Chapter 55

"All right, you've passed the first challenge," Jenny concluded.

Lily, though somewhat expecting this, asked, "The first challenge?"

Jenny laughed. "You didn't expect this to be the only challenge, did you? If you want to join my team, you play by my rules. Joining our company is no simple task. Those who successfully entered," Jenny said pointedly, "had to undergo a series of challenging written tests and interviews. What makes you think you're special?"

Jenny's irritation stemmed from her own experience. As a recruit, she had studied hard and endured numerous interviews before being accepted into Rebirth, eventually rising to senior management. She was confident in her abilities and the company's meritocratic culture. She had witnessed no favoritism or unfair treatment, making Lily's seemingly effortless progress shocking and inexplicable. Regardless of Lily's connections, Jenny simply didn't want someone with questionable abilities on her team.

"I have never considered myself an exception, nor am I one. After all, you're here testing my abilities, aren't you?" Lily replied calmly, a polite smile on her face.

Her sincerity was evident; there was no anger or embarrassment. Lily's composure impressed those present.

"Yes, you're right. I was testing you, but this was only the first challenge. It doesn't mean you've earned my approval," Jenny said, determined not to be easily swayed. The first test had been fairly challenging, but not insurmountable. Initially, she'd considered Lily an opportunistic interloper lacking genuine skills. Witnessing Lily's ease, however, made Jenny realize she needed a more rigorous test.

"Ms. Gray, feel free to devise something more difficult. If I'm intimidated, consider me defeated," Lily stated fearlessly. Pausing, she stepped toward Jenny and smiled.

Jenny flinched, unnerved by the smile, despite its apparent lack of malice. "What do you want?" she asked.

"Nothing. I just wanted to ask: how many challenges have you prepared for me?" Lily responded.

Jenny sat up straighter, taking a deep breath. "Why? Are you afraid now? Weren't you the one promising to take on any challenge?"

"It's not that I'm afraid," Lily explained, "but since it's a wager, shouldn't we agree on the terms beforehand? I don't mind the challenges, as long as they're fair and sensible. However, I'd be annoyed by an endless series of tests after completing a few."

"What kind of person do you think I am? Countless challenges?" Jenny's eyes widened, her anger barely contained. "Lily Christian! I may not like you, but I've always been fair. Are you implying I'm deliberately making things difficult?"

Lily smiled serenely. "No, I don't think so. I believe you're a fair and sensible manager. So, how many challenges before you'll accept me onto your team?"

Jenny's fists clenched, but she maintained a composed exterior, though inwardly furious.
