Chapter 395

Kayla stood there, her expression unreadable. 'Great, just my luck. I run into a mad dog today,' she thought.

โ€œWho do you think you are, yelling like that? Youโ€™re nothing but trash!โ€ Lizbeth Prescott was the first to snap back, standing with her hands on her hips, full of attitude as she glared at Joyce.

In the Prescotts' eyes, Joyce, once the pride of the Lambert family, had fallen off her pedestal and was now no better than a girl hustling for scraps on the street.

Joyce ignored Lizbeth completely and stormed straight up to Kayla. โ€œIt was you! Youโ€™re the one who spread that video and made me a laughingstock!โ€

โ€œKayla, how could you be so vicious? Youโ€™ve already stolen Tuff from me. What, now you want to ruin me for good?โ€ Joyce yelled, her voice shaking with rage. Joyce demanded, her anger boiling over.

Kayla, the queen bee of Lunova, was always the center of attention wherever she went. And this scene was no exception.

A crowd quickly gathered, forming a tight circle around them, with some people even whipping out their phones to record the drama. People have always loved to watch the drama unfold.

Kayla let out a weary sigh. 'Figures. The mad dogโ€™s at it again, pinning everything on me,' she thought.

โ€œWhy so quiet, Kayla? What, feeling guilty now? I knew it was you! You just want to destroy me and leave me with nothing!โ€ Joyce screamed, her voice shaking with fury.

โ€œWhat video?โ€ Kayla drawled, her tone slow and almost mocking.

Joyce totally lost her cool and blurted out, โ€œItโ€™s the video of me and Quentin sleepingโ€ฆโ€

The crowd fell silent for a split second before bursting into laughter.

โ€œShe just admitted it herself!โ€ someone shouted.

โ€œSo she really is the girl in that video,โ€ another person said.

โ€œShe was crying like a kitten in that video, but now sheโ€™s acting all fierce!โ€ someone else chimed in.

โ€˜Damn it! I fell right into Kaylaโ€™s trap again!โ€™ she thought, her heart sinking. The video was already all over the place, and now sheโ€™d just confirmed it in front of everyone. There was no way she could spin this.

โ€œOh, harder, pleaseโ€ฆโ€ Lizbeth mocked in a fake, whiny voice, mimicking Joyceโ€™s lines from the video. The crowd burst out laughing all over again.

Joyce wished the ground would swallow her whole. She shoved her way through the crowd and bolted, her face flaming with humiliation.

Kayla shook her head, feeling a mix of exasperation and disbelief. 'Seriously, Joyce is just hopeless. She walks right into every trap I lay out for her. Maybe Iโ€™m being a bit too harsh?' Kayla thought.

โ€œDonโ€™t let her get to you, Kayla. Letโ€™s go get our nails done!โ€ Lizbeth said, trying to lighten the mood.

โ€œSounds good!โ€ Kayla replied.

Joyceโ€™s little stunt didnโ€™t even count as a blip on Kaylaโ€™s radar. It was so insignificant that it didnโ€™t affect her in the slightest.

โ€œKayla, you never seem to lose your cool! How do you stay so chill?โ€ Lizbeth asked, her eyes wide with curiosity.

Kayla swiped her card for them and shrugged, โ€œHonestly, I never waste energy stressing out โ€“ except for that time I got hurt and found out I couldnโ€™t get pregnant. That was the only time I really let it get to me.โ€

โ€œYou only ever get worked up because you love Tuff so much!โ€ Lizbeth teased, flashing a mischievous grin.

โ€œExactly,โ€ Kayla nodded. โ€œAll that overthinking just messes with your head and your heart โ€“ doesnโ€™t help at all.โ€

Pan chimed in, โ€œHonestly, instead of overthinking, you might as well just let loose.โ€

โ€œJust donโ€™t go off the rails like Joyce did,โ€ Lizbeth laughed.

Kayla thought to herself, 'Joyce isnโ€™t crazy. Sheโ€™s just asking for trouble. If she keeps this up, sheโ€™ll end up sending herself straight to hell.'

Funny thing was that Kayla had all the videos in her possession and was certain none of them had ever leaked. So she didnโ€™t know where that sex tape floating around out there even came from.

On New Yearโ€™s Eve, Maggie went all out and put together a proper reunion feast for the whole family.

It was Kaylaโ€™s first New Yearโ€™s after marrying in, so Maggie was determined to make a great impression.

She even added some Norava specialties to the menu and gave a gift to Landen. While they were eating, Maggie turned to Kayla with a smile. โ€œHow about inviting your mom over for dinner on the second day of the new year? She can stay a few days and have some fun in Lunova.โ€

โ€œSounds great!โ€ Tuff jumped in, answering for Kayla.

