Chapter 125

Yvonne had been waiting for her family to praise her, but Sallyโ€™s reaction was so intense that it stunned her. For a second, she just froze, then darted behind Jared for cover.

Jared frowned, studying Yvonneโ€™s boyish short hair, then shot me a reproachful look. โ€œVictoria, why did you cut Yvonneโ€™s hair so short?โ€

Next to me, Quinn rolled her eyes and silently mouthed, โ€œYouโ€™re nuts.โ€

I knew that every time Yvonne made a mistake, it always came back to me getting scolded. Iโ€™d gotten used to it.

โ€œYvonne was the one who wanted to get her hair cut,โ€ I said.

Yvonne nervously clutched Jaredโ€™s shirt and whispered, โ€œYeah, I wanted to. Does it look bad?โ€

This time, I wasnโ€™t going to take all the blame for Yvonneโ€™s choices. Since she was the one involved, I made sure she spoke up for herself.

โ€œMy darling, why did you chop off your beautiful waist-length hair like this? It looks like a dog chewed on it,โ€ Sally finally stopped blaming me and turned her attention to Yvonne.

Jared squatted down and asked Yvonne seriously, โ€œWhy did you cut your hair? Youโ€™re a girl. Long hair is what makes girls look pretty.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to be pretty. Momโ€™s pretty, but it doesnโ€™t do her any good,โ€ Yvonne said, using me as her example.

With her hands on her hips and in her best grown-up voice, she added, โ€œI want to be a fighter like a boy.โ€

Jared and Sally exchanged a glance and couldnโ€™t help but laugh. They gave Yvonneโ€™s cheeks a playful pinch, and just like that, the whole hair-cutting drama blew over.

Jared looked up at me, probably remembering how theyโ€™d just finished scolding me. He said, โ€œSince it was Yvonneโ€™s idea, you still shouldโ€™ve talked to me before cutting her hair.โ€

Honestly, his so-called comfort after the fact didnโ€™t mean squat to me. I just replied coolly, โ€œSheโ€™s growing up. She can make her own choices now. Iโ€™m just respecting what she wants.โ€

Sally clearly wasnโ€™t buying it. โ€œGrowing up? Sheโ€™s not even eighteen yet. She still needs to be kept in line. Just look at her, all tomboyish. She doesnโ€™t look like a girl at all.โ€

โ€œGrandma, Iโ€™ve decided to be a boy for a while,โ€ Yvonne said, all rebellious.

Sally couldnโ€™t help but laugh at that and let it go.

Jared looked me over and said, โ€œIโ€™m flying to Showtown this afternoon. Want to come with me?โ€

My eyes flickered. โ€œWhat for?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve got some business to handle over there. Figured you might be bored staying here, so why not come along for a change of scenery?โ€ Jared said, actually sounding thoughtful for once.

'Since when did he start caring about how I feel?' I wondered.

โ€œSure, Iโ€™ll go,โ€ I replied, no way I was letting a chance like this slip by.

Sally wasnโ€™t having it. โ€œJared, youโ€™re going for business. Is it really appropriate to bring Victoria along? She doesnโ€™t know the first thing about it.โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t know now, but she can always learn,โ€ Jared replied, shooting me a look that seemed to mean more than he was saying.

I narrowed my eyes. 'Did our fight last night actually get through to him?' I thought.

โ€œWhat does a housewife need to learn all that for?โ€ Sally said, a bit displeased.

Quinn, sprawled out nearby, drawled, โ€œJared, are you feeling sorry for Victoria or something? Leaving Yvonne with us on purpose so you can take her out and have some fun together?โ€

Jared shot me a glance, then looked away and said in a flat voice, โ€œShe hasnโ€™t left Hachester in ages. A little change of scenery will do her good.โ€

โ€œDad, I want to go too.โ€ Yvonne immediately started whining, โ€œTake me with you.โ€
