Chapter 314
Lily was surprised. She had few friends, but she’d met one in Woodland—a person of high caliber.
“Well, unexpected, but a blessing,” Alexander said, relieved. At least this relationship would ease Wesley Parker’s pressure on Lily.
“What kind of blessing? I’m in a terrible dilemma. Whether I compete or not, it won’t end well,” Lily murmured, gazing at the ceiling.
“Afraid?” Alexander asked, turning his chair to face the city’s boundless nighttime view. It was late, but he had no intention of going home. He preferred the office and his work to being alone.
“Afraid? I’ve faced worse. I can’t control what others say. I’ll do what I must!” Though complaining, Lily had decided. She couldn't change her situation and had never backed down from adversaries. Why withdraw from the competition because of gossip? She loved perfumery, not fame or approval. If she cared about public opinion, Nathaniel and Melanie’s slander would have devastated her. Her words made Alexander laugh. “Just do what you want. I’ve got your back.”
That support was exactly what Lily needed. Knowing she wasn't alone was a relief.
A knock startled her. It wasn't at her door, but Alexander's. "Sounds like someone's looking for you. Talk later," Lily said, hanging up before Alexander could respond. He frowned, then said, "Come in."
"Mr. Russell, it's Ms. Oakley," Edward said, looking uneasy.
The woman entered, ranting, "Hal! I knew you were here! Why did you stop me, Edward? What kind of secretary are you?"
Alexander sat up, waving a hand. Edward stopped and left.
Ms. Oakley wore Chanel’s latest slim-fit trench coat. She removed it to reveal a tight black dress that hugged her curves. She took a few steps, then, glancing at the door, said dissatisfiedly, “Edward’s losing his grip. He doesn’t even know how to close the door.”
Just as she reached for the door, Alexander said, “Leave it open.”
