Edward yielded to Alexander's command, but never expected his boss to go alone instead of sending someone else. Alexander drove to the vaccine research center's back entrance, finding the place unchanged; workers still underwent inspection before entering or leaving. He anticipated this, as they retained ordinary jobs despite the cessation of the secret, nefarious experiments several days prior.

Several workers remained, but resembled headless chickens, adrift since losing contact with their superiors. No one knew what to do. Rhea or Mike usually assigned tasks, but both had vanished for two days. The workers had food and waterโ€”they lived on-siteโ€”but remained directionless. The organization had brought them there; they knew the project was illegal, based on the experiments and equipment, and feared the consequences of leaving.

Chaos reigned without leadership. They couldn't contact the organization, and all experiments had stopped. Alexander witnessed this disarray upon his nighttime entry. The usually bustling facility was eerily quiet; a few workers wandered listlessly, yawning or dozing. They could have slept in their rooms but feared being caught slacking.

All experimentsโ€”ongoing, planned, successful, or failedโ€”were abandoned. Only the door to the innermost room remained closed, inaccessible to the unauthorized workers outside. Alexander released sedative gas at the entrance, utilizing the ventilation system. The already drowsy workers quickly succumbed to sleep. He waited, covered his nose, and entered. The room was filled with laboratory equipment and containers of hazardous substances, the safe disposal of which he was unsure.

Though he doubted Rhea would keep Cameron in plain sight, Alexander searched, suspecting a hidden chamber or passage, but finding none.

'Edward is right; he's more familiar with this place, but I can't risk his life again.'

Reaching the innermost area, he found only various unknown liquids and solidsโ€”presumably finished productsโ€”in cabinets. He wondered if the organization intended to abandon both its creations and its workers.

'Has this place truly lost value? If so, why the massive investment in these experiments? Was it all Spades King's doing? Rhea acted independently, too.'

However, rescuing Cameron was paramount; such musings would have to wait.
