Chapter 251
โI agree,โ Amelia said.
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to push down the worry in her heart. โI have to stay calm,โ she told herself.
The chip was always a hidden dangerโjust look at Kayla, and youโd know.
For the past six months, no one really talked about the chip in her brain, but everyone was secretly worried about it.
Especially since Kaylaโs headaches were getting more and more frequentโit was truly heartbreaking.
By now, there was less than a month left of the six months the doctor had given herโฆ
โIโll go first,โ Kayla said, showing up at the door with some apple pie in her hands.
Amelia and Landon were both taken aback. โKayla?โ
โMy headaches are unbearable, so Iโm going first with the surgery,โ Kayla declared matter-of-factly.
To be honest, she just wanted to be the guinea pig.
Whether her surgery worked or not, it would help them figure things out for Landonโs surgery later.
If things turned out badly, Landon could always put off his surgery and wait for a better time.
Anyway, the chip isnโt really a big threat to him right now.
โKayla, the surgery is riskyโฆโ Amelia said.
โWhat isnโt risky? Having a baby is risky, but you all still did it, didnโt you?โ Kayla replied with a calm smile, totally unfazed. โJust do it my way, or weโre not doing it at all.โ
A few days later, Giovanna and Daniel returned, bringing along the Hughes familyโs medical team.
โAmelia, itโs me, your cousin,โ Giovanna called out, standing outside the operating room with an easy confidence as she greeted Amelia.
The white coat softened her aura a lot, but the fierce glint in her eyes reminded everyoneโshe wasnโt just a doctor, but also an assassin!
โIโฆโ Amelia stammered, suddenly feeling a wave of social anxiety and not knowing how to reply.
โBefore, there were some special reasons why we couldnโt acknowledge each other, but now we finally can,โ Giovanna said, opening her arms wide. โWhatโs wrong? Donโt you recognize me anymore?โ
โIโฆ I doโฆโ Amelia choked out, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ameliaโs throat felt tight, taking one hesitant step after another toward Giovanna.
Daniel stood beside Giovanna, grinning. โCome on, Amelia! Your familyโs never given up on you.โ
At last, Amelia threw herself into Giovannaโs arms. โCousinโฆโ
โYour grandmother and uncle miss you so much. Come with me to Lunova to see them,โ Giovanna said softly.
โOkay,โ Amelia replied quietly.
Landon had already told her everything, but even now, she couldnโt help feeling both excited and sad.
โMom, are you watching from heaven?โ Amelia thought. โThe Hughes family never gave up on us; it was just that life sometimes forced them to make tough choices. Mom, Iโll go back and be good to them for youโฆโ
โWe all love you so much. Iโm so glad you were strong enough to keep living well,โ Giovanna said, gently patting Ameliaโs back. โThank you for not blaming usโฆโ
โMy husband told me everythingโฆโ Amelia choked out, her voice thick with emotion. โI know youโve done so much for meโฆโ
Giovanna raised an eyebrow, giving Landon an approving look. โWhen we get back to Lunova, Iโll put in a good word for you.โ
Landon let out a laugh. โNo need, Iโll prove myself.โ
โThe old lady in my family isnโt easy to please,โ Giovanna said with a soft chuckle, letting go of Amelia. โAlright, Iโm heading into the operating room.โ
โCousin, youโฆ donโt stress yourself out,โ Amelia said hesitantly, carefully picking her words.
If it were any other doctor, she probably wouldโve said something like, โPlease, Iโm begging you.โ
But she knew Giovanna would give it her allโsaying that would only make her feel more pressure.
โMm!โ Giovanna turned and walked into the operating room.
Everyone waited anxiously outside.
Suddenly, someone noticed Tuff was missing.
โWhereโs Tuff?โ
โI donโt know, he was just here a second agoโฆโ Daniel replied.
He raised an eyebrow and said, โHe went in to be with Kayla during the surgery.โ
Everyone was stunned.
โKayla and Tuff have secretly promised to be together. If the surgery goes well, theyโll officially be a couple. Tuff went in to root for Kaylaโafter all, his whole future depends on her now,โ Daniel explained slowly.
