Chapter 415
Tuff never saw it coming. His dad, the hardworking businessman whoโd always been hustling to keep the family afloat, turned out to be a member of the Flying Tiger Sect. And not just any memberโhe was actually one of the top dogs!
He was the guy who could decide if Kayla was guilty or not, just like that. After a quick huddle with his fellow leaders, they even made Kayla official and gave her a legit spot on the team.
He hadnโt even finished quitting yet, and his wife was already getting hired. Talk about a plot twist. Seriously, he couldnโt make this stuff up.
Landon was driving, and he couldnโt help but chuckle at Tuffโs frustrated face.
โLooks like Kaylaโs gonna be your boss from now on,โ Landon teased, barely holding back his laughter.
โHasnโt she always been the one calling the shots?โ Tuff replied.
Tuff let out a sigh.
Life in the underworld was full of chaos and trouble. He just wanted to go back to a simple, peaceful life. But with Kayla joining the team, that was never gonna happen.
With Kayla joining the team, there was no way life was ever going to be peaceful again.
โMaybe she actually likes the chaos,โ Landon said, grinning from ear to ear.
Kayla had always been ambitious, but her whole life sheโd been kept on a short leash, shuffled from place to place, never getting a real shot at her own career.
Now, finally, her chance had come. All those skills sheโd worked so hard to master could finally be put to use for her country. She had to be over the moon about it.
โLandon, I bet youโre trying to trip me up,โ Tuff said, shooting Landon a sideways glare.
โNo way,โ Landon denied flatly.
Tuff huffed, โDonโt even try to deny it! That smug look on your face says youโre loving this.โ
โIs it really that obvious? Guess Iโd better fix my face,โ Landon said, reaching up with one hand. He rubbed his face, trying to force himself to look serious.
Tuff was just speechless.
When they got back to the Prescott family, Raymond and Kayla were already there, chatting with Betty.
Betty absolutely adored Kayla, and when she heard Kayla had landed an official position, she was over the moon.
The Prescott family wasnโt hurting for money, but having a family member in an official job was like icing on the cake.
โTuff, your wife is amazing! Sheโs got a real job now,โ Betty said, beaming.
โYeah, sheโs something else,โ Tuff said, his voice trailing off, not sure whether to laugh or cry.
โHonestly, I donโt even know what to say anymore,โ Tuff thought, feeling totally at a loss.
Raymond looked at him and gave a gentle smile. โYour resignationโs getting approved tomorrow.โ
โWhat?โ Tuff was stunned.
โI already gave your hamster a heads-up,โ his dad added.
โClassic Dad move,โ he thought, half amused and half exasperated.
He couldnโt help but say, โSo, since you guys are still working, maybe I donโt have to quit after allโฆ?โ
โToo late. Itโs already been approved,โ his dad cut him off.
Tuff was completely at a loss for words.
Kayla chuckled, โSo, you guys went to Project Azureveil?โ
โYeah, we just got back. You two really blew us away,โ Landon said.
โI never expected Raymond to be such a badass,โ Kayla said with a grin.
Honestly, Kayla had always figured her secret would get out sooner or later, so sheโd dropped some hints to Joyce on purpose.
She figured while Tuff and Landon still had some influence, it was the perfect chance to clear things up about her identity.
But then Dally showed up out of nowhere, and finding out Raymond was a top leader at Project Azureveil? That was next-level surprising.
Kaylaโs transition into the official team had been shockingly smooth.
From now on, she didnโt have to worry about her past anymore. She could live a clean, honest life, serving her country and its people.
All those years of hard work and training were finally making a real differenceโno more being trapped in an office, buried under boring reports.
โDad, how could you do this?โ Tuff finally blew up.
โA real man keeps his word. What did you promise Dr. Shawn?โ his dad shot back.
Tuff was left speechless.
โDamn, I agreed to quit for Brian, but I never thought Kayla would be the one getting hired!โ he thought, totally frustrated.
He almost wished he hadnโt quit. Maybe he shouldโve just stuck it out and faced everything together with Kayla.
โItโs just a cushy position, not like Iโll actually have to do much,โ Kayla said, trying to reassure him.
Tuff pouted, โHoneyโฆโ
โRelax, Iโve never really had a job before. I just want to give it a try,โ Kayla said with a smile.
โThen what am I supposed to do?โ Tuff asked, still sulking.
โJust run the company, okay? And if the Prescott business isnโt enough to keep you busy, you can always help out with my new business too,โ Kayla said, half-teasing.
The two of them kept teasing and comforting each other, all lovey-dovey, making the best of their crazy situation.
Meanwhile, Raymond and Landon headed out for drinks. Having been through thick and thin together in the same unit, they had endless stories to share.
They drank to their heartsโ content and swapped stories late into the night.
The next day, Landon mailed the dossier Brian had sent right back to him.
โBrian, thanks for all your help. Kaylaโs fine now, so Iโm sending this back. It hasnโt gone public yet, so you should hang onto it,โ Landon said.
When Brian got the package, he was caught off guard.
But remembering who Landon and Tuff really were, he relaxed.
โGuess I was just being too anxious,โ Brian thought.
Those two will definitely keep Kayla safeโno doubt about it.
โThey donโt even care about what you did for them, do they?โ Dally sneered, his voice cold and eyes burning with hatred.
โDally, canโt we just live a peaceful life?โ Brian said calmly as he packed up his things.
โPeaceful? How are we supposed to be at peace when they killed our parents?!โ Dally shouted, his voice trembling with rage.
Brian lowered his gaze, his tone steady. โThat was the wrong path from the start. I warned Mom and Dad about it.โ
โSo what? Who says you gotta play by the rules your whole life?โ Dally snapped.
โThe law. Justice. Humanity,โ Brian said flatly.
Brian just stared at Dally, completely speechless.
โMan, heโs totally lost it. Good thing I showed up when I did, or who knows what kind of mess heโd have made,โ Brian thought.
โBrian, you donโt even deserve the Shawn name. Weโre family! What gives you the right to stand there acting all holier-than-thou, judging your own blood?โ Dally spat.
โSay something, will you? What, you just gonna stand there and keep your mouth shut? If you wanna chicken out, fine, but donโt drag me down with you!โ Dally snapped, his eyes blazing.
โI swear, Iโm gonna get revenge for Mom and Dad, even if it kills me!โ Dally shouted, his voice trembling with rage.
โYouโve got a thing for Kayla, donโt you? What a wuss! If you like her so much, why donโt you just go for it? Keep acting like this and youโll never have a shot,โ Dally taunted, his tone full of scorn.
Dally had been drugged by Brian, so he couldnโt leave or even put up a fight.
All Dally could do was cuss Brian out.
He just kept running his mouth nonstopโyelling until he wore himself out, then taking a breather before starting up again.
Brian felt like his ears had grown calluses from all the noise.
Sometimes Brian tried to talk back, but if Dally didnโt listen, he just let it slide.
He was determined to keep Dally in check and make sure he didnโt stir up any more trouble.
โBrian, Kayla doesnโt even know youโre into her, does she? Why donโt you just come clean and tell her?โ Dally taunted, his voice thick with sarcasm.
โIs it just because Tuff beat you to the punch? Donโt sweat it. If you really want her, I can help you out,โ Dally continued, a sly grin spreading across his face.
โBrian, Iโm not kidding. I know a guy whoโs a real master at hypnosis. He could totally help youโฆโ Dally lowered his voice conspiratorially.
Brianโs head snapped up, eyes sharp. โWho?โ
