Chapter 70
โHenry, you just wonโt rest until you pin some crime on me, will you?โ A mocking smile played across Ameliaโs lips. โAt your age, isnโt it a bit pathetic to be so obsessed with taking down someone young enough to be your daughter? No wonder your sons canโt find a wife.โ
โYou little bastardโโ Henryโs face flushed red with anger. โIโm simply addressing the facts here.โ
His two sons, Patrick and Kenneth, had been constant sources of disappointment. They spent their days wasting time with women in questionable pubs, showing no interest in settling down with respectable partners.
Henry knew that if he had a grandson, he could use that leverage perfectly.
Amelia turned to Lanny. โYouโre Lanny, right?โ
โIsnโt that what youโve always called me?โ Lanny shot back cleverly.
Donna.
โPoor thing,โ Amelia thought. โHeโs terrified, but at least his brainโs still functioning.โ She pressed on, โAlright then, when was the last time we slept together?โ
โYesterโno, today,โ Lanny stumbled, changing his answer mid-sentence. โThe more recent, the more believable, right?โ he thought.
Even without the pregnancy scandal, the Kingsleys would never tolerate a woman who cheated on their son. As long as Lannyโs testimony got Amelia kicked out, heโd be rewarded handsomely.
โAnd where exactly did this happen?โ Amelia asked.
Lannyโs confidence wavered as he shot a panicked glance at Henry, silently pleading for help.
Henry collected his thoughts, taking a moment before nodding at him. He knew Ameliaโs life was strictly regimented between work and home. Since an affair at home seemed unlikely, it had to be at the office.
โThe office,โ Lanny stammered.
โMorning or afternoon?โ Amelia pressed.
โAโAfternoon.โ Lanny forced out, trying to maintain his composure.
Amelia smiled, โI wasnโt even at the office this afternoon.โ
Both Lanny and Henry were dumbstruck. In their minds, Amelia was the picture of diligence, never leaving before closing time. The idea that she wouldnโt be at work seemed impossible.
โButler,โ Amelia called out, โbring me the dashcam footage from my car.โ Her seemingly unrelated request caught everyone off guard.
The butler hurried off, and understanding dawned on Gloriaโs face. โYes, the dashcam footage will show whether Amy was at the office or not.โ
Henry and Lanny exchanged panicked looks, realizing theyโd backed themselves into a corner. Theyโd been so confident in their accusations that theyโd left themselves no room for backtracking.
The butler returned quickly with the dashcam, handing it to Gloria. After reviewing the footage, she exploded, โJust as I thought, youโre both lying. Amy left the office around eleven this morning.โ
โIโI made a mistake,โ Lanny scrambled to explain. โWe werenโt at the office. I was somewhere else.โ
โOh? Where exactly?โ Gloria challenged, pointing at the footage. โAmy was in Greenville visiting my friend today. Are you telling me you were in Greenville too?โ
Lanny, whoโd moved here from out of state, had no clue about Greenville. If that turned out to be another place Gloria had made up, heโd only be digging himself into a deeper hole.
Unable to maintain his web of lies any longer, he hung his head in defeat.
โHenry, this whole charade is just your attempt to drive a wedge between us, isnโt it?โ Gloriaโs voice thundered with anger. โFor Landonโs fatherโs sake Iโll let this slideโbut get out. And donโt come back.โ
With no leg left to stand on, Henry turned his fury on Lanny, giving him a rough shove. โYou little brat, you played me too.โ
โIโm sorry, I wasnโt thinking straight when I made up those lies,โ Lanny mumbled.
โGet out.โ Henry grabbed Lanny by the collar and stormed out, cursing under his breath.
Gloria and Amelia exchanged knowing looks. They both knew Henry had been pulling the strings all along.
With Donna backing Henry, they werenโt strong enough to challenge him yet. All they could do was bide their time until Landon recovered. Then theyโd settle the score.
