Chapter 385

Tuff was relieved to know Kayla wasnโ€™t mad at him, but someone at his house needed to be taught a lesson. After calming Kayla down, he stormed back to his house, murder in his eyes.

The moment Maggie saw him come home, she started avoiding him.

โ€œWhat, Mom? Hiding from me now?โ€ Tuff called out.

Maggie had to come out, putting on a brave face. โ€œWhat nonsense are you spouting?โ€

โ€œMom, let me say it one more timeโ€“Joyceโ€™s kid isnโ€™t mine. If you keep siding with her and disrespecting Kayla in front of everyone, donโ€™t blame me if I leave you to fend for yourself when youโ€™re old,โ€ Tuff said coldly.

Tuff had always been a good son, but now he was actually saying heโ€™d leave his mother to fend for herself.

Maggie realized how serious things had gotten and tried to explain, โ€œIโ€™m not trying to go against Kayla. Iโ€™m just doing this for you, I had no other choiceโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMom, if you really care about me, just stop getting involved with Joyce,โ€ Tuff said, his tone firm.

โ€œBut sheโ€™s got something on you!โ€ Maggie insisted.

โ€œWhat does she have on me?โ€ Tuff asked, baffled.

Maggie shook her head and sighed. โ€œYou fool, that night you spent with herโ€ฆ If she goes to the cops and accuses you of rape, what will you do then?โ€

Tuff let out a bitter laugh. โ€œSo, sheโ€™s using this to manipulate you?โ€

โ€œWhat else do you expect?โ€ Maggie rolled her eyes. โ€œIโ€™ve been keeping my head down and cleaning up your mess, all for you.โ€

โ€œThen why did you collude with her in the first place?โ€ Tuff shot back.

Maggie couldnโ€™t say a wordโ€“she just turned away, guilty as hell.

โ€œMom, let me say it againโ€”nothing ever happened between me and her. If she wants to go to the police, let her. I couldnโ€™t care less.โ€

Maggie frowned in disbelief. โ€œReally? Nothing happened between you two?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right.โ€

โ€œThen what about those bruises on her, and the fact that sheโ€™s pregnant? The day after you two supposedly had that incident, she went to the hospital to get checked for injuries!โ€ Maggie pressed, her voice rising.

โ€œWhatever game sheโ€™s playing, itโ€™s none of my business,โ€ Tuff shot back, sounding completely unconcerned.

โ€œTuffโ€ฆโ€ Maggie tried to say something, but he cut her off, not giving her a chance.

โ€œMom, if you ever embarrass Kayla in front of people again, Iโ€™ll pack my bags and move back to Norava. Donโ€™t test me,โ€ Tuff warned, his tone icy and unyielding.

He threw down those harsh words and stormed out, leaving Maggie standing there in shock.

Maggie just stood there, his words echoing in her mind, completely stunned.

If Tuff really hadnโ€™t done anything with Joyce, then sheโ€™d been totally duped.

The realization hit her hardโ€“she felt so disgusted, it was like sheโ€™d just swallowed something foul.

She quickly called the hospital. โ€œFind a way to collect a fetal DNA sample during Joyceโ€™s next prenatal check-upโ€“I need a paternity testโ€ฆโ€

โ€˜Joyce, youโ€™d better not be playing me for a fool,โ€™ Maggie thought grimly.

Joyceโ€™s fuss was like a gust of windโ€“once it passed, it was gone.

Meanwhile, in Lunova, Kayla had picked up a new nickname: โ€œPrincess of Kingsley.โ€ Even Daniel caught wind of it.

At the dinner, Daniel couldnโ€™t help teasing Tuff. โ€œSo, howโ€™s the Princess of Kingsley doing?โ€

โ€œOf course, sheโ€™s great,โ€ Tuff replied.

โ€œAnd how are you doing?โ€ Daniel shot him a wicked grin.

Kayla isnโ€™t some fragile, sentimental typeโ€“she was a leading lady who had emerged victorious from a battlefield of strife.

Drama like throwing tantrums or threatening divorce was not her style. Sheโ€™d aim for something far grander.

Tuff was speechless. โ€œDaniel, canโ€™t you just wish me well for once?โ€

โ€œJoyceโ€™s drama is all over Lunova. No way youโ€™re still doing fine after that,โ€ Daniel laughed.

โ€œDid you tell Landon?โ€ Tuff asked, his voice trembling.

Daniel snorted. โ€œSeriously? Is that all the guts youโ€™ve got?โ€

โ€œIf you were in my shoes, youโ€™d be scared too!โ€ Tuff shot back, rolling his eyes.

Daniel actually paused and gave it some real thought before saying, โ€œYeah, Iโ€™d be scared too.โ€

Tuff was furious and downed a glass of wine in one gulp.