Landon froze, then got angry. โWhen did this happen? How come I didnโt know?โ
Daniel just shrugged and covered his ears. โLike I said, it was a secret engagementโof course you couldnโt know.โ
โYeah, everyone knows now, so itโs basically official,โ Amelia said, nodding hard, her hands still clenched into fists on her knees.
โKayla finally found someone great for her! Iโm so happy for her!โ Amelia thought.
โBut sheโs in surgery right nowโฆ Iโm so nervous for her!โ she added to herself.
โI donโt approve,โ Landon huffed, clearly annoyed.
Daniel leaned over and whispered to Amelia, โHe probably feels like his precious cabbage is being stolen by a pig. Good thing you had a sonโif youโd had a daughter, her future son-in-law would be in for a world of trouble.โ
โTotally! I actually thought about that when I was pregnantโฆโ Amelia echoed with a laugh.
Outside the quiet operating room, the two of them were whisperingโnot exactly quietly.
Landon was speechless, lines practically forming on his forehead. โTuff has got some nerveโhow does he even have the guts to go after my sister?โ
โMaybe thatโs exactly why he wants to make it up to her with love?โ Amelia said, covering her mouth with a grin. โWhen I first met you, you were a total grump to me!โ
โUhโฆโ Landon was instantly at a loss for words.
He completely lost his bluster.
Back then, he was basically a vegetable, stuck in bed, and heโd been so grumpy with herโฆ
Thanks to Danielโs interruption, the mood in the waiting room lightened up a little.
Amelia even started making a note on her phone: โTransfer all of Momโs shares to Kayla, buy her a house and a carโฆโ
She pulled up a whole list on her phone and handed it to Landon. โThese are all the engagement gifts I could think of. See if I missed anything.โ
โHmph!โ Landon snorted.
He took the phone, muttering under his breath as he started scribbling on the list.
โThis oneโs out, and we donโt need that either. Letโs add another house! The Prescott familyโs in Lunova, so we should get Kayla a few storefronts thereโฆโ
Daniel watched the couple fuss over the list, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
Most of those nerve-wracking hours were spent working on the engagement gifts list.
Finally, the operating room door swung open.
โHow did it go?โ
Amelia and Landon rushed forward, anxiety written all over their faces.
โItโs a success!โ Giovanna said, pulling off her surgical mask and letting out a relieved smile.
โThatโs wonderful, thatโs wonderful!โ
Landon turned away, covering his face, his shoulders shaking with emotion.
โCousin, thank you so muchโฆโ Amelia choked out, wiping away her tears.
โWeโll schedule your husbandโs surgery for tomorrow,โ Giovanna said.
Amelia looked at her pale face and asked, โYou must be exhausted. Why donโt you rest for a few days before the next one?โ
โIโm fine, I can handle it,โ Giovanna said with a smile. โWesley Harrington, take Landon for his pre-op checkup.โ
Landon didnโt even have a chance to catch his breath before he was whisked away for the pre-surgery exam.
Meanwhile, in the operating room, Tuff never let go of Kaylaโs hand, staying right by her side as she waited for the anesthesia to wear offโฆ
The next day, Landon also went in for his surgery.
Because his chip had only been implanted for a short time and there hadnโt been any issues like loosening, the whole operation went even more smoothly.
Kaylaโs recovery took longer than Landonโs, and Tuff practically moved into her hospital room, taking care of her every need and never leaving her side.
Their secret promise to be together finally got the Kingsley familyโs blessing, and Gloria couldnโt be happierโshe threw herself into preparing the engagement gifts and the wedding for her daughter.
Giovanna stuck around in Norava for a while, staying until both Landon and Kayla had fully recovered from their surgeries.
Amelia was beyond grateful, and the two cousins grew closer than ever.
By the time she brought her husband and kids back to Lunova to officially reunite with her family, Ameliaโs heart was finally at peace.
It turned out that, aside from Walterโs family, everyone truly loved her.
It was all worth itโliving this life all over again wasnโt in vain.
