Chapter 996

Although not the patriarch, as the youngest Russell son, he was Margaret's favorite. He lacked his siblings' sharpness, easily swayed. He likely knew the family's secrets as well.

In the bathroom, Ralph pondered her motivations. His thoughts revolved around her challenging nature; she was the most difficult woman he'd ever encountered. After splashing cold water on his face, he saw his swollen lips in the mirrorโ€”two distinct teeth marks explained the swelling. He rubbed his lips, resolving to be less passive. Turning off the faucet, he strode out and found Heather by the door.

Heather turned at the sound of his approach, only to find him already before her. He placed a hand on hers, pinning her against the doorframe.

"What is he trying toโ€”" Bang! She narrowed her eyes. Her initial impulse was to kick him, but pausing, she sneered. "What's wrong? Didn't you suffer enough? Are you back for more?"

"What are you trying to do?" Ralph asked abruptly.

Startled, but maintaining composure, Heather replied calmly, "Shouldn't I ask you that, Mr. Russell?" She stood still, though her knees were slightly bent, prepared to retaliate against any unpleasantness.

"Let's break off the engagement," he said after a moment's reflection. His face was serious, devoid of humor. Despite pinning her, his words carried a quiet dignity. Even Heather, experienced as she was, froze, stunned.

"What?"

"I said, let's break off the engagement," he repeated, enunciating clearly, emphasizing his seriousness.

Anger flared in Heather's heart. "Are you serious right now?!" She was accustomed to being in control; rejection was unprecedented. Ralph Russell, who do you think you are? You're just another powerless Russell son. If I didn't need you as a pawn, would you even have a chance with me? Yet, you dare call off our engagement?!

Though she'd planned to use him, she craved dominance, the power to decide. "Is this because I bit you?" She glanced at the teeth marks, oddly recalling the strange sensation of their kissโ€”his hot lips, a feeling unlike any other.

"No, I'm doing this because of you," Ralph said, meeting her gaze. Perhaps her surprise stemmed from his unexpected seriousness, a departure from his usual accommodating behavior.

"For me?" She repeated, confused. Unconsciously, she straightened, her puzzlement evident.
