Chapter 316
Brittany's crush on Alexander was no secret. Despite his repeated rejections, she never gave up hope, reasoning that his single status implied reciprocated feelings. She believed his sisterly treatment stemmed from their close families, masking a secret love. This conviction fueled her persistence; she was certain she would one day win his heart.
Seeing his gloomy expression, Brittany felt a pang of fear. She bit her lip, grabbing his sleeve.
"Fine," she said. "I haven't seen you in ages, and I miss you. Please don't be so harsh. I even bought you a late-night snack. It's bad enough you don't appreciate it, but you scolded me for it, too!"
She pouted, tears welling in her eyes, threatening to spill. Alexander sighed.
"You're not a child anymore. Don't be so stubborn. You've been gone for six months; your parents and brother must miss you. You should go home."
"They don't miss me. They only care about business. You're the same! All of you only care about business. Nobody cares about me!" Grabbing her lunchbox, she continued, "Fine, I'll go home, but you must eat first. After you eat, I'll leave." She offered the food with both hands.
Her expression made it clear he needed to eat, or face her displeasure.
"Brittany, don't be stubborn." He knew she meant well but didn't want to encourage her. Disappointment was the worst outcome, so he chose to preemptively manage her expectations.
He stood, taking his coat. "Edward"
"Mr. Russell?"
Edward, guarding the door, entered at his name. Alexander instructed, "Send Ms. Oakley home."
"You" Brittany was taken aback by his refusal of such a small request. Did he think the food was poisoned?
"Alexander, I hate you! Fine, don't eat it. I'll throw it in the trash to feed the dogs!"
She stormed out, leaving Edward momentarily stunned by her speed. He looked to Alexander for guidance. Alexander looked up.
"Go check on her and send her home." No matter how headstrong she was, she was family. If anything happened late at night, he'd be blamed.
"And you?" Edward hesitated.
"I'll take the other car," Alexander replied. "Send her home, then go rest."
"Okay," Edward said, pursuing Brittany.
The scent of food lingered. Alexander rubbed his stomach; he was hungry. He checked the time and thought of Lily in Westwood. It must be mealtime there, too. He'd have a simple snack, imagining he was eating with her, halfway across the world.
