Chapter 270

The next morning, Tuff got up early to make breakfast for his beloved wife.

Kayla was getting ready in front of the mirror, staring at the hideous scar on her face. She finally considered having it fixed.

โ€œHoney, breakfast is ready,โ€ Tuff said with a smile as he walked in. He saw her gazing at herself in the mirror, then bent down and kissed her on the cheek. โ€œHoney, donโ€™t you think it looks like a flower?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€ Kayla was stunned.

โ€œItโ€™s a flower that blooms on your face, and in my heart too,โ€ Tuff said softly.

Kayla couldnโ€™t help but laugh and playfully pushed him away. โ€œYouโ€™re such a smooth talker!โ€

โ€œAm I too smooth for you?โ€ Tuff wrapped his arms around her and whispered in her ear.

Kaylaโ€™s cheeks flushed instantly. โ€œWhat are you saying so early in the morning? Donโ€™t you have any shame?โ€

โ€œI just canโ€™t love you enough!โ€ Tuff said.

Tuff gently caressed the scar on her face, and it felt like something stabbed right into his heart. It hurt so much that he could barely stand it.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Landen?โ€ Kayla asked.

โ€œHeโ€™s already at school,โ€ Tuff replied.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll freshen up and go visit my mom at the hospital,โ€ Kayla said.

She dabbed some concealer over the scar on her face and carefully did her makeup.

But no matter how good the concealer was or how flawless her makeup looked, it could never fully hide the scar.

โ€œI didnโ€™t expect Tristan to confess,โ€ Tuff said as he served her some food.

โ€œMe neither,โ€ Kayla replied. โ€œHe looked so pitiful.โ€

โ€œNow that youโ€™ve got the Gellar family under surveillance, you can finally be at ease,โ€ Tuff said.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Kayla replied.

She let out a long breath, feeling a weight lift off her chest.

Her momโ€™s sudden tumor diagnosis had made her let go of a lot.

โ€˜So what if I have a brother? It is what it is,โ€™ she thought to herself.

โ€˜Heโ€™s already grown upโ€“thereโ€™s no way to just send him back where he came from.

โ€˜Mom and Dad always lived such perfect lives. Maybe itโ€™s fine if thereโ€™s a little blemish now.

โ€˜Once Mom recovers, weโ€™ll finally have a real talk with her about Jeffrey!โ€™

After breakfast, just as Tuff and Kayla were about to head out, they opened the door, only to find an unexpected guest standing right outside.

โ€œMom?โ€ Tuff blurted out, completely stunned.

โ€˜What is she doing here?โ€™ he thought, utterly surprised.

It was his mom, Maggie Prescott, standing at the doorโ€“but she was supposed to have gone back to Lunova right after the wedding!

Slap! Without saying a word, Maggie just swung her hand and slapped him right across the face.

โ€œMaggie?โ€ Kayla gasped, instinctively stepping in front of Tuff to shield him.

โ€œWhat? Now that youโ€™re married, I canโ€™t even discipline my own son?โ€ Maggie shot Kayla a cold glare.

Maggie had her hair pulled up in a tight bun and wore glassesโ€“she had that classic air of someone from a scholarly family.

She was already upset that Tuff had married a divorced woman with a child from a previous marriage.

And then, to find out that this divorced woman also had a teenage son out of wedlock, and no one even knew who the father was. Well, that was just the last straw.

How was she supposed to swallow that? No way she could let it slide.

So she stormed over on a red-eye flight in the middle of the night.

โ€œMom, what are you doing?โ€ Tuff quickly pulled Kayla behind him.

โ€œGet divorced right now, you two!โ€ Maggie demanded.

Tuff and Kayla were both completely stunned.

Before they got married, theyโ€™d gotten both familiesโ€˜ approvalโ€“no one had any objections!

โ€œMom, did you have a little too much to drink?โ€ Tuff said with a laugh, trying to smooth things over. โ€œKayla and I just tied the knot a few days ago. Weโ€™re working hard on giving you a grandchild! Just go home and get ready to be a grandma!โ€

โ€œGrandchild? Hmph!โ€ Maggie grew even more furious, jabbing a finger at Kayla and snapping, โ€œDonโ€™t you have any shame? Is it that every time you latch onto a man, you just have to have his child?โ€

Kayla was left dumbfounded by the scolding. โ€œMaggie, what do you mean by that?โ€

โ€œDrop the act! Iโ€™d never accept a daughterโ€“inโ€“law as shameless as you!โ€ Maggie shouted. โ€œTuff, divorce this woman right now!โ€

โ€˜Sheโ€™s really serious about thisโ€ฆโ€™ Kayla thought, her expression darkening.

Kayla tried to reason with her. โ€œYou knew I had a child before we got married. Isnโ€™t it ridiculous to use that as an excuse now?โ€

โ€œYou never said you had two kids!โ€ Maggie was so furious that her breath was shaking. โ€œIf Iโ€™d known at the wedding that boy was your illegitimate child, I wouldโ€™ve stopped you right then and there!โ€

Kayla and Tuff suddenly realized what was going on.

It turned out the Prescott family thought Jeffrey was Kaylaโ€™s illegitimate child.

