“Lily, the experiment has progressed significantly,” Thompson said earnestly. “Are you truly giving up now? This project is your work as much as mine. You were initially optimistic, and La Beauté Group has invested substantially. Wouldn’t it be a waste to abandon it now?”

He was devastated by her decision, his reluctance to give up despite pressure from his superiors. His simple idea had blossomed to the brink of success; he felt victory was within reach, and nothing could stop him.

Lily was touched by his plea. Though silent, her brow furrowed. She valued the project; otherwise, she wouldn't have dedicated herself so completely. However, a disturbing discovery had changed everything: poisonous herbs were being used in the experiment.

The project’s unclear purpose further fueled her reluctance. She would continue only if the institute ceased using poisonous herbs and focused on creating calming, relaxing fragrances. The question remained: would Thompson, and more importantly, they, agree?

Before Lily could speak, another voice echoed, “Professor Thompson.”

She turned, surprised to see Mike, a perfunctory grin on his face.

“Lily, we meet again.” He smoothly seated himself beside her.

Lily shifted away, uncomfortable. Mike then addressed Thompson. “Don't worry about the funds. My company has allocated the necessary capital; it will arrive within 48 hours. However…” His eyes darkened. “I’m unsure if your team’s internal issues are resolved. When can we resume the experiment?”

Although directed at Thompson, his gaze fell on Lily.

“Mr. Corden, you’re opportunistic,” Lily remarked, surprised by his intervention. She knew of his desire to participate, but his quiet deal with Thompson was unexpected. Russell Group’s withdrawal was immediately followed by his company’s funding.

“One must be astute in business,” he smiled. “Alexander’s better at it than I am. What’s wrong? Is your refusal due to my involvement in your husband's business?”

“My passive-aggressive tactics are ineffective against me,” Lily replied lightly. Turning to Thompson, she added, “Professor Thompson, I’ve heard you, but I need time to consider. Let's end this for now. I have other commitments.”
