Chapter 58
Unable to speak, Landon could only communicate with his eyes, trying to tell Gloria that his phone was on the floor and he needed her help to retrieve it. But Gloria was too consumed with worry about Ameliaโs safety to notice his silent plea.
โMy baby, you canโt be in danger. I need to call the police right now.โ Gloriaโs voice trembled with panic.
Left with no choice, Landon resorted to knocking on the table. The sound finally caught Gloriaโs attention. โLandon, what are you trying to tell me?โ
Landon pointed at his phone under the bed.
โWhat is it?โ Gloria walked over and finally spotted the phone on the floor. โRight. How else could he talk to me without a phone?โ she thought to herself as she quickly handed the phone back to Landon.
Opening WhatsApp, Landon froze as he saw the two messages Amelia had sent last night.
Amelia: Since Iโm leaving anyway, I guess thereโs no need to keep up the fake pregnancy act anymore?
Amelia: [Mr. Kingsley, just say the word, and I'll be out of here faster.]
โFake pregnancy? She wasnโt pregnant at all?โ Landon thought, his brows furrowing slightly as he reread her messages twice.
โAmy didnโt take her medicine last night,โ Gloria fretted. โWe thought she came up to take care of you, but she wasnโt even home.โ
The fog in Landonโs mind finally cleared. She wasnโt pregnantโheโd jumped to all the wrong conclusions. His gloomy mood instantly lifted.
โLandon, tell me what happened,โ Gloria urged anxiously.
Taking a deep breath, Landon switched screens on his phone and typed, โI told her to get out.โ
Before he could finish typing, Gloria burst out, โHave you lost your mind? Amy has no one else. Where is she supposed to go in the middle of the night?โ
Landonโs head was throbbing as he typed faster: โWe had a fight.โ
โSo what? You canโt just kick her out because you have a fight with her, right? Sheโs pregnant with your child, for heavenโs sake.โ Gloriaโs eyes widened in disbelief.
Landon replied: โMom, she wonโt go far. I just need to smooth things over, and sheโll come back.โ
โHeh.โ Gloria let out a sardonic laugh. โYou think women are that easy to win over? Let me tell you something. When your father made me angry, I didnโt come home for three years.โ
Landon broke into a cold sweat. โAmelia has a gentle temperament. Surely she wouldnโt follow in Momโs footsteps,โ he thought. But suddenly, panic began to set in. โWhat if she gets so angry she leaves the country? Who else can communicate with me so effortlessly? Whoโs going to handle things at the office?โ
Landon quickly texted Amelia: โWhere are you? Come back immediately.โ
But there was no response. Amelia was still deep in a peaceful slumber, sleeping off her hangover.
โAny word from Amy?โ Gloria asked anxiously.
Landonโs expression darkened as he typed: โNothing.โ
โWhat are we going to do?โ Gloriaโs voice shook with panic.
Landon replied tersely: โFind her.โ
Gloria understood the obvious need to search, but the real question was how. Norava was massive. If Amelia didnโt want to be found, she wouldn't be.
Landon typed: โMom, Iโll handle this. You go take care of your other business.โ
โFine, itโs in your hands,โ Gloria said through gritted teeth. Then she added a threat, โIf you canโt convince Amy to come back, youโre no longer my son.โ
Landon could only stare at his mother in disbelief, speechless.
After Gloria stormed off, Landon immediately texted Aaron. Soon, every hotel in Norava was on high alert, searching for Amy.
It took only thirty minutes before Landon received a precise response from Aaron: โMr. Kingsley, Mrs. Kingsley is staying at the Falcon Hotel.โ
Landon let out a heavy sigh of relief. โThankfully, sheโs still in Norava,โ he thought to himself.
Aaron: โMrs. Kingsley ordered two bottles of wine and a bunch of barbecue last night. She hasnโt left her room since. Her phoneโs turned off, and thereโs no answer at the door. Sheโs probably still passed out from drinking.โ
After a moment of silence, Landon instructed: โStay by her door. Bring her back immediately when she wakes up.โ
Aaron: โYes, Sir.โ
The morning sunlight streamed through the windows, filling the room with a golden glow. Outside, birds perched in the trees, their cheerful chirping providing a stark contrast to the tense atmosphere within.
From his position in bed, Landon couldnโt see the full view outside the window. โBeing helpless is torture,โ he thought to himself. โWhen will I finally recover?โ
While waiting for Amelia to return home, his new automated hospital bed was deliveredโthe one heโd ordered yesterday. Finally, he could choose whether to sit up or lie down on his own, but his heart felt as empty as the house itself. It wasnโt the same without Amelia.
Landon checked the timeโ1 PM. Amelia should be awake by now, he thought.
Just then, another message came through from Aaron: โMr. Kingsley, Mrs. Kingsley refuses to come home. She says youโre already divorced.โ
โShe really knows how to hold a grudge,โ Landon thought bitterly, grinding his teeth. He fired off a text: โWhich courthouse does business in the middle of the night? Tell her to come back immediately.โ
โAaron, you donโt need to check with him anymore,โ Amelia said to herself. โNo work, no one to answer to. Weโre done,โ she thought. Amelia leaned against the doorframe. โThis is the life,โ she thought.
โMrs. Kingsley, please donโt put me in this position,โ Aaron pleaded with an awkward smile. โWhy donโt you pack up and head home?โ
โHumph,โ Amelia scoffed. โLandon and I are done. Thereโs nothing between us anymore.โ
โBut youโre still legally married,โ Aaron pointed out with a knowing smile. โThe divorce isnโt final yet.โ
โThatโs just paperwork. Gloria will handle it,โ Amelia dismissed his concern. โWe didnโt even need to be there for the marriage registration. The divorce will be even simpler.โ With that, she shut the door in his face. โAaron, leave now, or Iโm calling the police.โ
Aaron rubbed his nose in resignation and decided to leave. It wasnโt the police threat that bothered him. He was more concerned about the divorce scandal becoming public knowledge and making headlines.
Just after Aaron left, the door across the hall opened. Zachary stood there in his bathrobe, staring at Ameliaโs apartment with keen interest. โSo Amelia and Landon are getting divorced?โ he thought, a sly smile spreading across his face. โIโve been waiting for this day.โ
His eyes lit up with excitement. After checking that the hallway was clear, he strode over and knocked on her door.
โIโm calling the police,โ Amelia shouted from inside, assuming it was Aaron again.
But Zachary couldnโt care less about her threats.
โAmy, it really is you.โ Zachary lunged forward.
Ameliaโs face went pale as she tried to stem the door shut, but it was too late.
โGet off me, you jerk!โ Amelia struggled with all her might. Zachary possessed a physical strengthโthe natural advantage he had as a manโthat was overwhelming.
โHelp! Somebody help me!โ Amelia screamed, struggling against his grip as she tried to call out. In one fluid motion, Zachary kept her restrained while kicking the door shut behind them. โCalm down, Amy.โ
โYou better back off,โ Amelia warned, trying to sound tough despite the panic rising in her throat.
This is the most exclusive hotel in Norava. You canโt even get to the presidential suite floor without a key card frantically. Was he following me?
โI heard your conversation with Aaron,โ Zachary said with a smirk. โSo things have fallen apart between you and Landon.โ
Ameliaโs heart sank at this unfortunate timing. She tried to downplay the situation. โWe just had an argument.โ "Didnโt you persuade me to come home?"
โYet you didnโt go back.โ Zacharyโs eyes gleamed with predatory intent as he gazed down at her. โAmy, I knew you still love me.
