Looking up at Amelia with innocent eyes, Landen said sweetly, โAmelia, youโre so pretty.โ
Amelia took a deep breath and thought, โThe child is innocent. I canโt let my preconceptions about adults affect how I treat Landen.โ
After composing herself, Amelia smiled and asked, โLanden, are you hungry? Letโs go inside and have something to eat.โ
โThen I can finally return the child to Aiden,โ she thought.
โIโm not hungry. Ms. Meyers made me spaghetti,โ Landen said.
โWhy donโt you watch some cartoons for a bit?โ Amelia suggested gently.
Amelia pulled up a cartoon on her phone, ready to watch it with Landen on the porch.
But Landen shook his head. โUncle Aiden says too much TV isnโt good.โ
Amelia didnโt know what to say. After all, she had no experience taking care of children.
โAmelia, this place is so beautiful. Could you show me around?โ Landen asked eagerly.
โSure,โ Amelia replied.
With permission granted, Landen eagerly took her hand and skipped excitedly by her side, his joy unmistakable.
โHis little hand is so soft! And that smile is just the sweetest,โ Amelia thought.
Before she knew it, she found herself smiling along with him.
After strolling around Young Villaโs garden, Amelia and Landen grew closer. They found a spot to sit and have some juice.
Amelia gazed into those eyes, much like Landonโs, and couldnโt help asking, โYouโre such a handsome boy, Landen. I bet your mom and dad are good-looking too.โ
โOf course! My mommy is the prettiest in the world,โ Landen declared proudly.
โThen, do you have a photo of your mom?โ Amelia asked gently.
Landen shook his head regretfully. โNo,โ he said. โMy mommy doesnโt like having her picture taken.โ
โOhโฆโ Landen replied, looking quite down.
Amelia thought, โBack then, all the moms loved showing off their kids online and taking selfies with them. But Paloma doesnโt even take photos with her son? That doesnโt make sense.โ
โWhat about your dad?โ Amelia asked gently.
โIโve never met my dad,โ Landen said.
A fleeting shadow of sadness crossed Landenโs cute face, but it vanished as quickly as it came.
โBut thatโs okay,โ he added brightly. โIโm satisfied enough to have my mommy and Uncle Aiden.โ
Ameliaโs heart ached for him.
โMerry Group is a topโtier company, and being the Kyle familyโs sonโinโlaw is an honor. So, why isnโt Paloma living with her husband?โ Amelia wondered.
โAmelia, do you have any kids?โ Landen asked curiously.
Amelia composed herself and smiled. โNot yet,โ she replied.
Landen looked disappointed. โOh, thatโs a shame. If you do, Iโd love to be their friend.โ
โMaybe weโll have that chance someday.โ Amelia smiled, glanced around to confirm they were alone, then gently probed, โYour blonde hair is so lovely. Is your mommyโs hair blonde too?โ
โNope. My mommyโs hair is black, and so are her eyes,โ Landen said.
Amelia thought, โWait, Paloma is fullโblooded Nusminish? But Aiden is mixedโrace. Shouldnโt she at least have some foreign features?โ
Her heart skipped a beat. The overwhelming urge to see Paloma in person left her breathless.
โWait! I can ask Edith,โ Amelia thought. โEdith is friends with Paloma. She must have seen Paloma. Girls can blossom as they grow up. Even though no one knows what Kayla will look like as an adult, there must still be some recognizable traces.โ
Thinking of this, Amelia quickly texted Edith. [Send me a photo of Paloma.]
Edith replied: [Sorry, but Paloma hates having her picture taken. Plus, sheโs got a severe hereditary allergy. Her mask never leaves her face.]
Edithโs reply hit Amelia like bricks, leaving her reeling.
โA severe hereditary allergyโฆ!โ Amelia thought. โBut Gloria and Landonโฆ None of the Kingsley family members had any history of allergies. Could I have been wrong?โ
โHey, Mrs. Kingsley.โ Just then, Aiden reappeared.
