Chapter 1723
They soon arrived at Olivia's apartment building. Lily, familiar with the area, hesitated before exiting the car. "Should I call Olivia to let her know we're coming?" she suggested.
Alexander shook his head. "If you call, we might not see them."
"Why?" Lily asked, taken aback.
"It's best to ask them later," Alexander replied, pointing toward the upper floors. He opened the car door, and they ascended without their bodyguards.
Standing before Olivia's door, Lily remained puzzled by Alexander's cryptic warning. She wondered why a phone call would prevent them from seeing the couple, especially considering Olivia's recent silence. Their communication had dwindled, their infrequent contact limited to emailsโa stark contrast to their previous interactions.
She pressed the doorbell. After several presses, Olivia's voice finally called out, "Who is it?"
Alexander glanced at Lily, prompting her to clear her throat. "Olivia, it's me! I'm here to see you, Alex andโฆ" She started, then hesitated, meeting Alexander's gaze. "Alex and I are worried about you. Open the door. I need to talk to you."
Silence followed. "Olivia?" Lily called again.
"Hold on," Olivia responded.
The delay in opening the door heightened Lily's confusion. Finally, the door creaked open, revealing a gaunt Olivia, her weight loss accentuating her pregnancy. Lily's heart sank at her friend's appearance.
"How come you've lost so much weight? Haven't you been resting properly?" Lily asked.
Olivia cleared her throat. "Lily, why are you here?" her response was clipped and formal.
Lily was baffled by Olivia's distant manner. "Can't I visit you? Since when has it become so formal between us? What's wrong? You haven't contacted me lately, and the last timeโ"
Oliviaโs eyes widened as she saw Alexander. She instinctively tried to close the door, but Lily reacted swiftly, preventing her.
"Olivia, something's wrong. Tell me what's happening. Don't beat around the bush; you know I hate it!" Lily's frustration mounted. She could handle Olivia's temper tantrums, even her yelling, but this veiled distress was unbearable. Seeing Lily's growing agitation, and unable to close the door, Olivia relented, stepping aside to allow them entry.
