Ralph rose, stating confidently, "I believe you won't find a better candidate than myself." He wasn't entirely confident, but he knew Heather couldn't find a more suitable candidate. He also knew she wouldn't have offered if better options existed. The thirty percent share now felt insufficient.
If Heather can make such an offer so readily, the secret handbook is far more valuable. However, there's no rush to counter. Once I possess it, I'll be in a stronger negotiating position. I'll settle the score for today's injuries and humiliation!
He turned to leave, then paused, glancing back at Heather. His gaze lingered on her hand, cradling a cup.
Made uneasy by his scrutiny, Heather bristled. "What is it now?"
"Where's the ring I gave you?" Though not expensive, he'd carefully chosen it. Seeing she wasn't wearing it, he found her unpredictable.
"Oh," Heather glanced at her finger, recalling the ring she'd crushed—Hannah's treasured possession. She said indifferently, "It was too inexpensive, and I accidentally dropped it. Why? Are you being petty? Or do you want compensation?"
Ralph clenched his fists, his voice grave. "No need! It wasn't costly, and if you discarded it, so be it. At least we're even."
He left.
Heather unconcerned, rubbed her finger. Open discussion should have eased her, yet she remained unhappy.
That wretched girl! Yes, it's her. She acted without my permission, and it's affecting my mood! She headed for the basement.
Pausing at the door, she reached for the handle. It was unlocked; Hannah wouldn't dare leave after Heather's instructions. She couldn't believe the usually obedient girl had defied her yesterday.
Heather entered. A small window cast dim light into the musty basement.
She sneezed, then stared, stunned. The room was empty.
"Impossible!"
Her gaze fell upon a figure cowering in the shadows, arms wrapped around knees. Heather would have missed her had she not looked carefully. Hannah stared lifelessly at the floor, a soulless puppet.
The sight of Hannah upset Heather.
