Chapter 169

In Norava, Landon received Edithโ€™s boarding notification and let out a quiet sigh of relief.

โ€˜As expected, that kind-hearted girl still canโ€™t let go of Daniel,โ€™ he thought. โ€˜Itโ€™s a bit underhanded, but it gets the job done. She can get the antidote from Joanna, right?โ€™

After much deliberation, Amelia gritted her teeth and said to Landon, โ€œHoney, Iโ€™m going to Lunova.โ€

Landon smiled calmly. โ€œNo need for you to go.โ€

โ€œDaniel has been isolated and helpless in the Zuckerberg family all these years. Iโ€™ll go to the Hughes family and ask Grandfather to intervene,โ€ Amelia said.

โ€˜Landon has already cornered the Meyers family financially, yet Joanna showed no sign of seeking reconciliation. So, economic pressure alone isnโ€™t enough. I need the Hughes familyโ€™s help,โ€™ Amelia thought.

โ€œThereโ€™s no need for you to go. The Hughes family will intervene. After all, Daniel is a member of their family, too,โ€ Landon said and deleted the notification of Edithโ€™s return.

โ€˜What will the Hughes family do?โ€™ Amelia felt uncertain.

โ€˜Now that Iโ€™ve reappeared and the police have officially initiated the investigation into Momโ€™s poisoning, thereโ€™s no way the Hughes family doesnโ€™t know anything. Yet they still havenโ€™t contacted meโ€ฆโ€™ Amelia thought anxiously.

โ€œHoney, I know you wouldnโ€™t lie to me. But I canโ€™t shake this uneasiness,โ€ Amelia sighed.

She couldnโ€™t help thinking, โ€˜What if the Hughes family just stands by and does nothing, or Joanna is plotting something even more sinisterโ€ฆโ€™

โ€˜No matter what Joanna demands, Iโ€™ll have to yield as long as she comes with the antidote. The residual poison in Danielโ€™s system is more than enough to force our hand.

โ€˜But what if Joanna is hell-bent on finishing off Daniel and refuses to play along?โ€™

Adding to her hatred for the Edwards family, Amelia now had Joanna as her new target.

She and Daniel had grown up under their stepmothersโ€™ harsh care, sharing similar hardships, but Joanna was even more ruthless and cunning than Melissa.

โ€˜I canโ€™t even imagine how Daniel survived all these years. What kind of pain has he been hiding in his heart?โ€™ Amelia wondered.

Landon said gently, โ€œDonโ€™t rush. Letโ€™s wait a little longer. Daniel has lived with this residual poison for twenty years. A little more waiting wonโ€™t make a difference now.โ€

โ€œHoneyโ€ฆโ€ Amelia still looked worried.

Landon said gently, โ€œJust give them some time to respond.โ€

Landonโ€™s phone lit up again. This time, it was a message from Giovanna: [Iโ€™m going to see Porter.]

Seeing it, Landon thought, โ€˜Porter is Danielโ€™s biological father. He certainly wonโ€™t just stand by!

Landon felt the odds were in their favor. He gently reassured Amelia again.

Amelia finally took Landonโ€™s advice.

โ€˜Haste makes waste,โ€™ she thought. โ€˜Perhaps waiting will bring a turn of fortune.โ€™

Chapter 169

Several days later, in Lunova.

Edith dropped to her knees, tears streaming down her face as she pleaded, โ€œAunt Joanna, Iโ€™m begging you. Daniel is suffering so much. Please give me the antidoteโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEdith, what nonsense are you saying?โ€ Joannaโ€™s expression darkened slightly as she reached out to pull Edith to her feet.

Through tears, Edith pleaded, โ€œAunt Joanna, I know everything now. I wonโ€™t interfere with your affairs, but Daniel is truly pitiful. Please, have mercy on himโ€ฆโ€

Joanna scoffed, โ€œWhatโ€™s so pitiful about him? Edith, donโ€™t forget who used and dumped you.โ€

Edith trembled, biting her lip as silent tears rolled down her cheeks.

A long while later, Edith gave a wry smile. โ€œMaybe this is my karmaโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEdith! I wonโ€™t allow you to belittle yourself!โ€ Joanna snapped, her brow furrowing. โ€œYouโ€™re the girl of the Meyers family, a distinguished socialiteโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAre you going to keep gaslighting me?โ€ Edith asked.

โ€˜Aunt Joannaโ€™s like this, and so is Giovanna. Theyโ€™ve both been playing me for a fool all along,โ€™ Edith thought bitterly.

Edith cried out, โ€œYouโ€™ve already caused Catherineโ€™s death, and now you want me to marry Daniel? Weโ€™re responsible for his motherโ€™s death. Even if I marry him as you arranged, how could I be happy?

โ€œDaniel has a conscience. Thatโ€™s why he refused to marry me. And for that, youโ€™d have him killed? Heโ€™s the Zuckerberg familyโ€™s only male heir. What could you possibly gain from his death?โ€

Edith blurted out all the ugly truths without restraint.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Somehow, Maisie had appeared on the stairs, now standing frozen as she stared in shock at the scene unfolding in the living room.

