Chapter 20

Lily's indifference had always been a shield, making Nathaniel wonder when she'd noticed his use of company funds for Melanie's vacations and gifts. He couldn't understand her timing. Why now, after all this time? Two possibilities occurred to him: either she'd only recently discovered his actions, or she'd known all along and feigned ignorance. Either scenario terrified him. Their confrontation only reinforced his feeling of never truly knowing her, leaving him questioning if this was even the same Lily he knew.

Nathaniel clenched his fists. His anger was reaching a breaking point. He might have appeared calm before the board of directors, but the previous day had been pure panic. He'd feared he couldn't reassure the shareholders; it would have meant the end of his career.

Fortunately, he'd managed to convince them, and they seemed satisfied with his explanation—for now. However, things would become far more complicated if the shareholders learned the truth. He couldn't risk guessing whether Lily possessed any evidence. After careful consideration, he weighed the pros and cons and conceded. Lily wanted Olivia; very well. He would give her Olivia.

Olivia was nothing but a burden. Since Lily desired her so much, he'd generously relinquish her!

If Melanie successfully developed the new product and won the award, it would be a market sensation, generating massive profits. Would he still need to worry about Lily then? He dialed an extension, saying solemnly, "This is Nathaniel. Revoke Olivia's non-compete clause. Yes, that's all."

Melanie, after a few days' rest, returned to the laboratory, despite the unpleasant smell of chemicals. The allure of future fame and status propelled her onward. Although she'd essentially "authored" the formula, she needed to maintain appearances and participate in the research and development process. At the very least, she had to be seen. By overseeing the entire procedure, she could confidently answer any questions. She couldn't risk the consequences if someone like Lily appeared again.
