Chapter 193

Sandra lifted her chin proudly. โ€œOf course. A child without protection wonโ€™t stay helpless forever. Sheโ€™ll learn to survive on her own.โ€

โ€œThen, congratulations on learning how to survive,โ€ Amelia said, setting down her coffee cup and standing up to leave.

โ€œAmelia, donโ€™t you want to know how your husband is doing now?โ€ Sandra called after her.

Amelia paused in her tracks, a strong sense of unease rising in her heart.

If it was coming from Sandra, it couldnโ€™t be anything good.

But she still couldnโ€™t help glancing back. โ€œYou knew?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s never coming back. Amelia, youโ€™re a widow now,โ€ Sandra said, her eyes gleaming with schadenfreude as she looked at Amelia, feeling absolutely thrilled inside.

After all this time competing, she had finally won a round.

With Aidenโ€™s obsessive, almost unhinged personality, Amelia was bound to suffer.

His influence ran deep, his reach long.

The idea that the Zuckerberg family could protect her was nothing more than a delusion.

โ€œYouโ€™re lying!โ€ Amelia yelled. โ€œSandra, youโ€™re lying!โ€

โ€œIf Iโ€™m lying, strike me down,โ€ Sandra shrugged. โ€œTell me, havenโ€™t you been unable to reach him for ages? Thatโ€™s because heโ€™s dead. Of course he canโ€™t contact you.โ€

โ€œAmelia, Landon loved you so much! If he wasnโ€™t dead, do you really think heโ€™d let you worry like this?โ€ Sandra taunted.

โ€œAmelia, I admit Iโ€™ve lied to you more times than I can count since we were kids. But this time, I swear, Iโ€™m telling the truth.โ€

โ€œShut up!โ€ Amelia grabbed the cup and threw it at Sandra.

The bodyguard reacted fast and caught the cup.

Sandra grinned. โ€œAmelia, you canโ€™t hurt me anymore. Youโ€™re really cluelessโ€“you havenโ€™t been able to reach him for so long and you never even thought to call the cops.โ€

Every word out of her mouth was like a bad omen.

Amelia didnโ€™t want to believe it, but she was terrified.

Sandra had really gotten to her.

Those words struck her like thunder on a clear day, making her mind go blank and her knees nearly buckle.

She kept taking deep breaths, barely holding on to her sanity as she forced out, โ€œHow do you know?โ€

โ€œBecause he crossed the Kington Gang,โ€ Sandra replied with a sly, mysterious smile.

โ€˜The Kington Gang? Joanna?โ€™ Amelia thought.

With this clue in hand, Amelia managed to calm herself down. She gave Sandra one last look, held her head high, and walked away.

But after just a few steps, her back hunched again, and she staggered forward.

Sandra watched Ameliaโ€™s panicked, retreating figure, humming a little tune in delight.

โ€˜Amelia, serves you right! Finally, itโ€™s your turn to suffer! Hahaha!โ€™ Sandra thought.

โ€œLetโ€™s go!โ€ Sandra called out, then turned on her heel and walked off with her head held high.

Once Amelia stepped into the elevator, she straightened her back, her gaze firm and determined.

Maybe not everything Sandra said was a lie, but it certainly wasnโ€™t the whole truth either. Still, Amelia had managed to catch an important clue from her words.

The Kington Gang.

At the elevator doors, Edith had been waiting for quite some time.

When she saw Ameliaโ€™s pale face and bloodshot eyes, she was startled. โ€œAmeliaโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine,โ€ Amelia said, taking a deep breath and striding back to the room.

Edith was left dumbfounded.

Amelia looked like sheโ€™d just been shaken up, but somehow, she seemed to be holding it together just fine.

โ€œAmelia,โ€ Edith called out, hurrying after her.

Once the door was shut, Amelia finally spoke. โ€œItโ€™s the Kington Gang. Itโ€™s related to them.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

Edithโ€™s face went pale, and she stumbled back.

โ€œEdith, you know about the Kington Gang too?โ€ Amelia asked in surprise.

Just from the name, one could tell the Kington Gang was a criminal syndicate. If they dared to go after Landon, they had to be a seriously powerful international organization.

Edith lived such a sheltered lifeโ€“how could she possibly know about something like this?

โ€œItโ€™s over, itโ€™s overโ€ฆโ€ Edith muttered.

Her ears were buzzing, and her face turned as pale as a sheet.

Amelia stepped forward and grabbed her cousinโ€™s shoulders. โ€œWait, you know about them? Edith, please, tell meโ€“where can I find the Kington Gang?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know where they are, but Iโ€ฆโ€ Edith choked out, her tears falling with a sudden drop.

She turned around and slipped off her top.

