"She must have stopped crying because she's tired," Austin refused to admit Anastasia was superior. After all, he had tried tirelessly to calm the baby, and she hardly needed to do anything. "Yeah, right!" Anastasia scrunched her nose. Her mood improved seeing the baby peacefully nestled in her arms. The babies' smiles seemed to erase their recent troubles.
"Wow, she knows how to hold a baby better than you," Mike observed. "Why'd you mention giving the baby a shot? Don't you know children are terrified of shots?"
Austin mumbled, "I was just saying... the baby wouldn't understand, would she?"
"Don't underestimate them," Mike countered. "They know when we're saying nice or bad things. When Nicky was little, he'd look sad if I scolded him." He seemed lost in thought about his son.
Austin let him continue; he noticed Mike appeared less sad whenever he mentioned Nick. He thought it a healthy way for Mike to process his grief.
The nanny returned with two feeding bottles. "Here, let me handle them." She took the baby from Anastasia. "Ladies first, all right?"
"That's so sexist!" Austin exclaimed.
Anastasia chuckled. "She's the younger sister, right?" Her arms felt slightly sore from holding the baby. Mike, however, seemed untiring as he cradled the other. "You're so good at this," she said.
"Well, when my sonโ"
Anticipating another mention of his son, Austin interjected, "Don't encourage him, okay? He'll go on forever."
"Hey, he deserves my compliment," Anastasia retorted. "At least he's not clumsy like you."
Austin shook his head. "Come on, that's not what you said when I treated you."
"He treated you?" Mike asked, intrigued.
Anastasia nodded. "Yeah, I had a virus, and he helped me get rid of it. He kind of saved my life. Right, my savior?"
"Oh, I see," Mike said thoughtfully.
"You look better than before, too," Austin commented, appraising her. "You've recovered well."
Anastasia nodded. "I have. Would you like to retake my wrist pulse to see if the virus is still present?"
"Sure!" He checked her pulse. "You're doing well, but... try to eat less grilled meat."
Anastasia stuck her tongue out, but she was impressed. She had indeed lost a lot of weight and consumed a considerable amount of grilled meat, as Lily had suggested.
The nanny, feeding the baby, looked surprised. "Wow, you can tell by feeling her wrist, Mr. Austin?"
