Chapter 350
โEverythingโs fineโฆโ Amelia said, her face lighting up as she put her phone down. She snuggled into Landonโs arms, grinning. โHoney, Kaylaโs home, and sheโs doing great.โ
โGood,โ Landon replied, feeling a wave of relief wash over him. He tightened his embrace around her. โHow about we give Kimsey a little sister?โ
โNo way,โ Amelia shot back without a second thought.
โWhy?โ Landon asked, a hint of curiosity in his voice.
โI want some peace for a while,โ Amelia said, resting her head on his chest, listening to his steady heartbeat.
โMom can help out, and we could always get a baby nurse,โ Landon suggested.
โItโs still a hassle. And being pregnant isnโt exactly a walk in the park. Iโm not up for it right now,โ Amelia replied.
โAlright, whatever you say. Weโll wait until you feel like it,โ Landon said, giving her a reassuring squeeze.
โGood.โ
Deep down, Amelia loved kids and had even thought about giving Kimsey a little brother or sister. But everything that happened with the Mystic Sect wore her out. Now she craved quiet more than ever.
โHoney, when are we going to Lunova?โ Amelia asked.
Landon knitted his brows in frustration.
Amelia, not noticing his mood, went on, โMy brother wants me to go back for my birthday. He wants to celebrate it for me.โ
โThen, letโs just go early,โ Landon replied.
โGuess thereโs no way around it,โ Landon thought with a silent sigh.
Ameliaโs birthday was two days before Daniel and Edithโs wedding day. Landon was hoping to stall as long as he could, thinking maybe his resignation would finally be approved.
However, it looked like his resignation wasnโt getting approved after all. He was getting worried.
โWhy are you always making things difficult for me, Mr. Mitchell?โ Landon grumbled inwardly.
The next day arrived, and it was Bettyโs birthday.
The house was buzzing with activity early in the morning. Kayla got up to get ready, but her stomach started to ache again.
โHoney, my aunts and uncles are back,โ Tuff said, bursting into the room with a big grin.
โOkay. Iโll be right there,โ Kayla replied, popping two painkillers before changing and heading out.
The second and third branches of the Prescott family had all come back, each bringing their kids along.
And every single one of those kids was a girl.
Theyโd all gone to Norava for the wedding, but that day was such a whirlwind. Then Jeffrey suddenly showed up, so Kayla never got a chance to meet them properly.
She had to officially meet them today.
โHello, Terrell, Lily, Maverick, and Diane,โ Kayla greeted them with a warm smile.
Following Maggieโs advice, Kayla covered up the scars on her face today. Without those marks, she was breathtakingly beautiful, enough to make anyone do a double-take.
However, it had been ages since sheโd worn a prosthetic mask, and her skin felt hot and a little suffocated underneath.
โKayla, did your face heal up?โ Lizbeth, the eldest daughter of the second branch, asked curiously.
Everyone immediately turned their eyes to Kayla.
Kayla smiled and said, โNot yet. There are many guests today. Iโm afraid to scare the children, so I did a little cover-up.โ
โOh! But you look gorgeous today, Kayla. Ever thought about getting some work done?โ Samantha, Lizbethโs younger sister, leaned in, her eyes sparkling.
Both girls were gorgeous and super sweet.
Kayla nodded. โIโm already working on it.โ
โAwesome! You will soon be the most beautiful sister-in-law in all of Lunova,โ Lizbeth said, grinning from ear to ear.
Lily chimed in, โKayla, Tuffโs the only boy in this generation of the Prescott family, so youโre our one and only sister-in-law. The girls adore you.โ
โThank you!โ Kayla said, her face showing genuine emotion, though her heart stayed guarded deep down.
With everything sheโd been through, she never hoped the Prescott family would ever truly accept her.
โItโs rare for sisters-in-law to get along. Look at the way Cynthia treated Mom, enough said,โ thought Kayla.
โKayla, I like you, too,โ another voice piped up.
Two more girls arrived a bit late. They were Alina and Zara Prescott from the third branch of the Prescott family.
Diane was Joyceโs aunt.
