Chapter 403
Kayla stumbled back, her heart racing, until her back hit the wall. She struggled to remember, forcing herself to recall what had happened. But her mind was filled only with the blood-red sky reflected by the raging fire. That was the final fate of the Limitless Sect, reduced to ashes. Brian was gone. His parents were gone tooโฆ
โMaybe Iโve forgotten,โ Kayla thought, โor maybe that blue-eyed man is just trying to trick me!โ
Kayla struggled to catch her breath, desperately telling herself, โIt has to be the second one. Thereโs no way Iโm forgetting. He must be lying to me!โ
โThe couple who raised you in the Limitless Sectโthey were Brianโs real parents!โ the blue-eyed man spat out, his eyes burning with hatred.
Kayla felt like sheโd been struck by lightning, almost passing out. She gulped for air and stammered, โAnd you? Who are you, really?โ
โMeโฆ?โ The blue-eyed man gave a mysterious smile, his answer hanging in the air. But before Kayla could press him, he suddenly tensed up, spun around, and in a flash, vaulted over the courtyard wall. With a few agile leaps, he vanished into the darkness like a shadow.
Kayla tried to run after him, but her mind was still reeling from the shock. Her body just wouldnโt listen. By the time she managed to move, he was already long gone.
โWho is he, really?โ Kayla thought, feeling utterly defeated and lost. She crouched down, clutching her head, her mind aching as she tried to make sense of everything.
โKayla.โ The familiar voice called out above her.
Kayla looked up and saw Landon standing there. He wasnโt wearing his usual suit today. Instead, he was rocking a set of black athletic gear. It looked stretchy enough for a fightโlike he was ready to throw down at any moment.
โWhy are you here?โ Kayla blurted out, surprised.
Landon reached out and helped her up, his voice low and serious. โIโve been here for a few days.โ
โYouโฆโ Kayla began, trailing off.
โIโm after that guy too,โ Landon said.
Kayla finally got it. Theyโd both been working in the shadows, and ended up running into each other.
โLandon, who is he?โ Kayla pressed, clutching his hand, her voice trembling with urgency. She had to know the truth.
โHonestly, I still donโt know,โ Landon said, worry etched on his face. โWho he is isnโt what matters right nowโฆโ
โNo, it matters!โ Kayla shot back, her voice getting louder. โHe said Brian was the young master of the Limitless Sectโฆโ
Landon fell silent. He was just as stunned tonight when he heard it. Brian was a good guy. He always had Kaylaโs back all these years, and when she finally found happiness, he quietly faded into the background. He loved her, but he never said it out loud because between them lay a deep, bloody grudgeโฆ
โLandon, just tell me who is Brian, really? Whatโs his true identity?โ Kayla pressed, her voice shaking with urgency.
โCalm down. Letโs get out of here first. This isnโt the right place to talk,โ Landon said, keeping his voice low.
โOkay,โ Kayla replied softly.
Kayla grabbed Landonโs hand and pulled him outside. The moonlight stretched their shadows long and thin, spilling across the narrow, old alley. It wasnโt until they got in the car that Landon finally spoke. โArenโt you worried Tuff will be mad if he finds out youโre digging into all this behind his back?โ
Kayla stayed quiet. She wasnโt worried about Tuff getting mad. But right now, she was really scared. She was terrified of Brian and that blue-eyed manโฆ The Limitless Sect had once been her saviors, the ones who raised her as their own. But in the end, it was her husband and brother who brought about the destruction of the Limitless Sect. She didnโt know how to face Brian after all that. Every time these thoughts crossed her mind, her chest felt so tight she could barely breathe. The pain was suffocating, but there was no one she could confide in, nowhere to let it all outโฆ
โKayla, stop overthinking. Itโs bad for your health,โ Landon said calmly. โWe shouldโve told Tuff about all this sooner.โ
โYouโre rightโฆโ Kayla sighed, her shoulders slumping. She let her hands drop, exhausted. โYou call him. I donโt want to talk right now.โ
Landon made the call, and Tuff showed up in no time. When he saw Kayla looking so defeated and broken, he went pale. โWhat happened?โ
โGet in the car. Iโll explain,โ Landon said.
As Landon slowly laid out everything that had happened, Tuffโs jaw dropped. He quickly pulled up the files on the Limitless Sect on his phoneโsure enough, the sect leaderโs last name was Shawn.
โIt really is Brianโฆโ Tuff muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. He hadnโt seen this coming at all. He glanced at Kayla, worry etched on his face, completely at a loss for what to do next. The Limitless Sect had acted as spies, stealing secrets. They were a malignant force that had to be wiped out. But the Limitless Sect were also the ones who saved Kaylaโs life. If Brianโs parents hadnโt taken her in, she wouldโve died ages ago.
โThat guy said Brian went off to study medicine. He was never even listed as a member of the Limitless Sect. Maybe he never wanted anything to do with his parentsโ business in the first place,โ Landon mused.
Tuff quickly agreed, โYeah, that must be it! Otherwise, why wouldnโt he be out there trying to avenge his parents?โ
The room went dead silent. Brianโs enemies were none other than Tuff and Landonโthe two men Kayla cared about most in this world.
โHow was Brian supposed to get his revenge now?โ Landon thought.
Tuff and Landon exchanged glances, a silent understanding passing between them. โLetโs just face Brian head-on,โ Landon said. โTime to find out what he really wants.โ
โNo!โ Kayla shouted, her voice cracking with emotion.
โHow could I possibly face Brian now? Iโm too ashamed!โ she thought.
โKayla, take it easy. Maybe that guy was just trying to drive a wedge between us,โ Landon said softly, trying to calm her down.
Kayla gripped her collar, her voice shaky. โDrive a wedge between us?โ
โWe need to talk to him and clear things up. Otherwise, we might hurt him all over again,โ Tuff said.
If there was anyone in this worldโbesides her own familyโwhose safety Kayla worried about most, it was Brian. He was a genuinely good guy, and all she wanted was for him to be safe and happy. They might not keep in touch much, but deep down, she would always wish him the best.
โBut what if it really was him?โ Kayla asked, her voice shaky with worry.
โThen weโll just put everything out in the open and talk it throughโfigure out a solution that works for everyone,โ Landon said, shooting Tuff a knowing look. โAlright, let me get you both home first. Once Iโve reached out to him, weโll see what happens next.โ
โOkay,โ Kayla replied softly.
Tuff shot her a quick wink to show he got the message. He wasnโt too worried about Kayla breaking down. What really scared him was her getting another one of those headaches from digging up the past.
