Chapter 139

Nathan was definitely more nervous than I was. His handsome face remained flushed, as if the room were too warm, his gaze occasionally drifting toward me with an almost dazed intensity.

I took a sip of tea, the porcelain warm against my fingers. โ€œIโ€™ve been thinking about investments lately. Any advice?โ€

He blinked, surprised. โ€œAre you short on cash?โ€

The question caught me off guard, a small, unexpected flicker of warmth in my chest. But just as quickly, my rationality reasserted itself. โ€œNo. I just want to learn how to make money work for me.โ€

Nathan nodded. โ€œThatโ€™s smart. Always good to have an exit strategy.โ€

The words cut deeper than he probably intended. So even outsiders were counting down the days until my marriage collapsed. And why wouldnโ€™t they? Without a backup plan, what else was left?

Jared had been erratic lately, hot and cold, impossible to read. But I knew exactly who he was, in this life and the last. To him, everyone was a calculated decision. Tracy. Me. Maybe Yvonne was the only one he truly kept close.

โ€œIf you want my opinion,โ€ Nathan continued, โ€œI can give you some pointers. Has Mr. Holcomb fully handed over Harmonia Hotel to you yet?โ€

โ€œMm. Both properties are underperforming. If I didnโ€™t step in, Jared wouldโ€™ve shut them down by now. He doesnโ€™t keep dead weight.โ€ Jared had always been ruthless that way, cutting losses before they bled him dry.

โ€œWhy take this on? Did you study hospitality management?โ€

โ€œI did. But my degreeโ€™s been gathering dust for six years. At this point, Iโ€™m basically a rookie.โ€

โ€œRookie?โ€ Nathanโ€™s eyes crinkled with amusement. โ€œSounds like someone who needs looking after.โ€

โ€œLooking after? Iโ€™m not โ€˜helpless.โ€™ Just inexperienced,โ€ I corrected.

He leaned in, suddenly serious. โ€œI prefer my version. Either way, I know some people in the industry. Iโ€™ll introduce you.โ€

โ€œThanks. Iโ€™d appreciate that.โ€ Connections were everything. The best in any field operated like an exclusive club, impenetrable without the right key. And Nathan, it seemed, had the right keys.

โ€œDonโ€™t mention it. Now, about investing, have you considered stocks?โ€

โ€œI have. But Iโ€™d need guidance.โ€

Nathanโ€™s gaze softened as he looked at me. โ€œIf you trust me, I can connect you with the best in the business.โ€

For a moment, I just looked at him. His eyes were clear, unguarded, and in them, I saw only my own reflection.

โ€œSorry, was that too forward?โ€ He ducked his head with an almost boyish grin when I didnโ€™t respond immediately. โ€œWe barely know each other, and moneyโ€™s a sensitive topic. Maybe I should just recommend some courses instead. Hands-on learning might be better.โ€

โ€œActually, that sounds perfect,โ€ I said. If I were stepping out of my comfort zone, I wasnโ€™t going to half-ass it. โ€œDo you know any good ones?โ€

โ€œPlenty. I attend finance seminars all the time.โ€ He pulled out his phone. โ€œIโ€™ll send you a list of the best resources.โ€

โ€œThanks.โ€ I accepted his offer, though the conversation lulled afterward. I wasnโ€™t a finance expert, and the silence stretched awkwardly.
