Chapter 1494

"I know you're worried, Lily, but this situation is beyond your control," Mike replied. "Besides, you won't accomplish your goal today."

Lily frowned. "Mike, I don't understand your involvement with them. Shouldn't you consider your son? What kind of father do you want him to have?" Nick's mother was absent; if his father was implicated in criminal activity, what kind of self-image would the boy develop?

Mike sighed, visibly moved. "Lily, what would you do if Galen were in danger?"

"Anything to save him," she answered instantly.

"Even if it cost your life?"

"I'd give my life for him!" She didn't hesitate. As a mother, she would willingly sacrifice herself for her child.

"What if someone else's life was involved?"

She paused. She would readily sacrifice herself, but another person? The thought hadn't occurred to her. She admitted to herself the inherent selfishness of humanity; she didn't need to care about strangers. Her son was paramount.

Yet, sacrificing another's life for her son seemed equally impossible.

"Don't ask such pointless hypothetical questions," she said, a touch angrily, sensing his attempt to distract her.

"They seem pointless because you're not facing this reality. Would you still think so if it were real?" Mike's expression remained impassive; Lily couldn't decipher his thoughts.

"All right. If you don't leave now, I can't guarantee your safety! Think of your children, those waiting for you at home. For them, you must stay alive!" He turned away.

Lily could easily restrain him, use him as a hostage. But she didn't. Mike was right. Would that solve anything? His withdrawal, La Beaute Group's divestment, Professor Thompson's death, and Austin's disappearance hadn't hindered the research institute. Mike Cordon was inconsequential to them.

She clenched her fists, gritted her teeth, and said, "I have another question."

"What is it?" Mike replied without turning.

"Where's Austin? Is heโ€ฆ" She trailed off, fearing the answer. Was Austin dead, like Professor Thompson?

"While the lab's activities aren't ethical, no one is blatantly murdered there," Mike replied lightly. "Regarding your concern, I believe he's safe. For now, at least."

"I understand." Though indirect, she understood his implication and nodded.

"I hope you remember your role as a father, whatever you've faced, and set a good example for your children."

Mike remained silent, a lonely figure.
