Chapter 63

Mrs. Bennett, though angry, felt more sorry for Lauren. She speculated that Lauren might have encountered difficulties, forcing her into Herman's mistress role. It was challenging for a beautiful woman to ascend the social ladder without family support. "Dad," Sally said, pouring him a cup of tea and patting his back, "Don't be angry. Please believe Lauren. Maybe it's not true at all. Anger isn't good for your health."

Mr. Bennett Jr. looked at Sally, his anger subsiding slightly. He thought, "Sally is a wonderful daughter! She's smart and considerate!" Regarding Lauren, he mused, "I shouldn't have taken her back. She's a disgrace! I'll lose face because of her!"

Thinking of Lauren's luxury car, he exclaimed disgustedly, "But she was sitting in a luxury car! She's just a student. How could she afford it? Even if it's not Herman's, it must belong to someone else."

Sally, after a moment's thought, explained, "Maybe she bought it herself. Didn't Grandpa give her company shares?" "Silly girl," Mr. Bennett Jr. chuckled, patting her shoulder. "Shares aren't cash. I know your mother gave her a car and I gave her a credit card, but that's definitely not enough for a car like that."

Sally knew this; she merely feigned concern for Lauren to improve her own image.

Jeffery, seated on the sofa, worked on his phone. His mother's panicked call had summoned him home, leading him to believe something serious had occurred; it proved to be merely a rumor. He wanted to leave immediately, but his grandfather hadn't yet descended, so he remained.

After a while, Mr. Bennett Sr. arrived via elevator. His legs were worsening, requiring assistance. "Father," Mr. Bennett Jr. said, supporting his father and holding his phone, "I've asked someone to investigate."

Mr. Bennett Sr. looked at his son quietly, sighing. "Aren't you afraid if the Shaw family learns of this?"

"This isn't a business matter, but it's related to the Bennett family's reputation, so I must be cautious," Mr. Bennett Jr. replied, seemingly convinced Lauren was Herman's mistress and eager to punish her.

Mr. Bennett Sr., without directly scolding him, said, "Call Lauren back. After all, she's family, and we should ask her about this first."

"Will she tell us the truth?" Mr. Bennett Jr. frowned, insisting, "I'm afraid she'll deny it!"

Mr. Bennett Sr., losing patience, struck Mr. Bennett Jr. hard with his crutch. "She's your daughter! How can you not believe her?"

This angered Mr. Bennett Jr. further. He believed he was protecting the Bennett family's reputation. If Lauren truly was Herman's mistress, she would shame the entire family. Mr. Bennett Sr., disagreeing, instructed the housekeeper to take his phone and decided to call Lauren himself. At least, they should talk first. The call was answered after a considerable wait.
