Chapter 723
Ruby City held a twice-yearly charity auction featuring anonymously donated items, ranging from jewelry to antiques. There were no restrictions on the auctioned goods. The events attracted those seeking to enhance their reputations, as well as men hoping to impress their wives or mistresses. Elizabeth had long coveted a particular necklace: a teardrop-shaped sapphire pendant surrounded by diamonds, dazzling under the lights.
Years with Joseph had provided her with ample jewelry. However, seeing Eloise wearing a large pink diamond necklace at a previous event ignited Elizabeth's jealousy. Since then, she had persistently urged Joseph to buy her a more spectacular necklace. Although he agreed, he couldn't find a suitable piece and shelved the matter. This became a source of considerable frustration for Elizabeth. Failing to become "Mrs. Tanner," she sought compensation elsewhere, aiming to surpass Eloise in every other aspect.
Ultimately, she persuaded Joseph to attend the auction. Feigning distress, she lamented the years spent supporting him without attending such events, contrasting her situation with his wife's frequent appearances. Using her son as leverage, she finally convinced him. Joseph's wife was aware of the affair; it was common knowledge. Were it not for legal constraints, he would have brought Elizabeth home. The presence of another woman, he seemed to imply, was inconsequential.
Tonight, Elizabeth intended to acquire the necklace to spite Eloise. In a stunning new dress, she arrived at the auction on Joseph's arm, radiating triumph. Their arrival attracted attention. While her presence as Joseph's companion was unusual, it wasn't unprecedented in their social circle. Attendees politely complimented her, causing Joseph to feel both pleased and proud.
Eloise, a former top actress, had been undeniably beautiful. Joseph, Elizabeth reflected, wouldn't have married her otherwise. However, age was showing. Despite Eloise's efforts, time was unavoidable. Elizabeth, younger and more energetic, made Joseph feel rejuvenated.
Elizabeth greeted other wives, eager to become a part of their social group, anticipating her eventual status as "Mrs. Tanner." However, they largely ignored her or offered polite smiles before resuming their conversations. They were realistic; a mistress remained a mistress and had no place among them. Their reputations would be tarnished by associating with her.
Frustrated by her lack of acceptance, Elizabeth became even more determined to win the sapphire necklace. "Get off your high horses!" she thought. "The Tanner Corporation will belong to my son, and you'll all be vying for my attention. Don't even think about currying favor with me then!" Grabbing a glass of wine, she leaned against Joseph.
"Honey, don't forget your promise. You need to get the sapphire necklaceโ"
"All right, don't worry!" Joseph reassured her, patting her back. "It's just a necklace. I won't forget. I promise you'll be bringing it home tonight!"
Elizabeth beamed, peacefully awaiting her prize.
