Chapter 42

Amelia wondered, โ€œHas his vocal cords recovered? Can he speak now?โ€ She was so overjoyed that she forgot to stay mad. Rushing over to Landon, she patted his back to help him breathe while encouraging him. โ€œCough a bit more. Come on, harder.โ€

Gloria, watching them with a complicated expression, thought, โ€œIf he keeps coughing like that, isnโ€™t he going to choke again?โ€

Landon finally stopped coughing, though he shot an annoyed glare at Amelia. With his eyes filled with silent accusation, he asked inwardly, โ€œWhat did you say to Mom to make her misunderstand?โ€

โ€œForget about that. Quick, try speaking,โ€ Amelia urged, her eyes fixed on his throat. For the first time, she realized even a manโ€™s Adamโ€™s apple could be described as beautiful. It proved that when one was in a good mood, everything looked pleasing.

Landon also hoped he could speak. With some anticipation, he tried to make a sound using his vocal cords. Both Amelia and Gloria watched him intently, holding their breath. But there was no sound.

โ€œStill nothingโ€ฆโ€ he murmured inwardly as he lowered his gaze in disappointment. He then wondered, โ€œI was sure I felt my vocal cords and Adamโ€™s apple moving when I coughed earlier. Why isnโ€™t it working now?โ€

Amelia and Gloria felt just as disappointed, but they understood that the patientโ€™s emotional well-being was even more important. They both quickly masked their disappointment, smiling gently as they reassured him, โ€œItโ€™s alright. Just take it slow.โ€

Their forced cheerfulness only made Landon feel worse. However, being the resilient type, he quickly adjusted his mood and asked Amelia, โ€œAre you disappointed?โ€

She replied, โ€œRecovery is always a process. It takes time. Some patients in a vegetative state never regain consciousness. But look at youโ€“youโ€™re aware and can even move your hand. Thatโ€™s already amazing.โ€ Her tone was so warm and reassuring it could calm anyone.

Landon felt a bit better, and he opened up more, saying inwardly, โ€œDonโ€™t worry. My uncle wonโ€™t bother you again these next few days.โ€

โ€œMm.โ€ Amelia nodded. Although she had no idea what he had done, she didnโ€™t care to ask. When Landon Kingsley took action, it was never something ordinary. What concerned her more now was the Edwards familyโ€™s stock holdings.

Gloria, unable to hear Landonโ€™s inner thoughts and only hearing Ameliaโ€™s voice, sighed silently. She thought, โ€œAmy really has such patience.โ€

Before long, Wesley burst into the room with medicine in hand, shouting, โ€œAmelia, can you be a little more restrained? What? Were you celibate in your past lifeโ€“ohโ€ฆโ€

The moment he spotted Gloria, his voice trailed off. She glared at him sharply and snapped, โ€œWhat nonsense are you spouting?โ€

โ€œMโ€“Mrs. Gloriaโ€ฆโ€ Wesley deflated instantly, stammering. โ€œWhat I meant wasโ€ฆLandonโ€™s body is still recovering, soโ€ฆuh, that kind of thing should be avoided for now.โ€

Ameliaโ€™s face flushed bright red with embarrassment. She couldnโ€™t exactly tell Gloria that she hadnโ€™t even touched Landon like that.

โ€œWhat is wrong with him?โ€ Amelia thought, utterly mortified. โ€œAlthoughโ€ฆI did go through life without sleeping with anyone before, but come on, like Iโ€™d force myself on someone in a vegetative state.โ€

โ€œHe was doing just fine last time I came here. How did he suddenly become so weak?โ€ Wesley raised his voice, glaring at Amelia in frustration.

โ€œHow can you blame anyone for Landonโ€™s poor health?โ€ Gloria snatched the medicine from Wesleyโ€™s hands and promptly dismissed him. โ€œYou can leave now.โ€ Wesley, panting and drenched in sweat, fell silent, completely speechless at her blunt dismissal.

In the end, it was Amelia who stepped in to mediate. โ€œSince Dr. Harrington is already here, why not have him check on Landon?โ€

Wesley quickly chimed in, โ€œYeah. Let me check on Landon.โ€

Gloria, unimpressed, urged, โ€œHurry up then.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Wesley muttered.

Under Gloriaโ€™s stern glare, Wesley dared not retort to Amelia anymore. After completing a round of examinations, he grinned sheepishly and announced. โ€œLandon is quite healthy, actually.โ€

Gloria wasted no time in responding, โ€œThen you can leave now.โ€ She really knew how to discard people once theyโ€™d served their purpose. Amelia couldnโ€™t help laughing as she looked at Wesley, who was clearly frustrated but scared to speak.