Tuff let out a laugh. โ€œMom, itโ€™s just a misunderstanding.โ€

โ€œA misunderstanding? That kidโ€™s already that big, and he even made a scene at the wedding! You call that a misunderstanding?โ€ Maggie was so mad that she couldnโ€™t help but kick Tuff twice, and even that didnโ€™t make her feel any better.

She was absolutely fuming. โ€˜Fine, I could live with Landen. Heโ€™s smart, adorable, and the only legitimate grandson of the Kyle family. That kidโ€™s got a limitless future ahead of him.

โ€˜But now, out of nowhere, thereโ€™s this thirteen-year-old boy who looks totally expressionless, like a robot - just looking at him gives me the creeps.

โ€˜And of all things, my son isnโ€™t even embarrassedโ€“heโ€™s actually proud of this mess!โ€™

โ€œMom, it really is just a misunderstanding. Why donโ€™t you head back to Lunova first? In a few days, weโ€™ll come to Lunova and explain everything to you,โ€ Tuff said.

โ€œWait, why are you suddenly suspicious about that kid?โ€ Kayla asked, suddenly on alert.

Maggie let out a cold laugh. โ€œSecrets always come out. If you didnโ€™t want people to know, you shouldnโ€™t have done it.โ€

โ€œYeah, Mom, why are you suddenly bringing up Jeffrey?โ€ Tuff also sensed something was off.

โ€˜Even though the Kingsley family had a reputation for having illegitimate children, no one had ever directly pointed the finger at Kayla.

โ€˜How did Mom suddenly become so sure that Jeffrey was Kaylaโ€™s child?โ€™ Tuff wondered.

โ€œTuff, if you donโ€™t want to make me die of anger, get divorced right now! Or, orโ€ฆโ€ Maggie threatened, her voice trembling with rage.

โ€œOr what?โ€ Kayla interrupted her coldly.

โ€˜Iโ€™ve heard threats like this more times than I can count,โ€™ Kayla thought, unfazed. โ€˜I know exactly how to deal with them.โ€™

Maggie never even considered that Tuff might not listen to her, so she didnโ€™t have any backup plan at all.

When Kayla pressed her, she hesitated for a few seconds, then stomped her foot and yelled, โ€œOr, Iโ€™ll just die!โ€

โ€œMom, please donโ€™t do anything rash,โ€ Tuff said, clearly panicked.

Maggie looked triumphant. โ€œTuff, youโ€™re my only son. Everything I do is for your own good! You need to listen to me!โ€

Kayla rolled her eyes, completely exasperated.

Tuff felt like a sandwich filling, stuck between the two women. He looked from one to the other, nerves on edge, but he still couldnโ€™t let the real story slip.

โ€œMom, listen to meโ€ฆโ€ Tuff pleaded.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to hear it! I just want you to get divorced!โ€ Maggie shouted, cutting him off.

Just when Tuff looked like he was about to cry from sheer frustration, Kayla suddenly announced, โ€œIโ€™m pregnant.โ€

Tuff was stunned.

Maggie was speechless.

In that instant, everyoneโ€™s eyes zeroed in on Kaylaโ€™s belly.

โ€œTuff, is it true?โ€ Maggie asked, her hand trembling as she reached out to grab his arm.

Tuff braced himself and managed to say, โ€œYesโ€ฆโ€

All the bluster drained out of Maggie in an instant.

She slumped back against the wall, looking utterly defeated, unable to say a word for a long moment.

โ€œMom, please calm downโ€ฆ Why donโ€™t you come inside and sit down?โ€ Tuff quickly ushered his mom into the house.

Kayla strutted into the elevator in her high heels, her proud look barely hiding her smug satisfaction.

โ€˜Nice try, but youโ€™re no match for me!โ€™ she thought to herself.

After getting to the underground parking lot, Kayla sat in her car, put on some music, and waited for a while.

Soon enough, Tuff came down to the garage.

โ€œHoney, you really are clever! You had Mom completely under control with just one move,โ€ Tuff said, finally letting out a long breath of relief.

He knew that elders always cared about their grandchildren. No matter how mad his mom got, sheโ€™d always soften when it came to a grandchild.

So then, the familyโ€™s attitude was: they should wait until the baby was born before getting divorced.

Tuff agreed to it.

The thing was, the truth would come out way before the baby ever arrived.

By then, all the misunderstandings would be gone!

โ€œSomeoneโ€™s definitely been running their mouth to your mom,โ€ Kayla said, admiring her nails with absolute certainty.

Tuff looked a little awkward. โ€œUh, I asked. It was Joyce. She didnโ€™t know what was really going on and just got the wrong idea about you.โ€

โ€œOh, so it was her?โ€ Kayla said with a sly, meaningful smile. โ€œJoyce really does love meddling in other peopleโ€™s business, doesnโ€™t she?โ€

โ€œAhem, sheโ€™s just young and clueless. Iโ€™ll have a word with her later,โ€ Tuff said, reaching for Kaylaโ€™s hand. โ€œHoney, just promise me you wonโ€™t do anything rash, okay?โ€

โ€œWhat? Worried I might do something to your dear Joyce?โ€ Kayla pulled her hand back, and there was a dangerous glint in her eyes you couldnโ€™t miss.

Tuff thought, โ€˜Uhโ€“oh, this is bad.

โ€˜Seriously, Joyce, why did you have to go stirring up trouble behind her back?

โ€˜Kayla is not someone you want to mess with!โ€™
