Listen to this chapter:

โ€œMadam, watch out,โ€ the crowd gasped in alarm. Even Aaron hadnโ€™t expected Henry would attack Amelia in public. Ameliaโ€™s face went pale, but before she could react, a female secretary darted in front of her desk and caught the ashtray.

โ€œMadam, are you alright?โ€ The other secretaries were in a frenzy, and they surrounded Amelia with worried looks and frantic questions.

Amelia took a deep breath to steady herself. Though her face still showed her fear, she was unharmed. She turned to look at the woman who had shielded her. It was Brooke, Landonโ€™s bodyguard.

She was tall and athletic, exuding a heroic spirit, looking every bit like a soldier on the battlefield.

Feeling a wave of security wash over her, Amelia nodded and said, โ€œBrooke, thank you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just doing my job,โ€ Brooke replied and stepped back without so much as a flicker of emotion on her face.

Henry jabbed a trembling finger in Brookeโ€™s direction and stammered, โ€œYโ€“youโ€™re protecting her?โ€

โ€œIt is my duty to protect Mr. and Mrs. Kingsley,โ€ Brooke answered, her icy tone enough to cut through steel.

โ€œWell, well, you guys are amazing.โ€ Henry slammed the door and stormed out.

It was clear he had a deep fear of Brooke, though the reason remained a mystery to Amelia. She wasnโ€™t about to question it.

Landon had assured her that Brooke would keep her safe. That was good enough for her.

Aaron, meanwhile, was sweating bullets. The last thing he wanted was for Amelia to be scared off on her first day. Wiping his cold sweat, he said, โ€œMrs. Kingsley, please donโ€™t let todayโ€™s incident bother you. With Brooke around, Henry wonโ€™t dare do that again.โ€

Amelia nodded and instructed, โ€œBring me the documents that need my signature.โ€

โ€œRight away,โ€ replied Aaron.

Henry had been a festering problem in the company for a while, a thorn no one could seem to remove. That Amelia had the authority to deal with him gave everyone a glimmer of hope.

But at the same time, whispers of doubt began to circulate. โ€˜Mrs. Kingsley has zero work experience. Can she really steer Kingsley Group in the right direction?โ€™

The senior executives and managers filed in one after another throughout the day, each presenting their documents for Amelia to sign. However, she didnโ€™t sign a single one, focusing instead on forming an impression of each person.

Kingsley Groupโ€™s operations were massive, and Amelia wasnโ€™t about to risk making a wrong call. She intended to take everything home and consult with Landon first.

By the end of the day, those whoโ€™d initially been optimistic about her leadership were scratching their heads. โ€˜Whatโ€™s her deal? Does she even know management?โ€™

โ€œIโ€™ll review todayโ€™s documents and give you all my decisions tomorrow,โ€ Amelia announced, stacking the files and handing them off to Aaron before calling it a day.

Not long after, rumors about her background were swirling within the company. Someone had dug up her past, and the gossip spread like wildfire.

A clerk whispered, โ€œDid you hear? CEOโ€™s wife was engaged to Zachary before, but then she dumped him and slept with Mr. Kingsley.โ€

Another clerk replied, โ€œSeriously? So thatโ€™s how she got this position. Shame for her.โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t look like she knows the first thing about running a business,โ€ someone else joined the chat.

Another clerk uttered his guess. โ€œOh my, is this some scheme? Maybe sheโ€™s trying to get her hands on Kingsley Groupโ€™s secrets and pass them off to Zachary while Mr. Kingsleyโ€™s in a coma.โ€

Amelia could hear every snide remark, whether whispered or spoken outright. But she didnโ€™t care. She knew those were baseless rumors, and time would prove her worth.

โ€œMrs. Kingsley, are you taking these home to consult Mr. Kingsley?โ€ Aaron asked tentatively as they left.

Amelia nodded and answered, โ€œActually, Iโ€™m not completely clueless about business, but Iโ€™d rather not risk burning through your bossโ€™s fortune on day one.โ€

โ€œCould Iโ€ฆ maybe sit in on it?โ€ Aaron asked hesitantly, a hopeful glint in his eye.

โ€œMan, itโ€™s been three months since Mr. Kingsley went under. I really miss hearing his voice,โ€ thought Aaron.

โ€œNope.โ€ Amelia shut him down firmly.

What Aaron didnโ€™t know and couldnโ€™t know was that Amelia had an uncanny ability to hear Landonโ€™s inner thoughts. She figured it was some kind of gift granted after her rebirth. But if word ever got out, sheโ€™d be labeled a freak in no time.

