Chapter 72

Kingsley Group headquarters bustled with over two thousand employees. The cafeteria was massive and divided into several distinct sections. Amelia and Patrick made their way through the lunchtime rush.

Wherever Amelia went, the employees gave her a warm welcome. Patrick, on the other hand, reveled in the attention, waving to everyone like a politician on the campaign trail. Dressed in a sharp suit, he exuded an air of authority.

His resemblance to Landon was striking, and those who didnโ€™t know him well often mistook him for the CEO. One employee even approached them, beaming, โ€œMr. Kingsley, youโ€™re finally back on your feet. Congratulations.โ€

โ€œIndeed,โ€ Patrick replied with a grin, making no effort to correct the man.

โ€œI should clarify,โ€ Amelia cut in, โ€œthis is Patrick, Landonโ€™s cousin.โ€

A collective โ€œOhโ€ rippled through the crowd, followed by disappointed murmurs. โ€œI thought Mr. Kingsley had recovered,โ€ someone whispered.

โ€œThree months in a comaโ€ฆโ€ An employee shook his head. โ€œWhat are the chances heโ€™ll wake up at this point?โ€

A senior staff member leaned in, lowering his voice. โ€œSlim to none, Iโ€™d say. Why else would they send Patrick to oversee things?โ€

โ€œSo, the companyโ€™s changing hands?โ€ another employee frowned and then quickly added. โ€œThough honestly, I wouldnโ€™t mind if Mrs. Kingsley stayed in charge.โ€

It finally dawned on Amelia why Patrick had insisted on joining her in the cafeteria. He was making a statement, marking his territory. The worst part was that she couldnโ€™t even tell anyone that Landon was already awake and recovering.

โ€œLetโ€™s just get this over with,โ€ Aaron muttered under his breath. โ€œFeed him and send him packing.โ€

โ€œWhy is everyone so on edge around him?โ€ Amelia asked, keeping her voice low.

Aaronโ€™s face darkened. โ€œHeโ€™sโ€ฆ a bit twisted.โ€

โ€œCare to elaborate?โ€ Amelia arched an eyebrow.

โ€œItโ€™s complicated.โ€ Aaron hesitated, glancing around. โ€œIโ€™ll fill you in on the details later.โ€

โ€œHenryโ€™s people are absolutely shameless,โ€ Amelia muttered under her breath, her teeth practically grinding together. Despite her fury, she forced a smile, maintaining her composure in the public setting. โ€˜Oh, for crying out loud,โ€™ she thought, โ€˜will someone please come and take this Patrick away?โ€™

Finally reaching the private dining area, Amelia focused solely on her lunch, eating in silence.

โ€œAmelia, you work so hard managing the company. You should eat more,โ€ Patrick said with a smile, sliding a plate of meat to her.

Amelia set down her utensils and pushed the plate away. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I have a bit of a thing about germs.โ€

A flicker of coldness crossed Patrickโ€™s eyes but quickly vanished. โ€œI havenโ€™t touched that food.โ€

โ€œStill, no thank you.โ€ Amelia shook her head, her appetite completely gone. โ€œMr. Patrick, you go ahead and eat. Iโ€™m going to get back to work.โ€

Amelia got up and left, Aaron and Brooke trailing behind her. Patrick, left alone in the small dining room, didnโ€™t seem fazed. He began to leisurely enjoy the lunch prepared by the cafeteria staff.

Even though the CEOโ€™s meal was no different from anyone elseโ€™s, it held a special significance for Patrick. It had been years since heโ€™d tasted Kingsley Groupโ€™s cafeteria food.

Ever since Landon took the helm of Kingsley Group, Henry and his family barely had a foot in the door. Now, with Landon in a coma, Patrick wasnโ€™t about to let Amelia share power with any of them.

Chapter 72

Rhea Rollins, the restaurantโ€™s manager, hovered nearby.

Patrick finally set down his utensils after a long meal and glanced at Rhea. โ€œMs. Rollins.โ€

โ€œMr. Kingsley, how can I help you?โ€ Rhea stepped forward attentively.

โ€œThe food was excellent. Iโ€™m finished here,โ€ Patrick declared.

Rhea let out a subtle sigh of relief. โ€œVery good, Mr. Kingsley.โ€

โ€œI heard your father is quite ill,โ€ Patrick inquired.

Rheaโ€™s head shot up in surprise. Patrick pulled a card from his pocket and slipped it under his napkin. โ€œTake good care of him.โ€

Rheaโ€™s heart pounded like a drum. She waited until Patrick was out of sight before daring to approach. โ€˜Did Mr. Kingsley give me this card and ask about my father because heโ€™s interested in me?โ€™ she wondered.

A flush crept up Rheaโ€™s neck, flooding her cheeks. Excitement thrummed through her veins. She felt like sheโ€™d finally struck gold.

Making sure no one was watching, Rhea tucked the card away and pulled out a small mirror. โ€œI really am beautiful,โ€ she murmured, admiring her reflection. And it was true.

