Chapter 308

โ€œWhatโ€™s got them all worked up?โ€ Kayla asked in surprise.

โ€œLooks like Danielโ€™s wife is in some trouble,โ€ Tuff said casually, sipping his coffee as he leaned against the floor-to-ceiling window.

He just loved watching those classic โ€œhusband-chasing hellโ€ dramas unfold!

โ€œYouโ€™re actually happy about someone elseโ€™s wife being in trouble?โ€ Kayla snapped, kicking at him in annoyance.

Tuff shot her a mischievous wink, catching her leg between his own with a quick move.

โ€œHoney, pretty snug, huh?โ€ he teased.

โ€œYouโ€”shameless! Let go!โ€ Kayla snapped.

Her face flushed bright red.

Tuff released her leg, grinning. โ€œSo, Honey, what do you want with Daniel?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s about Landon,โ€ Kayla said, getting back to business. โ€œHe met with Amyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œPfft!โ€ Tuff spat out his coffee.

Kayla shot him a deadly glare, wrinkling her brow in disgust. โ€œUgh, you got it all over me!โ€

โ€œSorry, sorryโ€ฆโ€ Tuff blurted, scrambling for a wet wipe.

He hurried to wipe her face clean.

Aiden watched the two of them flirting and bickering, and he couldnโ€™t help but feel a wave of envy.

โ€œHoney, you still havenโ€™t said when Amy went to Dreicean,โ€ Tuff said, trying to steer the conversation back on track.

โ€œShe got there today. Sheโ€™s already met with Landon,โ€ Kayla replied.

โ€œAmyโ€™s got some serious guts!โ€ Tuff exclaimed.

He smacked his lips in disbelief.

โ€˜She just got kidnapped a few days ago, and now sheโ€™s already throwing herself back into the lionโ€™s den. Does she have nerves of steel or what?

โ€˜Too bad sheโ€™s the fragile typeโ€”not exactly someone who can handle herself in a fight,โ€™ Tuff thought.

โ€œSheโ€™s with Night Owl and a few others. Sheโ€™s safe for now,โ€ Kayla said.

โ€œSo, do we need to go over there and help?โ€ Tuff let out a long breath.

โ€œNo. We donโ€™t want to make the Montgomery family suspicious,โ€ Kayla replied. โ€œIโ€™ve been making hospital runs these daysโ€”Iโ€™ll just say everyone thinks Amyโ€™s been sick from the shock.โ€

โ€œI can head back to Dreicean,โ€ Aiden suggested in a low voice.

โ€œAiden, you just want to see Night Owl, huh?โ€ Kayla grinned, teasing.

โ€œNo!โ€ Aiden shot back, shaking his head. โ€œMy homeโ€™s over there, so it totally makes sense for me to go back. Honestly, staying here any longer would just be weird.โ€

โ€œWhen someone wants to leave, theyโ€™ll always find a hundred excuses,โ€ Tuff waved his hand. โ€œPermission granted!โ€

Aiden lit up and immediately started booking his flight.

Kayla, still uneasy about Daniel, gave him a call. โ€œDo you need any help?โ€

โ€œNo, I can handle it. Just keep an eye on Amy for now,โ€ Daniel replied, his voice tight as the wind whipped past him.

He gripped the motorcycle handlebars with both hands. As soon as the Bluetooth call ended, he single-mindedly twisted the throttle, speeding up.

Edith was right there in Pinecrestโ€”and she was pregnant!

โ€˜Holy crap, Iโ€™m going to be a dad!โ€™ Daniel thought, his mind reeling.

Maisie was right behind him in her car, but once she realized she couldnโ€™t catch up, she gave up.

She slowed down and called Joanna. โ€œMom, Edithโ€™s in the hospital. Can you go check on her?โ€

โ€œEdith?โ€ Joanna was stunned. โ€œWhat happened to her?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure. They just said she fell,โ€ Maisie replied.

โ€œWhat? How could a pregnant woman fall?โ€ Joanna exclaimed.

โ€œSo, Mom, can you go check on her? If it feels awkward, just take a discreet look,โ€ Maisie suggested.

โ€œAlright,โ€ Joanna nodded.

She agreed right away, without a momentโ€™s hesitation.

Maisie couldnโ€™t help but feel a little sad.

โ€˜See? In Momโ€™s heart, Edith is more like her real daughter. The moment something happens to Edith, she doesnโ€™t even care if she gets found out!โ€™ Maisie complained inwardly.

โ€˜Good thing Momโ€™s still in Pinecrest.โ€™

โ€˜Hope Edith and her baby are both fine. If anything happens, Danielโ€™s going to be heartbroken,โ€™ she thought.

At the Pinecrest Womenโ€™s and Childrenโ€™s Hospital, Edith lay in bed, gazing gratefully at the boy whoโ€™d brought her in.

โ€œThank you for getting me to the hospital,โ€ she said sincerely to the boy.

โ€œDonโ€™t mention it. Your family should be here any minute now,โ€ the boy replied.

Edith froze, her face paling. โ€œWโ€“who did you call?โ€

โ€œThe first family member listed in your phone,โ€ the boy said.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Edith blurted.

She was completely stunned.

โ€œWait, my first emergency contact is Danielโ€ฆโ€

โ€˜Oh no, how could he be the one to be called?โ€™ Edith thought, her heart racing.

โ€œWhatโ€ฆwhat exactly did you tell him?โ€ she stammered.

