Chapter 44

Zachary got excited and chimed in loudly, โ€œExactly. Letโ€™s kidnap her and threaten the Kingsley family.โ€ Just imagining Amelia being under his control made his heart race with excitement.

He pondered, โ€˜I couldnโ€™t get to her yesterday, but today, itโ€™s a fresh start. I have to make her mine and show her my power. If I canโ€™t have her, Iโ€™ll destroy her.โ€™

With Zacharyโ€™s support, Sandra felt confident that this time they wouldnโ€™t fail. Ecstatic, she threw herself into his arms and continued, โ€œThe Kingsley family still wants her to have Landonโ€™s child, donโ€™t they? Whether for their reputation or for Amelia, theyโ€™ll drop the lawsuit and wipe out our debts.โ€

Only Walter seemed uneasy. He furrowed his brow and thought, โ€˜Every time weโ€™ve tried to mess with Amelia, itโ€™s ended in failure. Will it actually work this time?โ€™

โ€œDad, you call her and lure her to the hospital,โ€ Sandra said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

Walter forced a bitter smile. โ€œIโ€™d love to, but she already blocked my number.โ€

โ€œUghโ€ฆโ€ Sandra tried calling from her phone, but it didnโ€™t go through.

Melissa and Zachary quickly followed suit, but unsurprisingly, theyโ€™d all been blocked too. In the end, Walter had to borrow a phone from a nurse to make the call.

Walter spoke weakly, โ€œAmy, Iโ€ฆ Iโ€™m not doing wellโ€ฆ I know I hurt you, and Iโ€™m not asking for your forgiveness. I just want to tell you everything about your mom before I dieโ€ฆโ€

Meanwhile, with the speakerphone on, Ameliaโ€™s lips curled into a disdainful smile as her cold eyes narrowed.

She didnโ€™t believe a single word Walter said and pondered, โ€˜Villains like him have nerves of steelโ€“this little act wonโ€™t break him. Heโ€™s definitely up to something bigger.โ€™

Walter continued, acting frail, โ€œAmy, can you come to the hospital? I just want to talkโ€ฆcough, coughโ€ฆ If you wait any longer, Iโ€™m afraid itโ€™ll be too lateโ€ฆโ€

After playing his part, he finally got the response he wanted when Amelia said, โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll come over.โ€

โ€œGood. Iโ€™ll be waitingโ€ฆโ€ Walterโ€™s eyes lit up with excitement, but he pinched his thigh hard to suppress his emotions and keep up the act. He said, โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Melissa and the others arenโ€™t here. I sent them all away. Itโ€™s just the two of us today. Weโ€™ll have a proper talk about your motherโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Amelia said coldly before hanging up. She then got up, her face expressionless, and began to change her clothes to head out.

Landon had no idea what was going on. Seeing her hang up the phone in silence and start to leave, he lost his temper and demanded in his mind, โ€˜Amelia.โ€™

Amelia replied calmly, โ€œIโ€™m going to the hospital.โ€ Her expression was cold as she packed her thingsโ€“voice recorder, alarm device, and other odd items.

Landon couldnโ€™t stop himself from wondering, โ€˜Where does she even get all this random junk?โ€™ The more he looked, the more something felt off. He rapped his knuckles against the table. โ€˜Amelia, youโ€™re not going.โ€™

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. Iโ€™ve thought it through.โ€ Amelia tried to flash him a reassuring smile, but after a moment, she decided against it and let the smile fade.

She sighed inwardly, โ€˜Heโ€™s good at coming up with plans, sure, but heโ€™s not really worried about me. Iโ€™m just here at Kingsley Villa playing the role of Mrs. Kingsley. Letโ€™s not get ahead of ourselves.โ€™

So all Landon saw was Ameliaโ€™s half-smileโ€“a fleeting, unfinished one that disappeared almost as quickly as it came. That strange, unfinished gesture only made him feel more uneasy. โ€˜At least tell me whatโ€™s going on first,โ€™ he said inwardly.

She replied, โ€œWalter still wonโ€™t pay up, and heโ€™s not willing to sell the house or the shops either. Instead, heโ€™s trying to sweet-talk me into going to the hospital.โ€

Thinking back to what happened with Elizabeth yesterday, Amelia had a pretty good idea of what was coming. She knew this time would be a nastier trap than yesterday. But she wasnโ€™t scared.

Amelia pondered, โ€˜Edwards Group has been pushed this far. Thereโ€™s only one option left for themโ€“kidnapping me and using it to force Kingsley Group to drop the debt collection.