Wesley shot Amelia a sharp look before discreetly motioning her to follow him. She stepped outside with him and asked, โ€œDr. Harrington, is there anything else you need to tell me?โ€

Blushing slightly, he hesitated, trying to phrase his words carefully. โ€œI understand Mrs. Gloriaโ€™s intentions in wanting you to marry Landon. But heโ€™s still in a vegetative state, so please donโ€™t take advantage of him. You donโ€™t have to go to extremes to have children.โ€

He sighed inwardly, โ€œUgh, discussing this with a womanโ€ฆ Itโ€™s really embarrassing.โ€

โ€œActually, we havenโ€™t done anything,โ€ Amelia said plainly.

โ€œHuh?โ€ Wesley froze in place. โ€œYโ€“You mean, you two arenโ€™tโ€ฆโ€

Amelia shook her head and added, โ€œNo. Iโ€™m not so heartless as to force myself on a man who canโ€™t even move.โ€

Wesley blinked in disbelief, thoroughly embarrassed. โ€œSo I was wrong this whole time? As a doctor, does this count as a professional misjudgment?โ€ he thought.

โ€œBut Gloria must not know about this, got it?โ€ Amelia gave him a sharp side glance.

Wesley nodded furiously. โ€œGot it. I swear, I wonโ€™t say a word.โ€

He reflected, โ€œEveryoneโ€™s been saying Amelia dumped her exโ€“boyfriend to marry Landon just so she could have a kid and become Mrs. Kingsley. They even gossip about how shameless she is, throwing herself at men and all that nonsense.

โ€œBut now that I think about it, I was way off. How could I believe those rumors? Ameliaโ€™s selfless, really. Sheโ€™s willing to take the blame and protect Landonโ€™s reputation. I should treat her better from now on.โ€

The threeโ€“day deadline had passed, and Aaron personally went to the hospital to remind Walter about his debt. โ€œMr. Edwards, about the money you owe Kingsley Groupโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have any money,โ€ Walter replied, lying lifelessly on the hospital bed, completely defeated.

He sighed inwardly, โ€œI tried to play smart, but I ended up shooting myself in the foot. Now, Iโ€™m like a fish on their chopping block.

โ€œThatโ€™s 100 million dollars debt. Even if I sold everything I owned, I couldnโ€™t pay it back. The only thing I can do now isโ€ฆplay dead. What are they gonna do anyway? Kill me? No matter what, Iโ€™m still the father of Landonโ€™s wife.โ€

Aaron smiled faintly, โ€œIn that case, weโ€™ll have to take legal action then.โ€

Walter, unbothered and shameless, sneered, โ€œGo back and tell Amelia that if she really dares to sue me, Iโ€™ll die right here and now.โ€

Aaron remained calm. โ€œThereโ€™s no need for that. Before I came here, Mrs. Kingsley already told me to remind you that your choicesโ€“any of them, including what you do with your lifeโ€“have nothing to do with her.โ€

โ€œSheโ€ฆ Sheโ€™s utterly rebellious.โ€ Walter sat up in a fury, but the movement pulled at the fresh scabs on his back, causing him to grimace in pain.

He huffed, โ€œThat ungrateful bratโ€“is she trying to drive me to my grave? Sheโ€™ll be struck by heavenโ€™s wrath, I swear.โ€

Aaron said calmly, โ€œMr. Edwards, this was Kingsley Groupโ€™s decision. It has nothing to do with Mrs. Kingsley.โ€

Walter sneered, โ€œIsnโ€™t Kingsley Group in her hands now?โ€ He had no patience for Aaronโ€™s sly, diplomatic games. Grabbing the water bottle from his bedside table, Walter hurled it at him.

Aaron sidestepped effortlessly, brushing off his jacket with practiced composure before heading for the door. As he left, he offered a measured warning. โ€œMr. Edwards, Mrs. Kingsley is merely a figurehead. She has no real authority in Kingsley Group.โ€

Walter gritted his teeth and snapped, โ€œGet out.โ€ After sending Aaron away, Walter was left with an aching back, a pounding headache, and every part his body felt like it was on fire.

โ€œA figurehead? Amelia really has no power? I donโ€™t believe itโ€ฆ Not even for a second,โ€ Walter grumbled inwardly. But suddenly, his face turned pale. Clutching his chest, he let out a strangled gasp. โ€œAhโ€ฆit hurtsโ€ฆโ€

Sandra, who had just finished her discharge paperwork from the maternity ward and come to check on Walter, was scared by the scene. Panicking, she slammed the emergency button while shouting, โ€œDad, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

Walter gasped, โ€œMy chest hurtsโ€ฆโ€ But before he could say more, he collapsed, unconscious.

The ward descended into chaos. Shortly after, Ameliaโ€™s phone buzzed with a new message. The text read: [Dad had a heart attack because of you. If anything happens to him, Iโ€™ll dig up your momโ€™s grave.]
