot to her feet and reached for Danielโ€™s pulse.

Daniel brushed her hand away dismissively, but suddenly, his vision went black, and his arm dropped limply to his side.

โ€œDaniel! Daniel!โ€ Giovanna called anxiously.

Daniel felt Giovannaโ€™s frantic cries grow distant as darkness swallowed his consciousness.
