Chapter 207
Amelia pressed her lips together and followed Daniel and Maisie into the Zuckerberg familyโs home.
Edith chattered away, trying to comfort her, and even said, โJust treat this place as your own home.โ
But as Amelia looked around the unfamiliar house, a wave of sadness crept over her. This wasnโt her home. Even when her mother was still around, this place already belonged to Joanna. Her father had never mentioned her, let alone acknowledged her.
โIโm older than you, so you should call me โBig Sis,โโ Maisie said, lifting her chin proudly.
Amelia smiled. โBig Sis.โ
Maisie froze for a moment, then turned her head away, trying to hide the tears welling up in her eyes.
โAmelia, what should we do now?โ Edith asked. โIs there any chance Aiden will wake up?โ
โI really donโt know. Jonas went to see his master to see if thereโs anything he can do,โ Amelia replied.
The long flight had really worn her out, and she was feeling drowsy again. All she wanted was to crawl into bed and enjoy a good, comfortable sleep now.
Maisie pointed to the second floor. โYour room is upstairs. Itโs all set up for you, go get some rest!โ
โThanks, Big Sis,โ Amelia said. Yawning, she pushed open the door to her room.
To her surprise, the place looked almost exactly like her old one back in Norava. It was obvious Maisie had put a lot of thought and effort into it.
Amelia leaned in and whispered to Daniel, โMaisie is really a good person. Please thank her for me, okay?โ
โSure thing. Just get some rest. Iโm heading over to Project Azureveil headquarters,โ Daniel replied.
โOkay,โ Amelia said.
Even in this unfamiliar room, there was a comforting sense of warmth, and Amelia soon drifted off to sleep.
Downstairs, Maisie turned to the servants and ordered, โKeep it down, everyone. Donโt disturb the pregnant ladyโs rest.โ
Edith couldnโt help but chuckle, โYouโre getting really thoughtful these days!โ
โItโs not like I have a choice, she just looks so pitiful,โ Maisie grumbled, then let out a sigh. โHey, Edith, isnโt it weird? Landon has been missing for ages, but she still wonโt let go.โ
โPerhaps itโs her faith in it that keeps her going,โ Edith said.
Edith couldnโt really understand it either, but she was genuinely relieved that Amelia hadnโt been crushed by everything. Even at her lowest, Amelia was still fighting to save herself.
โHow about you? How long would you keep holding on for my brother?โ Maisie asked.
Edith paused, then turned her head away a bit awkwardly. โWhy should I hold on for him? Heโs not anyone special to me.โ
โWhat are you talking about? Heโs totally been chasing after you. Havenโt you noticed?โ Maisie stepped in front of her, staring right into her eyes.
Edithโs gaze darted away. โNo, I really havenโt.โ
โErโฆโ Maisie was at a loss. โBut you two have been hanging out almost every single day lately!โ
โThatโs just because of Amelia,โ Edith giggled. โAlright, stop with the nonsense, letโs go get some coffee?โ
Edith just couldnโt bring herself to face it; she had been hurt too badly before.
Maisie could only sigh for her Brother. โHang in there, Daniel. The road to winning her over is a long one!โ
Meanwhile, Daniel arrived at Project Azureveil headquarters, only to find Giovanna already there.
His gaze shifted to Tuff, who looked downright miserable with a fresh scratch marking his handsome left cheek.
โDid Giovanna do that? Is there something going on between them?โ Daniel wondered.
His expression shifted slightly as he sized up the two of them. He just couldnโt picture them together.
โDonโt look at me like that, it was Paloma who did it,โ Giovanna said coldly.
Daniel let out a sigh of relief. โWell, thatโs a relief. You two really arenโt a good match.โ
โWhereโs Amelia?โ Giovanna ignored him and asked.
โSheโs at my place, sleeping,โ Daniel replied.
โWhat time is it? Itโs still so early.โ Giovannaโs eyes widened with sudden worry. โDid she get hurt?โ
Daniel kept her in suspense on purpose. โAfter staying with the Kyle family for so long, even if she doesnโt have any physical injuries, sheโs bound to have some psychological scars.โ
โIโll find her a therapist,โ Giovanna said immediately.
