Chapter 268

Kayla and Landon exchanged glances. โ€œWhat did Tristan mean by that?โ€ Kayla wondered. โ€œWhereโ€™s Marvin?โ€ Tristan asked. โ€œHeโ€™s with Aunt Shelby,โ€ Landon replied. โ€œI just want to know the truth. I never meant to hurt them.โ€

Tristan nodded and let out a long sigh. Then, he sat down on the curb and started talking. โ€œThis whole messโ€ฆ itโ€™s all Shelbyโ€™s fault.โ€ Kayla and Landon both breathed a sigh of relief.

โ€˜So it was trueโ€”our father wasnโ€™t a scumbag after all,โ€™ both Kayla and Landon thought. โ€œShelby was infatuated with your father. Then, when your grandfather was celebrating his birthday that year, sheโ€ฆโ€ Tristanโ€™s voice trailed off. Whatever memory flashed through Tristanโ€™s mind made him shudder hard in the sunlight. Kayla and Landonโ€™s hearts leapt into their throats.

โ€œShe dressed up as your mother and tried to seduce Isaac. When she failed, she threatened him with Kaylaโ€™s whereaboutsโ€ฆโ€ Tristan continued. โ€˜So it really was true!โ€™ Kayla finally felt relieved. โ€˜Dad hadnโ€™t wanted to betray Mom. Heโ€™d just been forced into it.โ€™ But at the same time, she felt like crying. Her father, who had always been so proud and upright, had his reputation ruined in the endโ€”all for her sake.

โ€œIsaac was a real man. Iโ€ฆ I canโ€™t bring myself to hate him,โ€ Tristan sighed again. After laughing and crying, his face was a mess, streaked with tears and snot. Landon handed him a wet wipe. He wiped his face messily and went on, โ€œLandon, do you remember? Fourteen years ago, your father suddenly got really sick and was depressed for a long time.โ€ โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€ Landon said after thinking for a moment.

Back then, he had just joined the Flying Tiger Sect and was super busy, barely paying attention to what was going on at home. โ€œHe was eaten up with guilt and terrified your mother would find out the truth. But what really mattered was, Shelby was pregnant,โ€ Tristan said. โ€œSoโ€ฆ did my father ever know there was a child?โ€ Landon asked.

โ€œNo,โ€ Tristan shook his head. โ€œBecause I told him Shelby had a miscarriage. Actually, I wanted Shelby to lose the baby. She betrayed me, yet she still wanted to give birth to that child. But her health was so bad that forcing a miscarriage couldโ€™ve killed her. So I had no choice but to wait until the baby was born and take care of it myself. I strangled that child with my own handsโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSo how is he still alive?โ€ After saying all this, Tristan looked completely lost. Tristan continued, โ€œThis was the craziest thing Iโ€™ve ever done in my whole life. It haunted me every night, drove me half crazy. My bosses all thought I was sick and forced me into early retirement. How is he still alive?โ€ Tristan just couldnโ€™t wrap his head around it.

It was all clear to Landon. Marvin had saved the child and, together with Shelby, plotted to raise the baby in secret, away from everyone else. Marvin had sold Tristan out for money, too. โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ve told you everything,โ€ Tristan said with a long sigh. โ€œCan you let Marvin go now?โ€ โ€œSure,โ€ Landon nodded. โ€œTristan, heโ€™ll go home tonight.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Brian stood up and, swaying unsteadily, made his way along the road. His round, pudgy back looked especially lonely and desolate as he walked away. โ€œTristan really must love Aunt Shelbyโ€ฆโ€ Kayla sighed. Landon pressed his lips together, his gaze steely and intense.

From a manโ€™s point of view, most guys could never forgive their wife for cheating. But Tristan not only forgave Shelbyโ€”he even did everything he could to keep it a secret. If that wasnโ€™t love, then what was? โ€œLetโ€™s go. We should head back,โ€ Landon said.

Kayla asked, โ€œNow that things have turned out like this, what do we do about Mom?โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t tell her yet. Letโ€™s wait until sheโ€™s out of surgery and stable,โ€ Landon replied.

