Maggieโs face went pale. She stepped forward quickly and helped Kayla up. For once, she showed real concern. โDonโt worry. Weโre going to the hospital. We can save the baby!โ
โโฆโ Kayla tried to say she wasnโt pregnant, but the sudden pain made her faint.
โTuff!โ Maggie cried out in terror.
Tuff swept in behind Kayla like a tornado, grabbing her protectively.
โHurry, get to the hospital!โ
The birthday party, which had started so well, ended up getting ruined after all.
Everyone assumed Kayla was pregnant and showed signs of a miscarriage, including Joyce.
Joyce let out a heavy sigh of relief.
She thought, โWith all that blood and pain bad enough to make her pass out, thereโs no way the baby couldโve made it. Itโd be even better if Kayla couldnโt have kids at allโฆโ
With that thought, Joyce lowered her eyes and slipped into a corner to make a call.
Maggie was pacing anxiously outside the ER when Joyce finished her call and came over, putting on a reassuring smile. โDonโt worry, Maggie. Sheโll be fine.โ
โYeah, thatโs right! Itโs nothing serious, just a bit of bleeding. As long as she gets plenty of bed rest, sheโll carry the baby to term with no problem,โ Maggie kept telling herself, trying to stay positive.
Maggie was already imagining how sheโd pamper Kayla from now on.
The ER doors swung open, and the doctor rolled Kayla out on a hospital bed, with Tuff right beside her, looking serious.
Maggie anxiously rushed over and asked, โHow is she? Did you save the baby?โ
โThe patient is not pregnant. Her pain and fainting were caused by a heavy period,โ the doctor said.
โWhat?โ Maggie blurted out, totally stunned.
She was crushed at first, but then she quickly calmed down.
Maggie thought, โHaving her period is way better than a miscarriage, after all. Not pregnant this month? No big deal. They will try again next month. From now on, Kayla has to be super careful, just in case. In short, Kayla has to be careful every single day.โ
Kayla was moved to a ward, and Tuff stayed by her side.
Maggie could tell Tuff was shaken up, so she tried to comfort him. โDonโt worry, Tuff. Itโs normal. Women go through this every month.โ
Chapter 352
โExactly! Sometimes the cramps get bad and the bleedingโs heavy, but itโs nothing unusual,โ Joyce added, trying to reassure him.
Tuff nodded. โGot it. You guys should head home and let Grandma know what happened. Once things calm down, Kayla and I will apologize for messing up her birthday party.โ
โCome on, your grandma wouldnโt care about that,โ Maggie laughed. โSince sheโs fine, you stay here and take care of her.โ
โOkay.โ
Tuff didnโt even think about seeing his mom off. His whole heart was with Kayla.
Brian had warned Tuff there could be aftereffects, but Tuff never thought it would be this serious.
Kayla had lost so much blood today, and sheโd nearly gone into shock.
She was still in so much pain!
It would be bad enough if it only happened once, but she had to suffer like that every single month.
It was not fair.
Every time Tuff thought about it, it tore him up inside.
โHoneyโฆโ Tuff held Kaylaโs hand, his eyes red and voice trembling. โIโm sorry. I shouldโve protected youโฆโ
Tuff thought, โIf only I hadnโt left for that mission and had stayed by Kaylaโs side, none of this wouldโve happened. Itโs time to retire. I canโt even keep my own family safe. What kind of man am I? No wonder Landon wanted out. Me, too. Iโm turning in my resignation tomorrow.โ
Joyce made a point of taking Maggie to see the doctor, hoping to find out how to help Kayla recover and get pregnant as soon as possible.
However, what the doctor said next hit them like a bombshell.
โThe patientโs health is in bad shape. Honestly, itโs going to be hard for her to get pregnant,โ the doctor said.
โWhat?โ Maggie blurted out, completely stunned.
โDoctor, could you please check again? Kayla is so young. How could she have trouble getting pregnant?โ Joyce pressed.
The doctor adjusted his glasses and sighed. โHonestly, saying she has trouble conceiving is putting it mildly. In my experience, Iโm afraid she may never be able to get pregnant again.โ
Maggieโs vision kept going black. She was so dizzy she could barely stay on her feet.
Joyce quickly steadied her. โTake it easy, Maggie. Letโs have Tuff explain. He looks like he knows whatโs up.โ
โGoโฆ go and get him,โ Maggie said, her voice trembling.