โ€œWellโ€ฆโ€ Aaron sighed, holding the stack of documents like a wounded child. โ€œMrs. Kingsley, youโ€™re so stingy. Youโ€™re hogging Mr. Kingsley all to yourself.โ€

โ€œUmโ€ฆโ€ Amelia wasnโ€™t sure whether to laugh or roll her eyes. โ€œWell, how about you take over and hog him instead?โ€

โ€œNo thanks,โ€ Aaron mumbled. โ€œHaving you by his side is definitely better.โ€

Awkwardly, he escorted Amelia to the door, but before he could leave, a thunderous roar echoed from inside. โ€œMy grandson got married, and no one told me? Gloria, do I even exist in your world anymore?!โ€

The voice, though raspy with age, carried enough force to rival a hurricane. Ameliaโ€™s heart sank, and she thought, โ€˜Did Henry stir up trouble at home? Oops, Iโ€™ve dragged Gloria into my mess.โ€™

Aaron said nervously, โ€œThat sounds like Mrs. Donna Kingsley. Sheโ€™s no pushover.โ€

โ€œDo they come over to cause trouble often?โ€ Amelia asked, already dreading the answer.

Aaron replied, โ€œNot often, but every time they do, they give Ms. Gloria a hard time. I bet Henry ratted you out. They wanted a spot on the board but didnโ€™t get it. Now Iโ€™m calling the shots. Of course Henryโ€™s bitter.โ€ Amelia took a deep breath and braced herself to face the trouble she caused.

Aaron grabbed her arm in a panic. โ€œMrs. Kingsley, maybe you should stay out of it now. Let Ms. Gloria deal with them first.โ€

Amelia said with a faint smile, โ€œTheyโ€™re here for me. If I hide, they wonโ€™t leave. Besides, everyoneโ€™s got a few unreasonable relatives. Iโ€™m used to it.โ€

โ€œBrooke, follow her,โ€ Aaron said.

Brooke stepped out of the car, cool and composed, falling into step behind Amelia.

With Brookeโ€™s reassuring presence, Amelia walked in with her head held high. Sure enough, the scene inside was as chaotic as she feared. Donna, Henry, and Henryโ€™s family were there, and poor Gloria looked pale and angry, struggling to even catch her breath.

Seeing the scene, Ameliaโ€™s blood boiled. Five against one? Thatโ€™s shameless.

โ€œGloria, Iโ€™m home,โ€ Amelia called cheerfully, her radiant smile completely ignoring the tense atmosphere.

Gloria froze for a second and asked, โ€œYouโ€™re home so early? Isnโ€™t it still work hours?โ€

Gloria thought internally, โ€˜Oh no, I havenโ€™t kicked these pests out yet. Ameliaโ€™s so timid. What if they scare her off? I finally got such a good daughter-in-law. If she runs, what do I do?โ€™

โ€œI missed Landon, so I came back earlier to see him,โ€ Amelia replied smoothly, her gaze sweeping over the visitors. โ€œOh, we have guests?โ€

โ€œAmy, lookโ€ฆโ€ Gloria opened her mouth to explain but was immediately cut off.

โ€œGloria, shut your mouth.โ€ Donna barked. Despite her advanced age, she was as sharp and commanding as a general. Her cloudy eyes gleamed with a menacing light. It could tell by her appearance that she was hard to deal with.

Gloria swallowed her anger and forced a smile for Ameliaโ€™s sake. โ€œAmy, let me introduce you. This is Landonโ€™s grandmother, Donna. Thatโ€™s his uncle, aunt, and their kids.โ€

Amelia maintained a polite demeanor, giving a nod. โ€œPleasure to meet you.โ€

โ€œPleasure, my foot,โ€ Henry snapped, glaring daggers at her. โ€œYou werenโ€™t so polite at the office today.โ€ His tone was venomous, but his anger seemed oddly restrained, especially when his gaze flickered nervously toward Brooke.

Ameliaโ€™s curiosity piqued. โ€˜Has Brooke beaten him up before? Why is he so afraid of Brooke?โ€™

โ€œAmelia? Are you Zacharyโ€™s ex-fiancรฉe?โ€ Donnaโ€™s tone was dripping with disdain as her sharp eyes studied Amelia from head to toe.

Amelia thought, โ€˜Here we go. Time to dig up my past.โ€™

โ€œShe was just dating Zachary, not engaged,โ€ Gloria interjected.

โ€œOh, really? Funny, because I heard the Foster family claimed her as their future daughter-in-law.โ€ Donna let out a sarcastic laugh before adding, โ€œI also heard she had some mysterious surgery. Sounds like a setup to me.โ€

โ€œYou think I staged an operation just to sneak into Landonโ€™s ward?โ€ Amelia asked with a calm smile, her tone light yet unyielding.

โ€œListen, Iโ€™ve seen plenty of your type.โ€ Donnaโ€™s voice rose, sharp and accusatory. โ€œYouโ€™re clearly in cahoots with the Fosters, trying to worm your way into Kingsley Group and steal our company.โ€

โ€œDonna, thatโ€™s enough.โ€ Gloria stomped her foot in frustration. โ€œThatโ€™s a ridiculous accusation!โ€

Donna let out a cold laugh. โ€œRidiculous? Iโ€™ve got proof.โ€
