Chapter 1397

After sitting down with a glass of water, Anastasia sighed. "I didn't feel them making the air better, or feel refreshed," she said. "Aunt Maria, you've watched me grow up. Have I ever looked refreshed to you?"

Maria remained silent.

"I feel groggy every day, always on the verge of falling asleep. When I'm awake, I'm overwhelmed with cravings. How can someone like me ever sit comfortably in the living room? I can barely feel happiness." Anastasia sighed again, shaking her head before sipping her water.

"Tasia, you shouldn't think that way," Maria said anxiously. "Even though you're not in the best shape, the miracle doctor will cure you. He even gave you prescriptions. Which reminds me, have you taken them today?"

Anastasia glanced at her aunt, avoiding the question. "Aunt Maria, do you think any medication can truly help me, my body?"

Maria was shocked. "Of course! The miracle doctor said you'll be fine. Don't think too much and just listen to him. Remember to take your medicine!"

She sat on the sofa, feeling a little uncomfortable, likely due to the absence of the plants she was accustomed to. The sudden change of environment felt unsettling. She grabbed a cushion and hugged it, feeling a chill in the room. Even Anastasia's gaze felt cold.

'What's going on?' Maria thought.

"Tasia, have you taken your medicine today?" Maria asked again. Receiving no response, she turned to a nearby housekeeper, but Anastasia spoke first.

"Aunt Maria, why is it important if I took the medicine or not? I'm already like this anyway. The miracle doctor said I was poisoned. Even if the medicine helps, wouldn't I get poisoned again if I don't find the culprit? This person has been poisoning me unconsciously for so many years. It must be someone close to meโ€”someone I know very well. If I don't find out who they are, it doesn't make a difference whether I take the medication or not."

Anastasia spoke slowly, looking directly at Maria. Honestly, she didn't suspect her aunt. Maria had worked tirelessly to find a doctor for her, even when Anastasia refused. Even if Maria wanted to curry favor with Cameron, poisoning Anastasia seemed superfluous. And if Maria were so confident the doctor wouldn't detect the poison, why bother inviting him? The puzzle pieces didn't fit. She waited tentatively for Maria's reaction.

Maria agreed. "That's right. We should find out who is behind this! Who could poison you without being discovered? We must look into the housekeepers. We must also tell your father so he can send someone to investigate. This is horrible!"

Her righteous indignation seemed genuine, without pretense. Her agreement to help, devoid of panic or worry, puzzled Anastasia.

Anastasia hoped it wasn't her aunt. After all, her uncle and aunt were her closest relatives besides her father, the only people she considered family. Knowing her aunt was likely innocent brought relief, but also lingering questions.