Chapter 352
โAlright,โ Landen replied.
Joyce pushed open the door and was stunned by what she saw.
Tuff, the guy who was always so strong, was sitting there, clutching Kaylaโs hand, tears streaming down his face for her.
Joyce felt uneasy. โTuff, Maggie wants to see you.โ
โI canโt right nowโฆโ Tuff said, his voice thick with emotion.
โMaggie already knows she canโt have kids,โ Joyce said softly.
Tuffโs face went pale, his eyes snapping to her, sharp as knives. โDid you tell her?โ
โNo way! I didnโt even know what was going on. She went to the doctor herself,โ Joyce blurted out.
Tuff fell silent.
โNo point hiding it anymore,โ he thought, a wave of helplessness washing over him.
He gently tucked the blanket around Kayla, making sure she was comfortable, then followed Joyce out.
Maggie was slumped on the bench, looking like she was about to fall apart.
โTuff, tell me. What happened?โ said Maggie.
Tuffโs voice was heavy with guilt. โI let her down. She got hurt because I didnโt protect her.โ
โWhat kind of injury could ruin her ability to have kids?โ Maggie was in total disbelief. โTuff, donโt lie to me. Did she get hurt when she was with her exโhusband? Did something go wrong back then?โ
โNo,โ Tuff shot back immediately.
โThen, how is this possible? Sheโs given birth before!โ Maggie pressed, her voice trembling.
โSomeone poisoned her back when we were on that business trip in Dreicean,โ Tuff said, keeping his tone as gentle as he could.
Maggie pressed anxiously, โWhat kind of poison was it?โ
โNot exactly sure. The poisonโs out now, but it still did a number on her body,โ Tuff replied.
โSo that meansโฆ Iโll never get to hold my grandkids?โ Maggie choked out, her voice full of heartbreak.
โMom, Landenโs your grandsonโฆโ Tuff said softly, trying to comfort her, though he knew it wouldnโt help.
โEnough!โ Maggie exploded, her anger boiling over. โWhose grandson is he, huh? Heโs a member of the Kyle family! That kidโs got Kyle blood running through his veins, not ours!โ
Tuff said seriously, โMom, I see Landen as my son. Please donโt say things like that again, or I will be upset.โ
โSlap!โ
Maggie slapped him hard across the face. โYouโre upset? Who are you upset with? If youโd listened to me and never married her, Iโd have my grandkids by now! Instead, youโre playing dad to another manโs son!โ
Chapter 352
โMom!โ Tuff snapped, his voice rising with fury. โStop it! Iโll go and join the Kingsley family as their son if you keep this up!
After venting his anger, Tuff headed straight back to the ward to stay by Kaylaโs side.
He couldnโt help worrying that Kayla might wake up and overhear their argument.
Upon seeing how fiercely Tuff stood up for Kayla, Joyce was dying of envy.
Suddenly, Joyce had an idea. She leaned closer to Maggie and whispered, โDonโt get upset, Maggie. Theyโre still in the honeymoon phase right now. They canโt bear to be apart. But give it a few years. Once things cool off, and Tuff starts wanting kids of his own, heโll drift away from her.โ
โA few years? Do I have to wait years for this?โ Maggie groaned, rubbing her forehead in frustration.
โYou need to be patient,โ Joyce coaxed, her voice soft and sweet.
โEvery time I think about how she canโt have kids, my heart achesโฆ Tuff is the only heir left in the Prescott family. If she canโt give him a child, thatโs the end of our family line!โ Maggie cried, her voice full of despair.
โHow about hiring a surrogate?โ Joyce suggested, her voice sly and low.
Maggie stared for a moment, not getting it. โWhat do you mean?โ
โFind a woman willing to have Tuffโs child. Once the babyโs born, you take the kid, get rid of the mother, and raise the kid as Kaylaโs. No need to acknowledge the mother,โ Joyce explained, her eyes gleaming with cold calculation.
โThatโs a pretty good idea,โ Maggie said, her eyes lighting up with excitement. โBut where are we supposed to find a woman willing and happy to do something like that?โ
โIf you trust me, Maggie, Iโll handle everything,โ Joyce replied, a sly smile on her lips.
โAlright, itโs all up to you!โ Maggie said.
She squeezed Joyceโs hand, her gratitude overflowing.