The tattoo just below her shoulder blade came into Ameliaโ€™s view. Her eyes went wide. โ€œYou have a tattoo?โ€

โ€œThis is the Kington Gangโ€™s tattoo,โ€ Edith said bitterly.

โ€˜What?โ€™ Ameliaโ€™s mind went completely blank with shock.

It took her a long moment to snap out of it. โ€œWaitโ€ฆ youโ€™re with the Kington Gang too?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not!โ€ Edith shouted, her voice cracking with panic.

Her sudden outburst made Amelia scared.

โ€œI donโ€™t even remember when I got this tattoo. It was my auntโ€ฆโ€ Edith was crying harder and harder. โ€œI wanted to get it removed, but nobody dares to help meโ€ฆโ€

That tattoo felt like a mark of shame she could never get rid of, burned right into her skin.

And the worst part was her own beloved aunt who forced it on her.

She couldnโ€™t even find it in herself to hate her for it.

โ€œJoanna?โ€ Amelia asked with a faint, bitter smile.

It really was her behind all this.

Amelia immediately called Maisie. โ€œWhereโ€™s your mom?โ€

โ€œMy momโ€ฆ?โ€ Maisie hesitated, then her voice grew guarded. โ€œAmelia, why are you asking about my mom? Sheโ€™s been behaving herself latelyโ€“donโ€™t you dare mess with her again!โ€

โ€œMais,โ€ Amelia called gently.

The way Amelia said her name, so familiar and warm, instantly reminded Maisie of Daniel.

Thatโ€™s what Daniel used to call her.

โ€œMais, youโ€™ve helped me before. I wonโ€™t hurt you,โ€ Amelia said softly, her voice calm and reassuring, slowly easing Maisieโ€™s tension.

If Amelia had any ill intentions, Joanna would be dead by now.

โ€œWhat do you want?โ€ Maisie asked.

Amelia said, โ€œLandon is missing. Sandra says it has something to do with the Kington Gang.โ€

Maisie was stunned. โ€˜The Kington Gang? What the hell is that?โ€™

โ€œYour mom has that tattoo, doesnโ€™t she?โ€ Amelia asked.

Maisieโ€™s heart was pounding with anxiety. โ€œMy momโ€™s been at the Zuckerberg Estate this whole timeโ€“she hasnโ€™t left, and she canโ€™t even reach anyone outside. Thereโ€™s just no way sheโ€™s involved in any of this.โ€

โ€œAre you sure, Maisie?โ€ Amelia pressed.

โ€œIโ€™m sure,โ€ Maisie replied firmly.

Maisie immediately snapped a selfie and sent it over.

The time and location matched up perfectly.

โ€˜Could it really not be Joanna?โ€™ Amelia wondered, doubt creeping into her mind.

โ€œOkay, thanks, Maisie,โ€ Amelia said, biting her lip.

Maisie hesitated, then asked anxiously, โ€œLandon... what happened to him?โ€

Sandra said heโ€™s dead.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Maisieโ€™s mind went blank with shock.

โ€œNo way! How could that be?โ€ she blurted out, her voice trembling.

โ€œExactly, how could that be? He hasnโ€™t even seen the baby yet of course he has to come back,โ€ Amelia sighed, then ended the call.

Maisie clutched her chest, struggling to catch her breath, anxiety twisting in her gut.

Amelia was pregnant, Landon had disappeared, and now it was all somehow tied to the Kington Gang.

โ€œMaisie, who was that on the phone?โ€ Joanna asked, suddenly appearing by the stairs.

The Zuckerberg Estate was completely cut off from the outside worldโ€“only Maisieโ€™s phone could receive calls from approved family contacts.

But all this time, no one had ever called them.

So when the phone finally rang today, Joanna couldnโ€™t help feeling both excited and curious.

Sunlight streamed in at an angle, but even in the brightest light, Joanna looked like a venomous snake crawling out from the shadows. No amount of sunshine could wash away that chilling aura around her.

โ€œAmelia called. She said Landon is missing,โ€ Maisie said, looking at her mother with a heavy heart. โ€œMom, she thinks it was the Kington Gangโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOh, is that so? Hahahaโ€ฆโ€ Joanna burst out laughing, clearly delighted.

Maisie frowned. โ€œMom, does this have anything to do with you?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Joanna replied, her tone casual.

โ€œMom!โ€

Maisie felt like she was about to faint. โ€œYou promised Daniel youโ€™d stop causing troubleโ€ฆโ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re the ones who locked me up! The headquarters couldnโ€™t find me, so of course they had to investigate the whole thing!โ€ Joanna sneered. โ€œThey deserve it!โ€

Maisie was speechless. She couldnโ€™t figure out how her mom could still manage to cause trouble even while being locked up.

Maisie hesitated, then said softly, โ€œMom, pleaseโ€ฆ just tell them to let Landon goโ€ฆโ€