โ€œI told him you fell, and that itโ€™s really dangerous for a pregnant woman to have low blood sugar,โ€ the boy replied.

Hearing this, Edith felt completelyโ€ฆ

โ€˜Crap, now Danielโ€™s going to know Iโ€™m pregnant with his baby!โ€™ she panicked.

Luckily, Daniel was all the way in Lunovaโ€”even with a private jet, itโ€™d take him six or seven hours to get to Pinecrest.

โ€˜Thereโ€™s still time for me to make a run for it!โ€™ Edith thought, her heart pounding.

โ€œHey, thank you so much. Whatโ€™s your name?โ€ Edith asked as she started to get up.

โ€œLennon,โ€ the boy said.

โ€˜Lennon? Thatโ€™s a pretty special name.

โ€˜Did his parents maybe fancy some big celebrity or something?โ€™ Edith thought.

โ€˜When my babyโ€™s born, maybe Iโ€™d name it Luckystarโ€”may everything go their way,โ€™ she figured.

โ€œLennon, hereโ€™s some cash for the cab and the hospital bill. Seriously, thank you so much for today,โ€ Edith said, pulling out five hundred dollars for Lennon.

But Lennon just waved it off, shaking his head.

โ€œIt really didnโ€™t cost that much, and honestly, I never thought about money when I helped you,โ€ he replied.

โ€œPfft, youโ€™re way too nice! But if you keep helping people for free, your walletโ€™s gonna be crying. Come on, just take it!โ€ Edith insisted.

โ€œMy master told me to do some good and earn some merit! Since youโ€™re alright now, Iโ€™ll get going,โ€ Lennon said, giving her a casual wave.

He waved goodbye and left without looking back.

โ€œWhat an honest kid,โ€ Edith shook her head with a smile.

Then she went to handle her discharge.

But as soon as she got out of bed, she felt dizzy and had to grab onto the bedside table for support.

โ€œMiss Meyers, you canโ€™t get out of bed,โ€ the nurse said as she came in to hang an IV. โ€œYour blood sugar is way too lowโ€”itโ€™s really dangerous.โ€

โ€œOh, I guess I just havenโ€™t had much of an appetite these past couple of days,โ€ Edith said. โ€œIs there some kind of super-fast IV you can give me?โ€

โ€œNope,โ€ the nurse replied, rolling her eyes.

โ€œYour body needs time to recoverโ€”thereโ€™s no magic drip for that. Lie down, now,โ€ the nurse said.

Edith glanced at the IV bag. Looks like itโ€™ll take about three hours for this drip to finish up, she thought.

โ€œWell, whatever. Iโ€™ve still got six hoursโ€”plenty of time to get out of here after the IVโ€™s done,โ€ she told herself.

โ€œWith your condition, you really should be on bed rest as much as possible while youโ€™re pregnant. No more running around,โ€ the nurse said sternly.

โ€œBut nurse, itโ€™s just low blood sugar. Itโ€™s not that serious, right?โ€ Edith asked, trying to sound casual.

โ€œJust low blood sugar? You seriously donโ€™t know you have a uterine defect?โ€ The nurse stared at her in disbelief.

โ€œWโ€“what kind of defect?โ€ Edith froze, instinctively reaching for her belly.

โ€œDidnโ€™t you ever get a prenatal checkup?โ€ the nurse asked, frowning.

โ€œNoโ€ฆโ€ Edith mumbled, her voice barely above a whisper, anxiety twisting in her gut.

โ€œYou have a little fibroid in your uterus. It wonโ€™t affect the babyโ€™s growth, but it does put you at risk for miscarriageโ€ฆโ€ the nurse explained.

But Edith didnโ€™t catch another word the nurse said. Her ears buzzed, and her heart was stuck in her throat.

โ€˜A fibroid? I could lose the baby? Why is this happening to me?โ€™ she thought, panic flooding her mind.

Sheโ€™d already lost loveโ€”this baby was all she had left. Losing this baby was simply not an option.

โ€œPlease, you have to help meโ€ฆโ€ Edith begged, her voice shaking with desperation.

โ€œWhoa, donโ€™t get so worked up. Iโ€™m already helping you, arenโ€™t I?โ€ the nurse said, trying to calm her down.

โ€œFine, fine, I wonโ€™t freak out,โ€ Edith replied.

She forced herself to steady her breathing, telling herself to chill out and not lose it.

โ€œHonestly, this kind of thing pops up every now and then. Just focus on resting and keeping the baby safe. When itโ€™s time to deliver, weโ€™ll take out the fibroid, tooโ€”piece of cake,โ€ the nurse said, trying to reassure her.

โ€œIs it really that simple?โ€ Edith asked, her voice trembling.

โ€œYeah, but your blood sugarโ€™s way too low. If you take another tumbleโ€ฆโ€ the nurse warned.

โ€œI swear I wonโ€™t fall again!โ€ Edith promised, practically vowing on the spot.

โ€œYou young people always make it sound so simple. Trust me, when you get dizzy, itโ€™s not like you can just tough it out,โ€ the nurse couldnโ€™t help but laugh.

โ€œIโ€“Iโ€™ll try to eat moreโ€ฆโ€ Edith mumbled, a little embarrassed.

โ€œYour early pregnancy symptoms are pretty intense. Itโ€™s better if you stay in the hospital for observation,โ€ the nurse sugge-

Edith wanted to stay for the babyโ€™s health, but what if Daniel came looking for her?
