"You don't think I'm lying, do you?"
Looking over his shoulder, Mike offered a half-smile. Austin, lips pursed, remained silent. He wasn't sure if Mike was deceiving him or offering genuine help, but anyone would cling to hope, however slim. No one would willingly give up, even with a minuscule chance of survival. The thought, Everyone strives to live, echoed in his mind. Even odds of one in ten thousand wouldn't deter him.
Seeing Austin's silence, Mike gave a bland smile, turned, casually shoved his hands in his pockets, and slightly lifted his head. "If, and only if, you're lucky enough to escape, I'm sure you won't spare them, right?"
Without waiting for a reply, Mike left, the door clicking shut behind him, leaving a heavy silence. This time, however, Austin's movement to sit on the bed seemed agonizingly slow, like a corpse. Yet, invigorated by a flicker of hope, he sat up, gazed at the pill in his hand, and brought it closer to his nose to sniff it. His sensitivity to medication remained. After sniffing, he lowered his hand, clutching the pill tightly. I wish… to escape!
Alexander departed only after donning a hazmat suit and being placed in an isolation hood. The swift, secret transfer, handled confidentially by Alexander's men, ensured few knew of his movement. He had come and gone so quickly, he might as well have been a ghost. Lily remained at his side the entire time, their gloved hands clasped tightly together. Dr. Blanc observed, silent. Silence prevailed until they reached X Department.
Despite the state-of-the-art equipment and the startling scene, Alexander showed no surprise, not even a glance around. He remained composed and tranquil, like someone accustomed to such settings. They had no time to explain their location, purpose, or future plans, but he asked nothing, simply following them. He trusted his wife.
"Where do you plan to place him?" Lily asked, looking at Dr. Blanc.
Dr. Blanc pointed upstairs. "Due to Mr. Russell's special status, he will be in the VIP ward on level two. It's well-equipped, so don't worry. He won't be mistreated."
"There's even a single-occupancy VIP ward?" Lily's astonishment was evident. She hadn't known.