โ€˜Kidnapping carries way harsher consequences than Sandraโ€™s empty threats. If I end up with a few bruises or some bloodshedโ€ฆtheyโ€™ll be looking at serious prison time.โ€™

Landonโ€™s face darkened, his chest heaving with restrained anger. โ€˜What did you promise me last night?โ€ he demanded inwardly, the words heavy with frustration. He wondered irritably, โ€˜Didnโ€™t she swear she wouldnโ€™t take risks? Did one nightโ€™s sleep make her forget everything?โ€

โ€œRelax, Landon. I wonโ€™t embarrass the Kingsley family. I can handle them just fine,โ€ Amelia said with a faint smile, her tone calm and confident as she casually grabbed her purse and walked away.

Landon was furious and thought, โ€˜Am I worried about saving face? No. Iโ€™m worried about you getting hurt.โ€™ He quickly called after her in his mind, โ€˜Ameliaโ€ฆ Amelia, wait.โ€™

But as the sound of Ameliaโ€™s heels grew fainter, he could only stare in frustration. He sighed, thinking, โ€˜What a stubborn woman! Sheโ€™s way too headstrong. How can I just sit back and let her take a risk? I canโ€™t.โ€™

Landon then struggled to pick up his phone and sent a message to Aaron: [She went to the hospital. Thereโ€™s danger.]

An hour later, Amelia arrived at the hospital. Sure enough, Walter was the only one in the ward. When he saw her, his face lit up with joy. โ€œAmy, youโ€™re finally hereโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou seem to be in pretty good spirits,โ€ she remarked coolly as she leaned against the doorway, making no move to come in.

Walter quickly coughed a few times and said, โ€œMaybe this is my last burst of energy before the end.โ€

โ€œSpare me the act. Just tell meโ€“where is my momโ€™s grave?โ€ Amelia cut straight to the point.

Walter sighed, โ€œYour momโ€ฆ Your mom was a pitiful woman. When I met her, she was all alone, standing by the river, ready to end it allโ€ฆ

โ€œShe looked so miserable that I couldnโ€™t just walk away. I brought her home and talked her out of it.โ€

He continued, โ€œWe grew close, and then we had you. Eventually, we got married. But no matter how much I asked, she never wanted to talk about her past. After a while, I stopped asking. It didnโ€™t matter anywayโ€“what was important was that we had a happy life together as a family.โ€

Walter went on and on, but he refused to say where Debra was buried. Amelia, growing impatient, asked, โ€œSo, where exactly is my mother buried?โ€

โ€œAmyโ€ฆcough, coughโ€ฆโ€ He started coughing violently, his frail hand trembling as he reached toward the bedside table. โ€œWaterโ€ฆwaterโ€ฆโ€

At this point in the act, if Amelia didnโ€™t step in, the whole performance would fall apart. She glanced toward the nurseโ€™s station, where a male nurse wearing a large mask gave her a knowing smile.

Taking a deep breath, she finally walked into Walterโ€™s ward and handed him a glass of water. He looked utterly stunned as if he hadnโ€™t expected her to comply. โ€œThank you,โ€ he muttered, almost in disbelief.

โ€œNow can we get to the point?โ€ Amelia pressed, her eyes scanning the room. The private VIP ward was quietโ€“no roommates, no sign of anyone else. She found it odd and wondered, โ€˜Did Walter really send everyone away? Whatโ€™s he up to? Is he just trying to butter me up and do nothing in the end? If so, my planโ€™s going to completely fall apart.โ€™

Just as Ameliaโ€™s frustration was setting in, she felt the cold press of a knife against her waist. A voice hissed behind her. โ€œDonโ€™t move. Donโ€™t scream.โ€ It was Melissa.

Amelia felt a twinge of disappointment and pondered, โ€˜So this whole family is full of โ€œgeniusesโ€œ, and they send the least capable one to play the kidnapper? Seriously?โ€™

โ€œTell the Kingsley family to clear our 100โ€“millionโ€“dollar debt right now, or youโ€™re not leaving this room alive,โ€ Melissa threatened, her tone dripping with malice. Despite this being her first attempt at kidnapping, she didnโ€™t seem the least bit nervous.

Amelia chuckled, โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s not happening.โ€

โ€œOh, really? Then I guess Iโ€™ll just have to make you bleed a little.โ€ Melissaโ€™s voice was icy as she pressed the blade harder.

โ€œGo ahead,โ€ Amelia said nonchalantly, leaning into the knife. The blade caught her side, slicing through her clothes, and blood seeped out.

Melissaโ€™s hand started trembling, her anger boiling inside. She grumbled inwardly, โ€˜This little brat thinks sheโ€™s tougher than me? Fine. Iโ€™ll show her whoโ€™s serious.โ€™
