Chapter 300
Time ticked by, and Aiden didnโt dare to leave. After all, the Montgomery family and the Kyle family were related, so Monroeโs men didnโt dare lay a finger on him. When Bill came out of the operating room, he even greeted Aiden respectfully. โMr. Kyle.โ
โHow is he?โ Aiden glanced into the operating room but didnโt see Night Owl. โWhere did she go?โ Aiden wondered. โWas she killed by Monroe after her secret was exposed?โ
โThe surgery was a success. Heโll wake up once the anesthesia wears off,โ Bill replied.
โGood!โ Aiden breathed a sigh of relief. โGo back and thank Uncle Monroe for me.โ
Bill blinked in confusion. โHuh?โ
โWith Landon losing his memory, I finally have a chance to win Amelia over,โ Aiden leaned in and whispered, a devilish glint in his eyes. Bill had heard the rumors about Aidenโs romantic entanglements. He smiled knowingly and returned to the operating room to wait for Landon to wake up.
As the operating room door closed again, the devilish glint on Aidenโs face faded away, and his heart twisted with anxiety. โWhere did Night Owl go?โ Aiden fretted inwardly.
โWho are you worried about?โ Kayla walked over and asked.
Aiden lowered his gaze, not sure how to explain. โShould I say Iโm worried about Night Owl?โ he thought to himself. โDo I even have the right to worry about her?โ Aiden couldnโt help but wonder.
โNight Owlโs a good one. If you like her, just go for it!โ Kayla said with a gentle smile. She was as warm as ever. Aiden suddenly felt his nose sting, emotion welling up inside him. Kayla was the only person in this world who had ever given him warmth and love. And she understood him better than anyone else. But heโd hurt her loved ones so much beforeโฆ
โNo oneโs beyond redemption. Donโt be scared,โ Kayla said, patting his shoulder. โLook at you, youโve grown so tallโI have to stand on my tiptoes just to reach your shoulder now.โ
โKaylaโฆโ Aiden murmured.
โLet me be upfront with you,โ Kayla said. โNight Owl was married before, and that man still lives in her heart.โ
Aiden felt nothing at all; his heart was completely calm. He wasnโt stupid enough to compete with someone whoโs already gone. The living could never win against the dead. To Night Owl, Dawson would always be her one true love, the unforgettable mark on her heart. No one could ever take his place. All Aiden wanted was for her to be happy and healthy.
โKayla, I donโt have any bad intentions,โ Aiden said, trying to explain. Watching Amelia and Landon struggle through their tough lives made him realize just what a bastard he used to be. He really hated the person he used to be.
Kayla just patted his shoulder again. โBe brave and go after love! Amelia is a mistake thatโs behind youโyou need to find whatโs truly right for you now.โ
Aiden stood there, dazed, his mind clouded with confusion. For the first time in his life, he felt lost. โIs Night Owl really whatโs right for me now?โ
Just then, the doors to the operating room swung open again. Bill came out with his assistants, and Landon was lying on a hospital bed, eyes wide open, looking totally lost.
โMr. Kyle, itโs time for us to head back,โ Bill said.
Aiden snapped out of his thoughts and asked, โWhen are you going to let Amelia come back?โ
โWeโll release the two kids first, and then Amelia,โ Bill replied. Worried that Aiden might get angry, Bill quickly added, โMr. Montgomery is just afraid you guys wonโt let him leave the country, soโฆโ
โI get it. Just donโt hurt her,โ Aiden said, waving his hand to let them go. Bill nodded respectfully again before leading Landon away.
Landon lay on the stretcher as if he was completely numb, but inside, he was bursting with joy. โHoney, weโll see each other soonโฆโ Landon thought to himself.
Aiden watched the group walk away, his heart a whirlwind of emotions. No one in this world could ever love Amelia the way Landon did. Luckily, all his schemes back then had flopped, and he hadnโt managed to break them up. Just then, a janitor was pushing a giant trash bin past, and Aiden suddenly caught a familiar scent. He quickly reached out to stop the person.
โWait!โ
โAiden!โ Kayla shot him a warning look.
Aiden grinned and pulled his hand back.
โNight Owlโs gotta be hiding in that trash bin! Haha, sheโs still alive!โ Aiden thought to himself.
At the foot of the mountain, Amelia was playing a game with Landen. Kimsey was still too young to join in, but he could watch. He sat there, sucking on his thumb, watching his mother and Landen play, babbling and waving his little arms excitedly.
Just then, Monroe walked in and said, โAmelia, do you want to leave first, or should the kids go first?โ
โDid you guys get Landon?โ Ameliaโs heart skipped a beat, and the forced smile on her face disappeared.
โHe really didnโt hold back when it came to saving you,โ Monroe said, feeling a bit resentful. If only heโd shown that kind of devotion to his daughter.
โLet the kids go first,โ Amelia said, taking a deep breath. Her top priority was the kidsโ safety. And besides, if she stayed, maybe sheโd get a chance to see Landon one last time. Even if he didnโt remember her, she still wanted to see him, to hold him in her arms. โI just want to hear what his heart has to sayโฆโ Amelia thought to herself.
โAlright,โ Monroe replied. He quickly had someone take the kids away. โLanden, I kept my promise and didnโt hurt you guys, right? Look after your little brother, okay?โ
โOkay, thank you, Great-Uncle,โ Landen said sweetly, wrapping his little arms tightly around Kimsey.
Monroe smiled and ruffled his hair. โYouโre such a good kid! And so adorable!โ
โBye, Great-Uncle!โ Landen called out.
Landen struggled to lift Kimsey into the car, and then the driver floored the gas pedal, speeding off in a cloud of dust. Amelia stood by the sealed window, watching as the car disappeared in a swirl of dust, her heart heavy with worry and hope. โThe kids are safe nowโฆ Landon, are you alright?โ Amelia thought anxiously.
A car pulled up not long after. On the outside, it looked completely ordinary, but inside, it was fully equipped like a top-tier ambulance. Monroe turned to Amelia and said, โGet in! Iโm giving you a chance to see him again.โ
โLandonโฆโ Amelia called out, her voice full of longing. She scrambled into the car, barely able to wait. Landon was lying there on a hospital bed, his head wrapped in bandages. There were faint traces of blood soaking through the bandages. It was clear proof heโd just had minimally invasive brain surgery.
โLandonโฆโ Ameliaโs tears streamed down her face, falling one after another as she choked up, unable to control her sobs. Landon slowly turned his head to look at her, his eyes utterly blank, showing not a single ripple of emotion.
Monroe was very satisfiedโthe surgery was a success, and Landon had amnesia once again.
โLandonโฆโ Amelia covered her mouth, reminding herself not to cry. He ended up like this all because of her. But she just couldnโt help it. โLandon, what are we going to do now?โ Amelia thought, her heart shattering.
โDonโt cry.โ
A familiar voice suddenly rang out.
