Chapter 157
The photos from Clyde made me feel sick. I sensed Jared was hiding more than I imagined. He might have more than one mistress.
I shut my eyes, trying to calm down. Having come this far, there was no turning back. I had to figure out how to get what I wanted.
In my previous life, I feared trouble and avoided thinking too much, so I drifted along. Now, my situation was different, and I must learn to plan for myself.
Right after I sat down, Sally called. I stared at the screen, frowning as I hesitated over whether to answer.
Sally doted on Quinn. Since Quinn got hit by Jared because of me yesterday, I worried Sally would blame me for everything.
In the end, I answered. To my surprise, Sally didnโt yell right away; she just asked if I suspected Jared of cheating. She also mentioned the mistressโs name was Tracy, the companyโs vice president.
Hearing that, I knew Sally had probably pressured Quinn until she spilled everything.
Sally said, โVictoria, I knew something had to be going on for you to act like that. I get it. Iโve seen through men long ago. For example, if I hadnโt brought out the evidence, James would never have admitted to cheating."
โBut honestly, itโs hard for me to believe Jared would do that.โ Sally talked a lot but ended up saying she didnโt think her son would cheat.
I was speechless. She was just calling to get me to accept the truth.
โYouโve been a wife, too. Surely you can understand how I feel,โ I said calmly.
โOf course, butโฆโ Sallyโs tone shifted. โYou need proof. Without evidence, blindly suspecting him isnโt fair to Jared.โ
โWhat kind of proof? Do I have to wait until they have a child?โ I gave a bitter laugh. โA womanโs intuition never lies. I know you want me to swallow my pride, but sorry, I canโt.โ
Sally said, โVictoria, thatโs harsh. I just want to say that I know Jared well. He was a top student, smart and driven. You know he puts all his focus into work. Without him, the Holcomb family wouldnโt be where we are now.
โSometimes men need to play along with social games. You should try to understand him.โ Sally started giving me that lecture again, as if disagreeing with her meant I was just being difficult.
I knew most people agreed with her, but I couldnโt accept it. I didnโt want to sacrifice myself.
โDo you want me to just put up with it?โ I asked, my voice flat.
Sally said, โI just want you to have a proper talk with Jared. If heโs showing signs of cheating, you can stop him in time. Marriage is never smooth sailing. Every couple has conflicts."
โWomen are very forgiving. Victoria, weโve known each other for six years. Though weโve had our issues, weโve always understood each other. I believe communication can fix almost anything.โ
Sally didnโt come right out and say it, but I knew she wanted me to just take it. However, remembering how my constant patience backfired in my previous life made my blood boil.
