Listen to this chapter:

An ambulance had already been called for Melanie, suspected of having a miscarriage. "They'll be here in about three minutes," the EMT said. Lily checked her watch, rolling her eyes. Luck was definitely not on her side. "Then?" she asked.

"It's a hoax," Lily snarled.

Olivia's expression was clear: she completely believed Lily. If Lily had wanted to harm Melanie, she would have done so long ago. This wasn't the right time or place for such a thing.

Melanie gasped at Lily's words. Raising her head, she gritted her teeth. "Lily, how dare you slander me! I wouldn't have fallen if it weren't for you! Nowah, it hurts! It hurts!" Her face contorted with pain. Sympathy usually falls to the weak.

Lily sneered. "Slander? Who's slandering who?"

The ambulance arrived swiftly, and paramedics carried Melanie inside. Lily didn't want to get involved, but she made a call. Staying would only fuel rumors and impact Olivia, so they both followed.

At the hospital, Melanie underwent a general examination and was quickly prepped for surgery. Outside the operating room, Olivia was shocked. "She's really pregnant? Why would she make such a fuss if she is? What was she trying to do?"

Lily wondered the same thing. Was it a setup? But if it was, and Melanie miscarried, what would Melanie gain? Reflecting on their conversation, Lily mused, "If I heard correctly, it seems she broke up with Nate."

That's what Melanie had said.

"Broke up? She's still pregnant, but broke up with Nate?" Olivia was stunned. "Those two were vile! How could they split up?" She shook her head. "You can't trust anyone these days!"

"I don't know," Lily said. "Maybe she's mentally unwell and talking nonsense?" Otherwise, why would Lily try to break them up? Lily was confused by the conflicting pieces of information.

"She's probably nuts!" Lily concluded, nodding.

A nurse approached. "Which of you are the patient's family? Please pay the hospital deposit."

They both shook their heads.

"Didn't you call the ambulance? Aren't you Melanie's family?" the nurse asked.

Lily replied slyly, "We're not her family. We just stopped to help. Calling an ambulance is one thing, but we're not paying the deposit." She had no intention of paying.

The nurse looked embarrassed.

Lily pondered. "Family, right?" she said, then added, "Please wait!"
