Chapter 285
The real-time surveillance feed clearly displayed Marvin’s route. Amelia sat on the living room sofa, coaxing Kimsey while watching the monitor.
“Mrs. Kingsley, should we take precautions?” Aaron asked cautiously.
Pinecrest was a sensitive place for Amelia. Walter had once threatened to dig up Catherine’s grave. There was no guarantee that Joanna wouldn’t pull the same stunt again. But taking precautions in advance might alert the enemy.
“No need,” Amelia said calmly. “Gloria’s condition can’t wait. The living matter more than the dead, don’t they?”
“Yes, ma’am.” Aaron swallowed hard, feeling sad as he gazed out the floor-to-ceiling window.
Amelia said, “If Joanna chose this moment to stir up trouble, it’s definitely aimed at Landon. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have let me off so easily.”
“Mrs. Kingsley, you’re really smart and level-headed,” Aaron commented.
“Of all the places, she came to Pinecrest. There are only two possibilities: either the Mystic Sect has a base there, or she’s trying to threaten me. Honestly, I hope it’s the former one,” Amelia said.
That way, they could strike directly at the Mystic Sect and ease the pressure on Landon.
“Mrs. Kingsley, Mr. Renshaw is still on the case. The Flying Tiger backup team will arrive soon. You don’t need to worry,” Aaron reassured her.
“Hmm.” Amelia nodded. She wasn’t worried about Joanna since that woman wasn’t really a threat, but then again….
“Mrs. Kingsley, Mr. and Ms. Zuckerberg are here,” Aaron said.
Amelia frowned and let out a sigh, turning to Aaron. “See? That’s exactly what I was worried about.”
“Being loved by your family is a blessing,” Aaron said with a smile and tactfully stepped away.
Daniel and Maisie came rushing in.
Daniel asked, “Amy, are you and Kimsey alright?”
“We’re fine, really.” Amelia forced a smile. “You guys don’t need to travel all the way here.”
“Something this serious? Of course, we had to.” Daniel picked up Kimsey and checked him over carefully.
Maisie took Amelia’s hand and looked her up and down. “You saw my mom, didn’t you? Did she hurt you?”
“She only came to save Marvin,” Amelia said, giving Maisie a quick once-over.
Maisie looked deeply worried. Her brows had been furrowed since hearing Joanna was back.
“I’m sorry, she…” Maisie started.
Amelia cut her off, “It’s not your fault.”
Maisie lowered her eyes, troubled. Amelia tried to comfort her. “I’ve thought about it. As long as she doesn’t go too far, I won’t take her life.”
“Thank you.” Maisie let out a quiet sigh of relief.
No matter what, Joanna was still the one who gave her life and raised her. She couldn’t watch her die.
After the Kington Gang was wiped out, Maisie had assumed Joanna was living abroad, so she never looked into it further.
She hadn’t expected her mom to not only return with vengeance but also have deep ties to the Mystic Sect.
Maisie couldn’t shake the feeling that this was far from over.
Daniel said, “Alright, as long as you’re both okay. Mais, come sit down and take a rest.”
Maisie did as she was told and sat down.
Then Daniel turned to Amelia and asked, “So, are you going to tell us what’s going on now?”
“Huh? What do you mean?” Amelia asked, playing dumb.
“Why isn’t Landon here? And Joanna shows up at this exact moment. Something big must be going on,” Daniel pressed.
Amelia was amazed by Daniel’s sharp instinct.
“Come on, Amelia, tell us,” Daniel urged.
“Okay,” Amelia replied.
Amelia decided not to hide it anymore. She told them about how Gloria had been poisoned, the Gellar family, and Landon’s true background.
After hearing everything, Daniel and Maisie both fell silent.
‘Why does every wealthy family have skeletons in their closet? The older generation created a mess, and now it’s up to us to clean it up!’ Maisie thought.
“Daniel, you need to stay on the right path and behave yourself in the future,” Maisie said earnestly.
Daniel glared at her. “You too! When you get married, keep your husband in check as well.”
Amelia wondered, ‘Is it my turn to get lectured next?’
“And you too, Amelia!” Daniel and Maisie said in unison.
Amelia nodded and gave them a half-hearted smile.
“The Kingsley family is pretty complicated. You need to watch over Landon. Trust when you should. But if something doesn’t feel right, don’t hold back,” Daniel said seriously.
“Got it,” Amelia sighed. “Landon wouldn’t do anything like that, so don’t worry. By the way, why didn’t Edith come with you?”
An awkward silence fell over the room.
Amelia glanced at them, asking carefully, “Did you guys have a fight or something?”
“No,” Daniel replied uncomfortably. “Edith is pregnant. She’s resting at home.”
“Wow, that’s amazing!” Amelia exclaimed, clearly thrilled. “I’m going to be an aunt!”
Maisie rolled her eyes and said nothing.
The truth was, Edith wasn’t at home at all. She had run off with the bun still in the oven.
Maybe it was just in some men’s nature to act out until they faced a good dose of heartbreak and regret.
In Dreicean, Landon briefly explained what had happened back home.
Aiden was furious. “They actually targeted a child? Are they even human?”
“Probably not,” Tuff said sarcastically. “Shelby and her son stopped acting like humans a long time ago. It seems like the so-called Mystic Sect only produces monsters.”
“Amelia is really smart and brave,” Kayla said, shooting a worried look at Aiden.
All this time had passed, and Aiden still hadn’t gotten over Amelia.
“But this time…” There was a stubborn resolve in Aiden’s eyes as he said, “Landon, you need to get back home now.”
Landon nodded. “Once I’ve dealt with the Mystic Sect, I’ll go back.”
“You’re no match for my uncle,” Aiden said. “Sometimes you have to let one go to save the whole family.”
Everyone from the Kingsley family froze.
No way they’d ever abandon their own mother. That was simply unthinkable.
Just then, Landon’s phone buzzed.
After reading the message, he smiled. “My helper has arrived.”
“Who’s it?” Aiden asked.
Landon replied, “Night Owl.”
Kayla turned to Tuff. “Night… what?”
“Ahem, Night Owl, the bird that hoots,” Tuff said awkwardly.
Kayla narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “A man or a woman?”
“A woman,” Tuff replied.
“Did you two have a thing?” Kayla asked.
“Of course not!” Tuff jumped to his feet, casting a quick glance at Landon.
Kayla narrowed her eyes thoughtfully. ‘Wait, could it be that she and Landon had history?’
“Let’s go. Time to move!” Landon called, bringing the conversation to an end.
