The institute's research into numerous poisons, and their human experimentation, as evidenced by the data, demonstrated considerable expertise among their researchers. Yet, Lily couldn't understand their persistence in recruiting her. The only explanation she could conceive related to Professor Thompson's initial experimental concept: blending medicinal properties with fragrances to administer medicine unknowingly.

Professor Thompson envisioned saving lives, but the organization twisted his intention, seeking to control and harm through poison.

"You're right," Mike admitted readily. "Frankly, I don't understand their core plan, but their development is stalled, just a tiny bit short of success, and they've been delayed for a long time. I suspect this is their final step. They've recruited other perfumers, but the materials never blended perfectly, perhaps due to differing professional backgrounds. You were the only one who succeeded! You achieved numerous milestones, making you even more valuable to them. Your safety is—for now—assured."

In other words, they wouldn't kill her yet.

Lily chuckled. "So, I should be grateful?"

Awkwardness flickered across Mike's face, masked by a cough. "I know it sounds hypocritical, but I'm not with them."

"You were forced, but why tell us this now? Are you no longer afraid? Or have you had a change of heart? Or… are you giving up on Nicky?"

"I'd never abandon Nick! I'd rot in hell before letting anything happen to him!" Mike retorted.

Lily remained silent. She understood parental love, fearing only danger to her child. Almost unconsciously, she stroked her belly, her gaze downcast.

Seeing her silence, Alexander leaned forward, arms crossed. "Are you here for my help?"

"I can't wait any longer!" Mike stood, pacing and breathing deeply, his decision seemingly requiring great courage. "They're pressuring me to get you on board. I know I can't convince you, but I don't know what else to do. So, I've decided to be honest. Let's cooperate!"

"Cooperate?" Alexander looked up.

"I have a plan…" Mike leaned toward Alexander, his gaze shifting to Lily. He paused, staring intently at her.

Lily turned to Mike, but before she could speak, Alexander's decisive rejection cut through the air: "No!"
