Chapter 746
Upon hearing him say, "Take things slowly," Lily reflexively exclaimed, "No! I can't take things slowly."
Alexander, stunned by her overreaction, grew suspicious. "What's the matter?"
"N-Nothing," Lily stammered, shaking her head. She dared not tell him about her pregnancy, as she hadn't decided what to do. "Maybe I'm just feeling lost after resigning. I thought there was nothing to miss about the job, but my time at Rebirth was the happiest I've ever been since I started working."
She meant it. All her colleagues at Rebirth had treated her well. Even though Jenny had initially made things difficult, the two became good friends after Lily proved herself. The truth was, after leaving Nathaniel, she'd discovered a whole new world and realized she should have left him much sooner.
"That's it?" Alexander questioned, still somewhat suspicious of her unusual reaction.
"That's it," she insisted, wrapping her arms around his neck and emphasizing each word. "Also, it all happened because of you. Every time I look back, I'm grateful that I sought your help in my toughest moments, and grateful that you were always willing to give it. Although I have no idea why you helped me then, you're my savior!"
Lily gazed sincerely at her husband, finally saying what she'd always thought, though she never expected to say it aloud under these circumstances.
"You have no idea why I helped you?" Alexander asked, holding her face in one hand and caressing her hair with the other.
"It's because I've always liked you," he said.
"Bullshit!" Lily snorted disbelievingly. 'A long time ago? We didn't even know each other back then. He might have only seen me once at the Best Newcomer Competition. It couldn't be love at first sight, could it?'
"It's the truth. You don't believe me?" Alexander gently squeezed her face, emphasizing he wasn't joking.
Lily blinked. "When was it? Don't tell me it was when I first joined the Best Newcomer Competitionโlove at first sight? I'll tease you mercilessly if it was." She hadn't known much then, as it was her first competition. Even though she won, she'd made a fool of herself later on. As CEO of La Beautรฉ Group, Alexander must have seen countless outstanding people; it was unlikely she'd caught his eye.
"It wasn't then," Alexander shook his head. "It was earlier."
"Earlier?" Lily was surprised; she had no recollection of meeting him before. "When? I don't remember. All I remember is that I first met you at the"
"At the Russel family's house," Alexander paused. "More specifically, my family's old house."
"Y-Your family's old house? I wonder when I was there," Lily said, even more surprised, feeling as if part of her memory was missing.
"You were probably too young to remember. Still, what matters is that I remember you," Alexander pressed his forehead against hers, unconcerned about her lack of recollection. It was enough that he hadn't lost her, that they were still together.
"No, I was nine and with the Lodge family. It's unlikely I wouldn't remember. Could it be even earlier?" Lily insisted, needing a clear answer.