Just when Kayla thought Diane might not be fond of her, Diane suddenly said, โKayla, I heard Joyceโs been giving you trouble?โ
โNot really,โ Kayla replied, surprised, but she kept her cool with a calm smile.
โJoyce has been super competitive ever since she was a kid. She always has to come out on top. You donโt need to bother with her,โ Diane said.
Kayla smiled. โAlright, thanks.โ
โJust because they are family doesnโt mean Dianeโs going to cover for Joyce. Guess I donโt have to worry about that. What a relief,โ Kayla thought.
โKayla, Tuff already gave us instructions. When Joyce shows up, weโll make sure to keep her away from you so she wonโt bother you,โ Alina said.
โJoyce is coming, too?โ Kayla thought, surprised.
Kayla didnโt expect that.
Sheโd checked the guest list. There was no invitation for the Lambert family.
โPeople are just showing up uninvited now? So shameless,โ Kayla thought.
โKayla, how did you and Tuff meet? Tell us the story!โ one of the girls asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
โIโd rather hear about the thrill of fighting and shooting from Kaylaโฆโ another girl chimed in, grinning.
The girls buzzed around Kayla, chattering away.
Lily and Diane just sat back, smiling and listening, looking like guests with nothing to do but enjoy the lively scene.
Kayla handed out the gifts sheโd brought for the girls. Each one was a unique, high-end piece of jewelry or a designer bag.
The girls might come from wealthy families, but they didnโt have that kind of spending power themselves yet. Normally, they couldn't afford stuff like this.
With gifts in hand, they were all smiles, calling Kayla sweetly. Even Landon got royal treatment from them.
Landon had never been surrounded by so many โrelativesโ before, so he was buzzing with excitement and joy.
โKayla, go and check on the dishes in the kitchen and see if anythingโs missing or needs fixing. And make sure the seating is all set up,โ Maggie called out from across the room.
Maggie was throwing her weight around as the matriarch.
The girls all got a little nervous. Theyโd heard Kayla was a strong woman who could handle herself in a fight. โCan she put up with Maggieโs bossy attitude? Are they gonna end up butting heads?โ they wondered.
โOn it!โ Kayla called back.
She gave a quick wave to the ladies and girls, then headed off to the kitchen to get things organized.
The girls shot each other looks.
โKayla is chill,โ one of them whispered.
โCanโt believe she didnโt lose her temperโฆโ another murmured.
Lily and Diane just exchanged smiles, keeping their thoughts to themselves.
They knew the drill when it came to this kind of family drama.
A smart daughter-in-law would never embarrass her mother-in-law in public.
Kayla was one of the clever ones.
However, whether Kayla, the strong-willed woman, would end up clashing with Maggie in the future, well, who knows? Looks like things were about to get lively in the Prescott family!
Betty wasnโt into anything flashy, so her birthday party was held right at home.
The whole family gathered in the morning, and friends and relatives came by in the afternoon. They didnโt invite many people. There were only about ten tables of guests altogether.
The butler and chef had everything running like clockwork, so the matriarch didnโt have to lift a finger.
Kayla took a quick look around the kitchen, but everything was already taken care of.
Lily came in, smiling. โMaggie likes to be in charge. Donโt take it to heart.โ
โIโve never managed household stuff before, so I guess I do need to learn,โ Kayla said, then sat down in the kitchen and started playing a game on her phone.
Lily thought, โThis is what she calls learning? Sheโs got her way of pretending to go along while doing whatever she wants!โ
โLily, what brings you to the kitchen?โ Kayla asked, not even looking up from her game.
Lily replied, โYour sisters wanted some juice, so I came to make some.โ
โLily, youโre such a good homemaker, even making juice,โ Kayla teased.
โHa! Making juice makes me a good homemaker?โ Lily snorted.
โOf course. Iโm clueless about housework. All Iโm good at is blowing cash and throwing punches,โ Kayla shrugged. โLucky for me, my money-making machine keeps my bank account overflowing.โ
Lily could only stare, speechless.
โSeriously, do you have to humblebrag like that?โ Lily thought.
