Chapter 388
Lisa shook her head, a wry smile playing on her lips. "They weren't even married. How could they be divorced?"
"Ah," Lily exclaimed. Her first thought was how unconventional people abroad were. How could a couple have a child that age without being married?
"Actually, Nick was all part of Helen's plan," Lisa mumbled, sighing. She gazed out the window, lost in thought. She knew all this because she'd considered Helen a friend and even sympathized with her.
"Plan? Isn't Nick his child?"
"No, he is his child! Helen always liked Mike. She was madly in love with him and swore she'd marry him. But Mike was completely indifferent. She then conceived his child. She thought he'd marry her once he found out she was pregnant. She didn't expect him to not even want the child, but she refused an abortion and insisted on carrying the baby to term."
"Then, with the child, she went to beg Mike. He took Nick in, gave her money, but still refused to marry her. A few years later, Nick grew up, and Helen said she wanted to build a mother-son relationship with him while trying to get closer to Mike."
Lisa paused, gulping down half a glass of water. "I used to think it must be hard for her to love someone so deeply without reciprocation. That's why I wanted to help her. It would be good if they got together; children need a proper family. But I didn't expect her to be like this. After that day at the hospital, I understand why Mike refused her, even after all these years."
Lily remained silent, speechless. She'd come for dinner and ended up learning all this drama. However, this explained why Helen knew nothing about Nick's condition. Helen hadn't raised him and hadn't even considered him; she'd simply used him to trap a man who never loved her.
Lily thought, This is unbelievable! She's something else! The two women continued chatting. Their surroundings were quiet and deserted, though the restaurant wasn't in a remote area. It wasn't in the city center, but it was still downtown.
Lily looked at the sparse crowd below. "Isn't it dinner time yet? Or…is business bad here? Why is no one else here?"
Lisa laughed. "How could Mike take you to a place with bad business? The business here is excellent. It's just that…the entire place is booked out today!"
"Booked out?"
"Yes! It's his way of showing gratitude! You know how powerful he is now, right?"
"That's…a bit much!" Lily thought they were just having dinner. Did Mike have to book the whole place?
"It's nothing to Mike. It's just loose change!" Lisa added, after a pause. "What's more, you're his son's savior!"
"That's right."
Another voice answered.