โNo need.โ Daniel waved her off. โSheโs just got a lot bottled up inside. Once she talks it out, sheโll feel better.โ
โThatโs exactly why she needs a therapist!โ Giovanna insisted.
โYouโre the one she needs right now,โ Daniel said.
Then he sat down and, with practiced ease, began brewing coffee using Tuffโs set.
โIโm not a therapist,โ Giovanna said.
As he poured the coffee, Daniel replied, โThe Hughes familyโs estate is her home too, at least here in Lunova.โ
Giovannaโs expression dimmed, and she stayed silent for a long while.
โSo, how exactly is the Hughes family planning to settle her?โ Daniel asked again.
โI really donโt know,โ Giovanna sighed. โMy parents and grandma still have no idea her last name is Zuckerberg.โ
Amelia had once been the most cherished and beautiful princess of the Hughes family, only to have her life ruined by the Zuckerbergs.
If her grandmother and parents ever found out that after faking her death and escaping from Lunova, she ended up having a child with the Zuckerbergs, they would absolutely lose it.
โGiovanna, donโt make her wait too long. Things arenโt looking good for her,โ Daniel warned.
Giovannaโs breath caught. โBut isnโt Landon still at the Kyle familyโs place?โ
โWith the way Landon is, as long as heโs still breathing, heโd find a way back to Amelia. But sheโs been living with the Kyle family for so long, and thereโs been no word from him at all. Alden was poisoned and forced to let Amelia return home. So why didnโt the Kyle family use Landon as leverage against her at that point?โ Daniel explained.
His analysis left Giovanna feeling restless and on edge.
The Kington Gang was a family business, and Aidenโs grandparents were the ones really calling the shots.
The whole Kyle Estate was crawling with their spies.
If Landon was still alive, there was no reason they wouldnโt play that card.
โCould it be that something bad has really happened to Landon?โ Giovanna wondered.
โNo wayโฆ that canโt be,โ she murmured.
The Hughes family had never just stood by and done nothing. She had always been keeping tabs on Ameliaโs situation.
As a woman herself, she knew all too well that Ameliaโs strength right now was all because she believed Landon would come back to her.
If that belief ever shattered, Amelia might not even be able to survive it.
โWe need to prepare for the worst,โ Daniel said in a low, serious voice.
Suddenly, Giovanna gave Tuff a kick. โCome on, itโs just a scratch from a woman! Why the long face? Spit it out already!โ
โIt was Kayla who scratched me,โ Tuff replied with a wry smile.
Daniel and Giovanna were both completely floored.
โHow can you be sure it was her?โ Daniel asked.
He hadnโt told anyone about that little secret yet.
โThe eyes.โ Tuff sighed. โI could never forget those eyes.โ
โNonsense! Kayla is a gentle lady now, sheโs nothing like the spy you first met,โ Giovanna snapped.
Daniel narrowed his eyes at Tuff, suspicion written all over his face. โHow exactly is he so sure that Paloma is actually Kayla?โ
โNo, her eyes were just as gentle back then,โ Tuff said, seeming to drift off into his memories, looking totally out of it. โBefore we wiped out all her comrades, she was gentleโฆโ
โEnough!โ Giovanna couldnโt stand it anymore and gave him another kick. โStop going on about the past, just figure out what to do now!โ
Tuffโs train of thought was abruptly cut off, so he shot Giovanna a resentful look. โFrankly, the wisest course of action is to bring Amelia back to the Hughes household. With both the Zuckerbergs and Hugheses protecting her, the Kington Gang wouldnโt dare act.โ
โDidnโt she have both families protecting her back then? Try something else!โ Giovanna rolled her eyes in exasperation.
โJust make sure she gets through the pregnancy safely. The responsibility of being a mom will keep her going. And if that doesnโt work, we can always have a hypnotherapist help her forget about Landon,โ Tuff said.
With that, he zoned out, lost in his own world, reminiscing about the past.
Danielโs mood was as heavy as storm clouds about to burst; one little poke, and all that emotion would come pouring out.
Giovanna looked just as close to unraveling.
