Chapter 7

Jeffrey Bennett stood beside Mrs. Bennett. Seeing his mother's excitement, he stepped forward, took the phone, and said to Wendy, "Explain now!"

Hearing a male voice, Wendy grew more anxious, recognizing it as Mr. Bennett's eldest son.

Wendy's crying prompted Jeffrey to furrow his handsome brows. "Where are you?" he asked, his voice gentle and soothing, instantly calming Wendy.

"I'm at the intersection of Victory Road," Wendy replied.

"Okay," Jeffrey nodded, signaling an assistant to find Wendy immediately. Standing in the center of the room, Jeffrey exuded an aura of calm authority, giving the rest of the Bennett family a sense of reassurance.

"When did Lauren disappear?" Jeffrey asked.

"About 7:10 p.m."

"Why did she get off, and where did she go after leaving the car?"

Wendy bit her lip. "The car was broken, so she took the subway."

"Subway?" Jeffrey asked incredulously. "You let her take the subway alone?"

Wendy's expression changed. "I I needed to repair the car."

Jeffrey was impatient. "Why didn't you leave your business card and deal with it later?" Something was clearly wrong.

Wendy shouldn't have left Lauren alone after a minor accident. It was a serious lapse in judgment for an assistant.

Jeffrey's gentle demeanor turned grim. "Who told you to frame Lauren? Who else is involved? Tell me now! If anything happens to Lauren, you'll be in serious trouble."

Wendy, unable to cope, confessed everything.

Hearing Monica's name, Jeffrey frowned and looked at Monica behind Sally. Monica, terrified, waved her hands. "Not me! I know nothing! I don't know where Lauren is. I just told her to take the subway."

Mrs. Bennett, surprised by Monica's involvement, stared intently at her.

Sally reacted swiftly, staring at Monica in shock. "Why did you let Lauren take the subway? She was wearing a dress! It must have been incredibly inconvenient."

Sally's comment gave Monica an idea. If she explained it properly, this could be minimized.

"It's my fault!" Monica quickly explained. "I just wanted to tease her because she's been bullying Sally. I was angry, but I didn't make her disappear. She didn't take the subway at all!"

Mrs. Bennett was speechless with anger, pointing at Monica for a long time. How could she do this to Lauren? she thought.

Seeing Mrs. Bennett seemed to believe Monica, Sally glanced at Jeffrey, who remained impassive. "You made a mistake, Monica," Sally said, "so I can't keep you. But finding Lauren is the priority. We'll deal with you later."

It was almost 8:00 p.m., and the Bennetts hurried downstairs to explain Lauren's absence to the guests.

Several family members' hasty departure had already sparked speculation amongst the guests. Lauren's continued absence was unsettling.

Sandy Effie sat apart, swirling red wine in his glass.

A man approached. "Your fiancée is about to appear. Aren't you going to see her?"