Heโd had a few drinks, a rosy flush coloring his cheeks, his charming eyes sparkling with tipsy mischief.
โUncle Aiden!โ Landen hopped down from the stool and dashed over.
Aiden scooped him up with a warm smile and asked, โWere you good? Did you behave?โ
Wrapping his arms around Aidenโs neck, Landen pleaded, โIโve been good, Uncle Aiden. Amelia wants to see a nice photo of Mommy. Do you have one?โ
โNope, I donโt have one either,โ Aiden gave Amelia a meaningful look.
Though it was the innocent words of a child, Amelia felt utterly mortified.
โLanden is such a handsome boy. His mother must be beautiful too,โ Amelia said awkwardly, scrambling for an out.
Aiden smirked and said, โOf course. Just look at this handsome face, and youโll get the idea.โ
โYou? Nothing special,โ Amelia snorted. โHere, take your kid. Iโm off to find my husband.โ
Aidenโs smile deepened. He called after her, โMrs. Kingsley, if you ever get the chance to visit Dreicean, Iโll introduce you to my sister.โ
โNot likely. Iโm not interested in Dreicean,โ Amelia said, waving dismissively without turning back.
Her heart raced, a wave of guilt washing over her, as if others had seen right through her.
โDamn that Aiden! What the hell is he up to?โ Amelia wondered.
โHoney, come here.โ Landon spotted her and waved her over to sit beside him.
Noticing she seemed unsettled, Landon leaned in and asked softly, โHoney, whatโs wrong?โ
โAre you done here?โ Amelia asked.
โAlmost,โ Landon replied.
โCome on, letโs go out for a walk.โ Amelia gritted her teeth and decided to let Landon meet Landen in person.
โI might as well let Landon see those eyes for himself,โ she thought.
But Aiden had already taken Landen and left when they made it outside.
Amelia clenched her teeth in frustration and suspected that Aiden did it deliberately, but she had no evidence.
She thought, โAfter twenty years, almost no one remembers that the Kingsley family once had a missing eldest daughter.
โAs for Aiden, being a Dreiceanian, he is even less likely to know about it.
โIf Paloma isnโt Kayla, then Iโm just making a fool of myself, acting like some paranoid lunatic!โ
โHoney, whatโs wrong?โ Landonโs gaze darkened as he sensed something was wrong.
Amelia sighed. โThese parties are so boring.โ
Landon chuckled softly and said, โYouโre Mrs. Kingsley now. Youโll have to get used to it.โ
Amelia let out a weary sigh.
Landon glanced at her and teased, โHoney, I remember you used to be completely in your element at events like this.โ
โThat was beforeโฆโ Amelia replied.
At the same time, she thought, โWithout Aiden around, Iโd be completely in my element. But with him here, I canโt relax. Itโs like being prey under a hunterโs watchful gaze.โ
โDonโt worry, Iโll spare you from it unless necessary,โ Landon said, wrapping his arm around Ameliaโs waist with a playful, mysterious smile. โCheer up. Iโve got some good news for you.โ
Amelia, usually curious about everything, asked halfโheartedly, โOh? What is it?โ
Landon said, โThe police of Pinecrest just called. Theyโve got a breakthrough in your motherโs case.โ
In prison, Walter worked cheerfully, grateful for the wellโorganized system. โAt least the Zuckerberg family canโt reach their hands here,โ he thought.
Yet he never in his wildest dreams expected that the next time he saw Amelia would be when he was staring death in the face.
โYouโre the one who poisoned my mother. Iโve got the evidence now.โ Amelia glared furiously at the grayโhaired man behind the roof glass.
Walterโs eyes darted nervously as he stammered, โNoโฆ It wasnโt meโฆโ
Amelia slammed the police investigation report onto the table, her eyes blazing with fury. โParaquat. You bought it. You put it in my motherโs milk. Walter, you committed premeditated murder.โ
โHow could this be?โ Walterโs face turned ashen. โItโs been so many yearsโฆ How could they still uncover the truth?โ
