Yasmin agreed with Lily. If Lily failed, the queen could always revert to the original plan. The R10 experiment had faced considerable resistance, even from Yasmin's own son. Public outcry would be overwhelming if the project were discovered. Most importantly, Yasmin's conscience troubled her.
Though she sounded resolute, hesitation lingered. Otherwise, she would have proceeded with the experiment days ago, instead of delaying it. This delay, however, had only increased her uncertainty. "What do you need?" Yasmin asked.
Since Lily had sought her out, the queen assumed the young woman had a request.
"I need your support, access to the lab and its chemicals," Lily said casually, "and I hope you'll release Dominic."
Yasmin chuckled. "He's the one refusing to leave."
Dominic wished to stay for Lily's sake, but she didn't want him to. "I can speak to him," Lily said, "but will you release him, Your Majesty?"
The queen fell silent. She was reluctant; she'd witnessed the doctor's exceptional skill. He'd diagnosed her condition solely by taking her pulse, without any instruments. He had also saved her life, making the queen eager to bring him back to Yudonia as her personal physician. Yet, knowing Dominic's nature from their time together, she feared forcing him to stay might drive him to suicide.
After considering this, Yasmin nodded. "I respect the old man's decision."
Lily nodded. "Then I'll bid him farewell before beginning the new experiment."
"Very well." As Lily left, Yasmin called out, "Lily! Despite everything, I consider you a friend and trust you. Please don't disappoint me. Do you understand?" Lily nodded. "I do."
Lily reflected, 'As the ruler of her country, Queen Yasmin is not one to trust easily, especially after Fred's betrayal. If I deceive her...'
Lily looked intently at the queen before departing. However, she had deceived Yasmin. The so-called new idea was entirely fabricated.