โAmy, Iโm so sorry.โ Gloriaโs voice cracked with emotion, her eyes welling up with tears. โI feel so helpless. Even knowing what heโs done to you, I canโt stand up to him.โ
โGrandma treats Henry like her precious golden child,โ Amelia said, handing Gloria a tissue. โIf we confront him today, Grandmaโll be in the hospital tomorrow, claiming weโre trying to infuriate her to death.โ Amelia paused and then added softly, โGloria, itโs okay. We just need to hold on a little longer. Landonโs getting better.โ
โAmy, thank you for understanding.โ Gloria nodded tearfully.
โYou know, Gloria, itโs actually a blessing I wasnโt pregnant.โ Amelia reflected, a shiver running down her spine. โHenry would have tampered with the paternity test results at the hospital. And then I wouldnโt just lose the babyโฆโ Her voice trailed off. โIโd also lose my rights as a mother.โ
Gloria held Amelia tighter, her anger about the fake pregnancy dissolving into concern for Amelia.
โGloria, are you angry?โ Amelia said softly. โThe fake pregnancyโฆ It was actually Landonโs idea. He had Dr. Harrington bring the medication that night.โ
Gloria remained silent. If Landon didnโt want children, there wasnโt much she could do about it. Given that she couldnโt protect Amelia right now, maybe holding off on having kids was for the best.
โAmy, sweetheart,โ Gloria finally said, โI wonโt pressure you two anymore. I just want you both to be happy. Thatโs what matters most.โ
โThank you,โ Amelia smiled, feeling a weight lift from her shoulders. The suffocating pressure to have a baby was finally gone.
After spending time consoling each other, Amelia finally left Gloria and returned to her room.
Landon set down his phone with visible irritation. โWhy didnโt you call the police?โ he demanded.
โI wanted to protect the Kingsley familyโs reputation,โ Amelia replied, shrugging off her jacket and pouring herself a glass of water.
โI donโt care about that,โ Landon snapped, his expression hardening with anger.
What Amelia hadnโt mentioned was her other reason. She refused to give Zachary and Sandra the satisfaction of seeing her humiliated within the family.
โIt was just some domestic trivia, and I handled it,โ Amelia said, setting down her glass and crossing her legs elegantly. โLandon, your motherโs carrying the weight of this household on her shoulders. You need to get better soon, for her sake.โ
Landon fell silent, his chest heaving with emotion as his eyes slowly filled with a dangerous glint. He knew Gloria had always been shelteredโpampered by his father when he was alive, and after his death, it had fallen to Landon to take care of her.
Now, the fragile Gloria had to put on a brave face for his sake, fighting to keep both him and the company alive. If it hadnโt been for that accident, he would never have allowed Gloria to endure such humiliation.
โLandon, youโre a victim too. Stop blaming yourself,โ Amelia said softly, picking up on his mood.
Landon looked at her, feeling a wave of gratitude wash over him. Ameliaโs appearance in his life was nothing short of miraculousโa gift from above when he needed it most.
If Amelia hadnโt been able to sense his thoughts and brought him home before Henry could make his move, Landon might never have returned. And if Amelia hadnโt stepped in to run the company in his place, Henry would have seized control long ago.
โAmelia, thank you,โ Landon said softly, those simple words carrying the weight of everything he couldnโt express.
โWell, well,โ Amelia teased, โyouโre finally acknowledging my contribution. Thatโs a first.โ
โIโll be there for you too,โ Landon silently promised. Once he recovered, he would help her uncover the truth about Debraโs death and origins.
Given Debraโs apparent wealth, she was most likely a wealthy heiress who had ended up on the streets due to her mental illness. If he could help Amelia find Debraโs real family, perhaps it would fill that void of familial connection sheโd always yearned for.
โIโm holding you to that, Landon,โ Amelia said with a playful smile, willing to go along with his mood. She had no way of knowing then that his simple expression of gratitude would completely transform her life.
โBy the way,โ Amelia added thoughtfully, โHenryโs really hung up about you having an heir. Make sure you protect her wellโthe woman carrying your child.โ