Gloria hadnโ€™t even been to the Prescott family yet. Tuff called her right away, and Gloria was thrilled. โ€œOh, really? Thatโ€™s wonderful! Actually, I was just about to invite you all to Norava for the New Year myselfโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhy donโ€™t you come to Lunova this year? Next year, weโ€™ll all head to Norava for the holidays. Okay? Great, Kayla and I will pick you up at the airportโ€ฆโ€ Tuff said, grinning from ear to ear.

Maggie felt a mix of emotions swirling inside.

Her son always put on his best behavior for everyone else, but when it came to her, he just gave her attitude.

โ€œRaising sons really canโ€™t compare to raising daughters,โ€ she grumbled to herself.

Seeing Maggie looking so down, Betty couldnโ€™t help but say, โ€œThis is all on you for not getting your act together sooner. At least you finally saw the light.โ€

Maggie gave an awkward smile.

โ€œCheer up, now. Kaylaโ€™s just like another daughter to us. If Iโ€™m still able to get around next year, Iโ€™ll go with you all to Norava,โ€ Betty said.

โ€œYouโ€™re right. Iโ€™ll do as you say,โ€ Maggie replied, her smile finally relaxing.

Honestly, Maggie had it pretty good. She might not have always been the sharpest, but her husband had doted on her all her life, helped her hold her own against the other wives, and made sure she stayed in charge of the household.

โ€œSo, Kayla, Tuff isnโ€™t even coming home for New Yearโ€™s?โ€ Lily asked, sounding a little disappointed.

Maggieโ€™s smile faltered, and she gave an awkward reply, โ€œItโ€™s the busiest time of year. Heโ€™s just completely worn out.โ€

That was Tuffโ€™s father, Raymond Prescott, the current patriarch of the Prescott family.

Heโ€™d only shown up briefly at Tuffโ€™s wedding and hadnโ€™t been seen since. Kayla couldnโ€™t even recall his face.

When Kayla heard that Raymond was sick, she put down her fork and was about to offer some words of concern, but Betty was already freaking out. โ€œWhat? Heโ€™s sick during the holidays? And heโ€™s all the way abroad with no one to take care of him. What are we going to do?โ€

โ€œMom, donโ€™t worry. His secretary, Ms. Leah Sharp, is taking care of him,โ€ Maggie said, trying to sound reassuring.

โ€œIsnโ€™t his secretary a woman? I remember Ms. Sharp is prettyโ€ฆโ€ Lily said, her voice full of implication.

Maggieโ€™s face fell even further.

Kayla kept her cool and said, โ€œSheโ€™s still not as pretty as your secretary, Terrell.โ€

โ€œHey now, Kayla, donโ€™t start making things up. Itโ€™s totally innocent between me and my secretaryโ€ฆโ€ Terrell blurted out, trying to clear his name.

Kayla grinned, โ€œWhy so jumpy, Terrell? I never said you two had anything going on.โ€

Terrell just stared, lost for words.

โ€œRight, Auntie?โ€ Kaylaโ€™s eyes drifted over to Lily.

โ€œLots of people hire female secretaries โ€“ theyโ€™re just more attentive. And with the Prescott family being so prominent, having a pretty secretary makes us look good in public,โ€ Lily added quickly, flashing an awkward smile.

โ€œExactly!โ€ Terrell chimed in.

The party picked up again, but Maggie was still sulking.

Tuff might usually come off as a bit rough, but when he got serious, he was scary good at picking up on things.

He instantly sensed his parents were hiding something, so he shot his dad a message: [Hey Dad, youโ€™re really not coming home for New Yearโ€™s? Itโ€™s Kaylaโ€™s first time spending the holiday with us, and her momโ€™s coming over too!]

Raymond replied: [Not feeling wellโ€ฆ]

Tuff texted back: [No big deal. Just come back to Lunova and let Dr. Mitchell work his magic. Youโ€™ll be back on your feet in no time. If you canโ€™t get a flight, Iโ€™ll send the jet for you.]

There was a long pause before Raymond finally replied: [Alright, Iโ€™ll come back first thing in the morning.]

Kayla watched Tuff sneakily texting and thought to herself, 'Are my in-laws just pretending to be a couple while living totally separate lives? Is Mr. Prescott seeing someone else behind Maggieโ€™s back?'

โ€œGrandma, let me toast to you!โ€ Landen, ever the little charmer, raised his glass. โ€œHereโ€™s to you staying young and happy every day!โ€

Maggieโ€™s heart, which had been feeling so heavy, suddenly lightened, and she couldnโ€™t help but smile. โ€œThank you, my sweet boy!โ€

โ€œMaggie, let me toast to you too! Thanks for raising Tuff so well. Iโ€™m the lucky one here,โ€ Kayla said, raising her glass.

Maggie was moved to tears, overwhelmed by emotion.

Honestly, raising such an outstanding son was the greatest achievement of her life.

As long as Tuff was by her side, no matter what Raymond got up to on the side, her place in the family was rock solid.

As the party wound down, the fireworks started lighting up the sky.

But just then, someone started pounding on the door. โ€œJoyce tried to kill herself! Please, help her!โ€