Chapter 268

At the hospital, Gloria woke up. When she saw Tuff and Amelia by her bedside, but neither Kayla nor Landon were there, she started to feel a bit anxious. โ€œWhat happened to me?โ€ โ€œYou had a bout of gastritis,โ€ Amelia said with a gentle smile, handing her a glass of water. โ€œGloria, take your medicine first.โ€

โ€œHow could gastritis make me throw up blood?โ€ Gloria asked, eyeing Amelia with suspicion. โ€œYouโ€™ve just been pushing yourself too hard. And you never really got over that cold from before, so it all piled up,โ€ Amelia said with a gentle smile. โ€œGloria, Landonโ€™s checked you in. This time, weโ€™ll make sure youโ€™re fully recovered before you go home.โ€

Gloria took the medicine and swallowed it before asking, โ€œWhere are Kayla and Landon?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s my fault for wearing Kayla out. I told her to go home and rest,โ€ Tuff said. Amelia added, โ€œThereโ€™s some work stuff Landon had to take care of at the company.โ€ It was a flawless lie, and Gloria bought it.

โ€œIf itโ€™s just gastritis, then letโ€™s just go home!โ€ Gloria said. Amelia hurried to hold her back. โ€œGloria, youโ€™re in the hospital!โ€ โ€œWhatโ€™s the big deal? I can just come back before the doctor does his rounds in the morning,โ€ Gloria said, totally unconcerned. โ€œThese days, lots of people do this if they live nearby and their condition isnโ€™t serious.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t just leave, Mrs. Kingsley!โ€ Wesley said with a grin as he walked in. โ€œWesley, is it really that serious?โ€ Gloria asked. Ameliaโ€™s heart skipped a beat. Wesley said, โ€œGastritis isnโ€™t something you want to mess around with. If you donโ€™t take care of it, itโ€™ll just get worse.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re just trying to scare me,โ€ Gloria said knowingly, flashing a smile. โ€œI canโ€™t stand hospitals. I just want to go home and cuddle my grandson. Iโ€™ll come back tomorrow.โ€ โ€œMrs. Kingsley, you really need to rest. Plus, there are still a few tests we havenโ€™t finished yet, so you canโ€™t be discharged,โ€ Wesley said gently.

โ€œBut didnโ€™t you already figure out whatโ€™s wrong with me?โ€ Gloria asked. โ€œWe did, but we still need to run some tests! Otherwise, how can we tell if youโ€™re actually getting better?โ€ Wesley replied patiently. Gloria had to admit that did make sense. She gave up and flopped back onto the hospital bed, grumbling, โ€œHonestly, you guys just love to make a fuss over nothing.โ€

โ€œMrs. Kingsley, itโ€™s all because they care about you! Just look at your daughter-in-law and son-in-lawโ€”arenโ€™t they the best?โ€ Wesley said with a grin. Gloria puffed up with pride. โ€œOf course! My daughter-in-law and son-in-law are top-notchโ€”couldnโ€™t find better if you searched the whole city.โ€

โ€œExactly! So donโ€™t waste their kindness. Otherwise, next time you get sick, they might just leave you to fend for yourself,โ€ Wesley teased. โ€œFine!โ€ Gloria finally relented. Wesleyโ€™s smooth talking finally got Gloria to stay put.

โ€œAlright, you can go home now. No need to stay here and keep me company,โ€ Gloria said. Amelia and Tuff exchanged a glance. Amelia said, โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll go home to look after the baby. Iโ€™ll have Brooke stay here to take care of you.โ€

โ€œPfft, what, is someone going to sneak into the hospital and try to assassinate me or something?โ€ Gloria joked. Amelia chuckled too. โ€œHey, thatโ€™s Landonโ€™s idea.โ€ โ€œAlright, Brooke can stay. The rest of you, go on,โ€ Gloria said. โ€œWeโ€™ll come back tomorrow then,โ€ Amelia said. โ€œGo on, go on!โ€ Gloria waved them off.

Amelia and Tuff left, and Wesley stayed in the room to keep Gloria company for a while before going off to handle his own business. Little did they know, someone really did come to Gloriaโ€™s hospital room to try and kill her!
