Listen to this chapter:

The spacious house was empty, dark. The doctor tossed his briefcase aside and slumped onto the sofa, burying his face in his hands. A sudden movement startled him. He looked around wildly. "Who's there?!"

"Doctor, don't be alarmed," a man's voice replied from the darkness. The lights flickered on. "Why didn't you turn on the lights when you arrived?"

"Iโ€ฆ" The doctor stood, his face alight with relief as he saw the figure. "I did as you asked. When will you release my family?"

"We didn't capture your family," the man corrected. "We helped rescue them."

The doctor nodded rapidly. "I know, I know! When can I see them?"

"Do you think now is the right time to bring them home?" Edward emerged from the shadows, his face now visible. "Do you think they can live peacefully? Will those who found you capture them again?"

The doctor fell silent, then, after a moment, buried his face in his hands and wept. A grown man, crouched on the floor, sobbing.

"I'm just an ordinary doctor. Why did you come for me? Who are you? Who are they?" His shoulders trembled. "I don't know anything! I don't know anything!"

"No, you're not an ordinary doctor. You're skilled in gynecology, neurology, and transplant surgery. You're remarkable. That's why they came looking for you." "Iโ€ฆ who are they?" The doctor looked up, speechless.

He was highly skilled, yes, but after adopting a new identity abroad, he'd hoped for a peaceful life, unknown. Yet, someone had found him, using his family as leverage.

He'd initially believed the task outrageous, but it had been merely examining a pregnant woman. He'd sighed in relief, imagining a swift reunion with his family.

But Lily had nearly strangled him on his first day, terrifying him. Then Edward had appeared, claiming his family was safe, hidden. He'd been skeptical at first, but the videos and his family's voices had reassured him.

The events had overwhelmed him. His family's plight, the constant uncertaintyโ€”it had all been too much.

He had no idea who his tormentor was, or even these people's identities. He'd been blindfolded constantly, only knowing they were foreign.

"Who they are? You don't need to know. It's only dangerous. It's best you know as little as possible," Edward said, studying the doctor.

He stepped forward, offering a hand. He understood the doctor's despair; he'd lived it himself.

"Let me ask you something. Have you completed the task I assigned?" He regarded the doctor thoughtfully.

Edward felt sympathy, but he had important work to do. It was for the doctor's own good, too. Only by dismantling the organization could Edward, the doctor, and everyone else return to normal lives.