โ€œEdith, what did you just say?โ€ Maisie rushed downstairs and asked, her voice trembling.

Edith just looked at her and wept.

Maisie stared at her for a long moment, then slumped to the floor in despair. โ€œSo, itโ€™s trueโ€ฆโ€

There had always been rumors in Lunova that her mother was the other woman who broke up a marriage. However, Maisie had always refused to believe them because Catherine had died young, and her fatherโ€™s marital status before marrying her mother was marked as โ€œwidowed.โ€

โ€˜Turned out the rumors werenโ€™t just true. They were even more appalling than Iโ€™d imagined,โ€™ Maisie thought disappointedly.

โ€œEdith!โ€ Joanna roared in fury, then slapped Edith across the face.

Edith collapsed to the ground, a trickle of blood at the corner of her mouth. She pleaded, โ€œDaniel is innocent. Aunt Joanna, youโ€™ve used him for years. Itโ€™s time to let him goโ€ฆโ€

The mere thought of her brother lying in the hospital, tormented by migraines, sent waves of guilt crashing through Maisieโ€™s heart.

Maisie also fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face as she pleaded, โ€œMom, please spare Daniel.โ€

Joanna trembled with rage. โ€œAre you two trying to drive me to an early grave?โ€ she snapped. โ€œHow many times do I have to say it? I didnโ€™t poison Daniel.โ€

โ€œIf it werenโ€™t for Danielโ€™s poisoning, do you think Catherine would have willingly left Porter?โ€ Edith asked.

Joanna snapped, โ€œEverything I did was for you. Without my painstaking scheming, would the Meyers family have ever made it into high society? And Maisie, youโ€™d have remained an illegitimate child your whole life.โ€

Joannaโ€™s fury was a full confession.

Furious and heartbroken, Maisie shouted back at her mother, โ€œThen why did you even give birth to me? Did I ever get a say in this? If hurting Daniel is the price for my existence, Iโ€™d rather not exist.โ€

Joanna was left speechless.

โ€œAunt Joannaโ€ฆโ€ Edith whispered weakly.

โ€œGuards! Lock them both in their rooms. No one leaves without my permission!โ€ Joanna barked, her head pounding from the confrontation. She couldnโ€™t stand arguing with these stubborn girls any longer.

After all, one was her beloved niece, the other her daughter.

โ€˜Surely I canโ€™t just hit them into submission, can I?โ€™ Joanna thought. โ€˜Iโ€™ll confine them for now. Theyโ€™ll come around eventually!โ€™

โ€œAunt Joanna, no!โ€ Edith gasped in shock. She never imagined her trip to Lunova to beg for the antidote would end with Joanna putting her under house arrest.

But her resistance was futile.

The Zuckerberg familyโ€™s bodyguards dragged Edith and Maisie into a room and locked the door behind them.

โ€œItโ€™s overโ€ฆ Danielโ€™s finishedโ€ฆโ€ Edith clutched her chest in agony.

Through tear-filled eyes, Maisie looked at Edith and realized, for the first time in all these years, that Edith wasnโ€™t so bad-looking after all.

Maisie hugged Edith tightly, and they broke down in each otherโ€™s arms.

โ€œMais, we canโ€™t save himโ€ฆโ€ Edith sobbed, her voice breaking. โ€œWhat can we do?โ€

Maisie gritted her teeth. โ€œThereโ€™s still someoneโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWho?โ€ Edith asked urgently.

โ€œAmelia.โ€ With that, Maisie pulled out her phone, quickly found Ameliaโ€™s number, and dialed it.

Amelia picked up right away.

โ€œAmelia,โ€ Maisie asked, her voice choked with tears, โ€œhowโ€™s Daniel?โ€

โ€œMaisie?โ€ Amelia answered, surprised to see Maisieโ€™s name on the screen. โ€œDanielโ€™s condition is stable for now, but honestly, I have no idea how much longer heโ€™ll need to stay in the hospital.โ€

Maisie said, โ€œAmelia, listen to me! Edith and I are under house arrest now. Youโ€™re the only one who can help Danielโ€ฆโ€

Ameliaโ€™s heart clenched. โ€œTell me what to do,โ€ she said anxiously.

โ€œGo capture Basile Twain. Heโ€™s my motherโ€™s right-hand man and holds incriminating evidence against her. Use him as leverage against my mother,โ€ said Maisie.

In the first-floor living room, the butler served Joanna coffee, leaned in, and whispered, โ€œMrs. Zuckerberg, as expected, Maisie contacted Ameliaโ€ฆโ€ โ€œPerfect.โ€ Joanna let out a heavy sigh of relief. โ€œMake preparations. Weโ€™ll leave for Norava immediately. Cut off their phones and internet access.โ€

โ€œGot it,โ€ the butler replied.