She was strikingly attractive, but her fatherโ€™s long illness had scared off potential suitors. Now, finally, a man had taken notice. And it was not just any man, but Patrick, the wealthy and powerful newcomer.

While Rhea was bursting with glee, Aaron was in his office giving Amelia the lowdown on Patrickโ€™s peculiarities. โ€œHeโ€™s bisexual and is into some pretty kinky stuff. Mr. Kingsley has reprimanded him a few times about it. Brooke was even one of his targets, which is why sheโ€™s so wary of him.โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t Brooke beat him up?โ€ Amelia asked, incredulous.

โ€œShe canโ€™t,โ€ Aaron sighed. โ€œPatrickโ€™s a legitimate badass, not like his pushover brother Kenneth.โ€

Amelia felt a shiver crawl down her spine. โ€˜If even Brooke canโ€™t take him, how strong is he?โ€™ she thought. โ€˜If I ever crossed Patrick alone, I wouldnโ€™t stand a chance.โ€™

The thought terrified her. Amelia immediately bought two cans of pepper spray for good measure.

โ€œMrs. Kingsley, Mr. Patrick has made his move.โ€ Tiana Myers, a secretary, entered the office, a worried expression creasing her face. She held a tablet displaying surveillance footage from the staff cafeteriaโ€“Patrick, in the act of bribing Rhea.

โ€œHeโ€™s trying to tamper with your food?โ€ Aaronโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œMrs. Kingsley, you absolutely cannot eat anything from the cafeteria from now on.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ Amelia murmured, her grip tightening around her pen, her face pale. Fear coiled in her stomach.

โ€œMrs. Kingsley, shall I take care of Rhea?โ€ Tiana asked.

โ€œNo,โ€ Amelia said, shaking her head and taking a deep breath to steady herself. โ€œGetting rid of Rhea wonโ€™t solve the problem. Heโ€™ll just find someone else.โ€

โ€œUnderstood. Iโ€™ll be extra vigilant and keep an eye out for anything suspicious,โ€ Tiana assured her. A woman nearing forty, she was a longโ€“time employee of Kingsley Group and fiercely loyal.

With Tiana taking charge, Amelia felt a wave of relief wash over her. โ€œThank you so much,โ€ she said sincerely.

โ€œMrs. Kingsley,โ€ Aaron interjected, his brow furrowed with worry. โ€œShouldnโ€™t we try to contact Mr. Kingsley about this?โ€

Amelia considered this for a moment. โ€œYes, youโ€™re right.โ€

Landonโ€™s reply came quickly: [Stay away from him. Refuse all contact. Keep Brooke with you at all times.]

It was clear that even Landon was wary of Patrick. Amelia hadnโ€™t felt this strong a sense of danger since she first married into the Kingsley family.

Amelia couldnโ€™t focus on her work that afternoon, her mind a whirlwind of anxieties. She decided to head home early. Gloria, having already learned of Patrickโ€™s return through Landon, was also on high alert.

โ€œAmy, if youโ€™re scared, just donโ€™t go back to the office,โ€ Gloria said, her voice laced with concern.

โ€œSomeone needs to hold down the fort,โ€ Amelia replied with a wry smile, glancing at Landon.

Landon beckoned her over. She obediently approached, and he immediately took her hand.

โ€˜Donโ€™t worry. Heโ€™s only back because of the bet,โ€™ Landon said in his mind.

Ameliaโ€™s eyes widened in surprise. โ€œBut he bribed someone at the restaurant,โ€ she blurted out, forgetting for a moment that their conversation was private.

โ€œAmy, who are you talking to?โ€ Gloria asked, her brow furrowed in confusion. Ameliaโ€™s responses sounded like she was having a conversation, but Gloria hadnโ€™t seen anyone else speak.

Gloria stared intently at Landon, suspicious that he had somehow managed to speak without her noticing. Frustration gnawed at her.

โ€œJustโ€ฆletting my imagination run wild, I guess,โ€ Amelia said, blinking innocently, though her eyes betrayed a hint of guilt. โ€œGloria, Patrick came to the office today and insisted on having lunch with me. I took him to the cafeteria, and he bribed the manager.โ€

โ€œThat slimy snake. Henryโ€™s family is rotten to the core,โ€ Gloria fumed. โ€œFrom now on, be extra careful with what you eat at the office. Donโ€™t touch anything unless itโ€™s prepared by Tiana or the other trusted staff.โ€

โ€œOkay, Gloria. I will,โ€ Amelia said with a nod. โ€œActually, Iโ€™m feeling thirsty. Could you get some apple juice?โ€

โ€œOf course, sweetie,โ€ Gloria smiled and headed off to fetch the juice.

Amelia pretended she wanted some juice, sending Gloria away. Then she crouched beside Landon, gently massaging his leg muscles. โ€œIs there any way to get rid of him?โ€ she asked.