โ€œBy the way, whatโ€™s really going on between you and Joyce?โ€ Daniel asked.

โ€œSheโ€™s been raising hell, and honestly, I shouldโ€™ve taught her a real lesson. Butโ€ฆ I owe her brother my life,โ€ Tuff said, downing another drink, the bitterness in his heart as strong as the taste in his mouth.

โ€œYou mean Dominick?โ€ Daniel exclaimed in shock.

Dominick was his age, and theyโ€™d been classmates all the way from elementary to high school.

He grew up to be the kind of guy girls called a real prince charmingโ€“tall, handsome, and always the center of attention.

Compared to Dominickโ€™s flawless good looks, Joyce was downright ugly, as if her genes had mutated.

But then, one day, Dominick just disappeared without a trace.

The Lambert family kept totally quiet about itโ€“no funeral, nothing. Daniel always thought Dominick had just headed overseas to chase his dreams.

It turned out Dominick was dead all along.

โ€œHeโ€ฆ he shielded me from a knife and died right in front of meโ€ฆโ€ Tuff buried his face in his hands.

The Lambert and Prescott families had been family friends for generations, and Dominick was Tuffโ€™s childhood friend.

Dominick had a bright future ahead of him.

If the person seeking revenge that night hadnโ€™t tracked him to the night marketโ€ฆ if he had been just a little quickerโ€ฆ but none of that matters now.

Dominick was already dead.

He had no idea what was going on, but still threw himself in front of the blade for his best friend.

โ€œTuffโ€ฆโ€ Daniel was completely floored.

In Danielโ€™s memory, Dominick was just a good-looking guyโ€“timid and so weak.

He had never thought Dominick would be the one to take a knife for Tuff.

โ€œAfter that happened, I swore Iโ€™d look after the Lambert family for him. My mom even made Joyce her goddaughter. Weโ€™ve always watched out for them in business, and kept close in daily lifeโ€ฆโ€ Tuff said slowly, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his glass.

Good thing the glass was tough, or he wouldโ€™ve crushed it.

โ€œYou really had no clue what Joyce was after, did you?โ€ Daniel asked.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Tuff replied.

โ€œThen you canโ€™t blame yourself,โ€ Daniel said, patting Tuff on the shoulder. โ€œHonestly, Joyceโ€™s nothing like Dominick. Sheโ€™s got zero backboneโ€“just desperate and shameless. If Dominick were still around, heโ€™d be embarrassed to have her as his sister.โ€

โ€œReally? Would he?โ€ Tuff asked, his voice thick with bitterness.

โ€œIf my sister ever acted like that, Iโ€™d have to set her straight myself!โ€ Daniel said. โ€œHonestly, Mais used to be pretty wildโ€“sheโ€™d always fight for my attention with Amy, and I had to put her in her place more than once.โ€

Tuff was at a loss for words. โ€˜Do siblings really compete for family love?โ€™

โ€œI remember Dominickโ€™s dad was never much of a businessman. The Lambert family was barely hanging on for yearsโ€“if it werenโ€™t for your family, they wouldโ€™ve gone under long ago. Tuff, youโ€™ve already done more than enough,โ€ Daniel said.

โ€œNo matter what I do, itโ€™ll never make up for Dominickโ€™s lifeโ€ฆโ€ Tuff muttered, the guilt weighing heavy in his chest.

โ€œYou owe Dominick, but you donโ€™t owe Joyce anything,โ€ Daniel clapped Tuff hard on the shoulder.

Tuff straightened up. โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œCome on, Dominick was a great guy. You think he gave his life so youโ€™d let Joyce walk all over you?โ€ Daniel said.

โ€œOf course not! Dominick was pure-hearted and always did the right thingโ€ฆโ€ Tuff replied, his voice trailing off.

โ€œExactly,โ€ Daniel said, raising his glass with a grin. โ€œDominick gave his life to save you, not so youโ€™d let his sister walk all over you.โ€

Tuff clinked his glass against Danielโ€™s, finally seeing things clearlyโ€“a sense of relief washing over him.

He was convinced Dominick would never want that.

Joyceโ€™s wickedness didnโ€™t deserve to eclipse Dominickโ€™s kindness.

โ€œDaniel, thanks for setting me straight,โ€ Tuff said, downing three shots in a row to show his respect.

Daniel winked mysteriously. โ€œDonโ€™t thank meโ€“thank your Princess of Kingsley.โ€

โ€œHmm?โ€

Tuff suddenly sensed something and whipped around.

Not far off, Kayla was standing thereโ€“serene and graceful as ever.

When she saw him turn, she locked her phone screen and walked toward him.
